You can read a little about how this came to be at Dan Perkins’s (aka Tom Tomorrow’s) blog at This Modern World. Apparently, O’Reilly agreed that they would alternate asking each other questions, the segment would not be edited, and he would lead in by explaining that Moore had been avoiding his show only because O’Reilly walked out of his movie.
Should be priceless. Shame I don’t have cable–I’m sure I can catch the highlights later.
It’s hard to tell from the official site, Zoo. They give a whole slew of people from 7:00 to 9:00, after which the big names start, the first of which is Howard Dean. So, I don’t think you’ll miss much. 99 posts since August '99, huh? My, but you’re a chatty one.
Here’s today’s schedule from the official DNC Convention site.
It doesn’t sound like there’s any significant speakers going on until after 10:00 EDT. Ted Kennedy’s going to be on sometime early in the night but the headliners tonight are going to be Barack Obama and Theresa Heinz-Kerry. I think Theresa might give a pretty good speech. She’s a feisty woman.
I see that Ron Reagan is supposed to make an appearance as well. That might be worth looking out for.
Simul! I agree that Ron would be worth seeing. He’s almost as good a speaker as his dad. I’ve heard him read his dad’s letters, and he brings them alive.
Had the strangest thought flit across the brainpan. What if O’Reilly is looking to back away from positions he’s identified with? Might the man actually possess some intellectual integrity? After all, Bill Buckely has been observed gingerly dipping his toe into the water, and in our own little incestuous universe, any number of Dopers have altered their positions.
If that were the case, I’d expect him to pound a couple of points emphaticly, but adopt a “Well, you may be right about that, can’t actually prove otherwise…” sort of stance. You know, the one most commonly associated with sane folks.
So its a date then, yes? Everybody here after the show.
By two bit bet: MM stays cool and collected, facts at his fingertips, Bull O’Really loses it about twenty minutes in. Late enough in the show so he can cast out the infidel publicly, and not have too much dead air to fill.
Yeah, he’s a sharp and likable guy. He also manages to be center to left politically while maintaining a lot of pride and respect for his dad. I think he’ll be more interesting to listen to than Teddy.
Dean could be intriguing if he goes postal on Bush, but I have no doubt they’re vetting the crap out him before they let him go on.
that was a little disappointing. I give the edge to Moore but it wasn’t a knockout.
So, according to BO, Bush didn’t lie, he just said something that wasn’t true and it was a mistake, and he wouldn’t send his own kid to die for Fallujah.
It was really a kindergarten cheap shot for O’Reilly to accuse Moore of being Saddam’s “biggest defender,” and it was incredibly lame for BO to keep trying to pretend that the Iraq war had anything to do with terrorism.
Moore didn’t hammer him as hard as he could have, though. Of course, O’Reilly is a psycho so maybe MM was a little bit nervous about pushing his buttons.
Thank you Liberal and Diogenes for your thoughtful replies. As for my posting frequency, I have very few thoughts\opinions that are not expressed more articulately by other dopers.
As well he should have. What kind of twisted, heartless monster would think that parents should make that sort of decision for their kids? Aren’t 18-year olds capable of thinking for themselves?
George W. Bush made that decision for other people’s kids. It was a fair question. When people join the military they are entrusting the CIC not to put them in harm’s way unless it’s absolutely necessary. It’s fair to ask BO as a Bush water boy if he would think that Fallujah was worth sacrificing his own kid for. Since BO thinks it was worth sacrificing other people’s kids for, there’s nothing unreasonable about asking him that.
Another thing: let’s not forget the thousands of civilians which have been killed in Iraq. Many, many, many of them have been absolute innocents with no power of “choice” at all. Bill O’Reill and GWB are happy to bomb other people’s babies so it’s fair to ask if they would bomb their own babies.
Overexuberance? Overconfidence? Paying too much attention to the past seven or eight years of world leaders saying, “Yeah, Iraq’s got WMD’s?”
Further, why do you focus on that point rather than the ACTUAL substance of the quote? Y’know, the “not outright deception” part? The whole “not outright deception” part that the 9/11 commission agrees with?
