Oil Jobs in Alberta

Question, I have a GED level education, am an American. I’ve heard there’s decent paying jobs mining oil in Alberta Canada. What are my prospects for getting one if I got there?

They’re crying for people. However, you’d need to have a work Visa to work in Canada; you can’t just walk in and get a job without a social security number.

There are also jobs available in Alaska, Wyoming, and Montana (best wages probably in Alaska). But being a roughneck is a dirty, hard, and dangerous job. That’s why the pay is pretty good – you’ll earn it.

Personally, if I was okay with a dirty and hard job for relatively good money, I’d be looking at fishing boats in Alaska. This isn’t the best time of year for that, of course.

Nitpick, and I know what you meant, Ginger, but our friend of the OP should know that in Canada, it’s known as a Social Insurance Number. He may well have a social security number, but he cannot use it in Canada. Just didn’t want him to be confused.

There are lots of jobs but very few places to live. If you plan on going there, get accomodations first.

Offshore gulf of Mexico is also very busy and looking for drill crews - check out teh big drilling contractors
Transocean, Pride, Nabors (ok well the are mostly Land rigs)

Look over at http://www.rigzone.com/ at their jobs section.
Other than working for a drilling contractor which will have a regular rotation you may also consider the service side things. Baker Hughes, Baker Oil Tools, Schlumberger, Pathfinder, Precision Drilling, Weatherford, Halliburton, Cameron, plus a slew of mom and pop companies you may see advertised.

Service companies typically pay better, but the work schedules are far from regular as the companies services are typically only required for small portions of the well and it is generally unpredictable when and how long those services will be needed for. Mudlogging or data logging is probably the most regular rotation and a service hand, wireline operator the least.

I think this might be a little overplayed by the media at this point. I haven’t had any trouble renting a room all year last year, and a cursory look on rentfaster.ca reveals an abundance of rental opportunities for reasonable (compared to property prices) prices. For a single room in a house (and if you’re on your own, why would you need anything more?) $400 to $500/month is easily attainable and quite cheap compared to average wages. I currently pay $430/month with all utilities, internet, and garage for my car and storage, in a very nice suburban neighbourhood. Do your research and you shouldn’t have any problems.

There’s a lot of gas well drilling going on in Western Colorado right now. Some places are hiring if you have the abiltiy to walk upright and pass a drug test.
