Can anyone tell me anything about this here Bobby Convey item? He’s just joined my team - Tottenham Hotspur - for a million dollars.
Where does he play? What sort of player is he?
What we are crying out for is a hard tackling defensive midfielder. Also some one to play on the left (which I believe is the position he has been picked for)
Could he be the first Yankee outfield player to make it in England? (The goalies are good, but the outfield players have been pretty rubbish so far).
He’s very young, maybe 19 or 20 years old. One of the 2-3 best young prospects on the USA national team. He is a striker or attacking midfielder. He is also fairly fast. I know that he plays MLS right now, which is sort of a requirement until US players are at least 18 (this is sometimes called the Landon Donovan rule). I’ll look up some better information. I’ve recently seen him score a very nice goal in the Gold Cup (CONCACAF competition).
Here’s his bio at the MLS site. Apparently he plays for DC United (the Washington DC based club), is just 20 years old now, and is a midfielder. The goal I mentioned above (against Cuba in the Gold Cup) was his first international goal. So far I’ve seen them mainly bring him on in relief in those games, although he has had some starts. Sounds like Tottenham like his potential. And if he has talent it will certainly develop better on your side of the pond than ours.
We played DC United a couple of times in exhibitions (Jurgen Klinsmann was playing for them and is an ex-yid). He must have impressed (I was at the London one and don’t really remember him, but it was a testimonial with lots of old players coming on etc, not a proper game).
Let’s see what happens. £750,000 isn’t a fortune even in this depressed market. And he may sell some shirts in the USA
Sounds like it’s not a bad investment with a potentially good upside and relatively low risk. I’ll be interested in your evaluation later. How much will he actually make, if his transfer is 750K?
Transfers vary, but i would guess his signing on fee will be 10% of the fee (ie £75,000), He will have to divide this with his agent and I would imagine (a reasonably educated guess this) that his basic wage wil be quite low - ie about £2,000 a week, and this will be heavily incentivised with bonuses for making the first team, and the contract will be reviewed at the end of the year,
Realistically he could make about £8-10,000 a week in his first year, and considerably more than that if he makes the grade.
I know that DC United fans rate him highly (I’m still on their mailing list, even though I haven’t lived in the States for years). They’re sorry to see him go.
