I have a cat. Maxwell. He is 2 years old. Three months ago he learned the joys of being outside at night. He decided he loved this. He would go out with the dogs in the backyard for last pee at night, then he would roam the neighborhood (he’s neutered) until the dogs went out for first pee in the morning, then he was always by the door ready to come in and spend the rest of the day indoors. I’ve never let my animals roam about a neighborhood before knowing they could get hurt. But the damn cat loved it so much, he would wait by the door at night for last pee call.
This morning at 5:30 my GF wakes me up in hysterics. When she let the dogs in Max dragged himself in obviously in pain and obviously not well. My Bischon pup jumped on him for their morning wrestle (they will spend hours wrestling and playing on the floor) and he drug himself under the livingroom chair. I lift the chair to look at him and immediatly think, “he’s been hit by a car.” My GF is in hysterics and panicing saying, “what do we do?!?!” Keep in mind this woman is an Emergency Room Nurse but when it comes to her animals or family she just falls apart. I told her to go grab the phone book and find an animal emergency center while I got dressed. We found a night-time emergency clinic and took him there.
She was filling out paper work and the nurse took him back to the vet and suddenly my cat started screaming during the examination. My GF is in hysterics again… we beg the nurse to let us go back there so finally she lets us.
The minor injuries for this morning: Skinned chin, broken canine (feline?) tooth, Shreaded claws (the vet said when they get hit the claws grip the pavement and then they get dragged)
This mornings major injuries: Seperated tail( the x-ray shows almost a 2 inch gap where the tail bones should meet the pelvis, like it had been pulled free of the other bones, all the nerves and blood supply are seperated, it will have to be amputated when he is well enough), blood in his urine and Shock.
The good news was that his lungs were clear, no blood. His abdomine didn’t appear to have blood in it (they asperated to make sure). At the time the vet said that he thought Max would probably be fine in time and that he doesn’t usually see cats that look that good after being hit.
That was this morning.
This evening my Maxie is STILL in shock… there is more blood in his urine… and new x-rays show his kidneys are 20% more swelled then they were this morning. He had to be taken back to the night-time emergency clinic so that he could be watched through the night, then brought back to the vets when the clinic closes in the morning.
If the kidney swelling doesn’t get better they will shut down.
…and my cat will die…
…oh dear God I don’t want my cat to die…
