I spend a lot of time complaining about my job… possibly more time than I actually spend doing it, if the truth be told… but, once in a while, it has its satisfactions.
The ongoing project, which has dominated my life for nearly three years, weighing down my days and forcing even my nightmares into VB6 colour coding, has just won another industry award. Last year, it was a Microsoft Digital Britain award; this year, a New Media Age Effectiveness award. The plaque thing’s just been delivered, it’s sitting on my crazed Australian boss’s desk. (He takes these things very seriously, and has taken today off work so that he can wet himself in private).
It looks nice there. It will look nice on my CV, as I continue my quest to persuade a recruiter to rescue me from this hell-hole. It’s got the client’s name on it, and also our company’s name, which is an improvement on last year. It doesn’t come with a prize, or a raise, or anything like that. But it does, in some small way, mean a bit of recognition for a hell of a lot of work, and, though I’m not wetting myself, I will confess to feeling just slightly pleased with it.
