OJ and LSD

I’ve heard this from several people. If you have orange juice while tripping, it makes you trip harder (supposedly because of the vitamin C). I’ve also heard that if someone’s having a bad trip, and you give them OJ, it’ll make them come down. I’ve also heard this about hallucinogenic mushrooms.

Both claims sound extremely unlikely, not to mention that they seem to contradict eachother, but I can’t convince my misguided friends of this.

Anybody out there know for sure? Does orange juice affect hallucinogens? Or is this just another urban legend?

I remember reading something like this on snopes - try a search there.

And let me be the first to say I was expecting startling new information on the Simpson murders when I read the title.

When someone posted recently asking about making cheap LSD out of oranges and juicy fruit, I did a little searching. The majority of my findings said that orange juice (actually megadoses of vitamin C – I don’t know how much oranges themselves would help) softened the trip and made it shorter and more pleasant. Having only done it a few times and never with orange juice in my system, I couldn’t tell you. My old college roommate used to take vitamin C tablets before doing acid, but wouldn’t share, the cheap bastard (oddly, she shared the drugs, but not the vitamin C). I don’t remember the site I found this info on, but I remember there being a lot out there about it, so try a search for +LSD +“vitamin C”

Erm, my roommate was a he, not a she. Pity though.

OJ is fluid, and one thing tripping people often forget to do is hydrate. It also smells and tastes pretty good and so is easy to ingest at a time when all sensory input is greatly intensified.
In addition to that, a solid glass of OJ provides an island of focus for the hapless tripper, a safe and understandable thing to concentrate on when the brain is processing at 1000 miles an hour.
Apple juice is good too. Don’t know about the Vitamin C. specifically; I would have thought that that would take too long to absorb to have such an immediate effect on a so-called bad trip.

No, no, no. You are supposed to TAKE the LSD IN the orange juice.

The jingle-jangle that most blotter acid causes is softened by the memory that you’ve had a nice big glass of Healthy Mister Orange Juice. (Never underestimate the importance of little things like this when you’re loaded to the mental and emotional gunwales with psychedelics.) And if you’re tripping too hard, it’s the B-complex vitamins that’re supposed to calm you down, not C.

Um, my friend told me all this.

The version of this story I heard was simply that tripping can deplete some of your vitamin C, so it’s just a good idea to take some replacement. Don’t know if there’s any truth to that or not.

OJ? No, no, no - what you want is some ice cream, preferably a milkshake. The cold is a slight shock to the system, the straw is fun to play with, and it tastes really good. It also helps to remember you’re an organic part of an organic planet.

Um…did I mention I know Uke’s friend?

Never heard the orange juice and LSD trick, but when I was in high school in the 80’s ecstasy was popular, and most people were pretty sure OJ helped soften and/or sustain your X buzz(it seemed to be one of those things perpetually passed on from the experienced user to the uninitiated). In clubs X seemed to be everywhere, and everyone always had a cigarette in one and and a glass of OJ in another.

wow, just goes how much to show you the amazing diversity of urban legend. i had been thinking about posting this earlier today, but forgot. my friends gather as much vitamin c-containing bevereges either pre- or during-trips. they insist that vitamin c gives you better hallucinations. i usually go along with them because i get free Soba or like GatoradeMAX!!! just for not dashing their illusions.

however, that bit me in the butt a little while back. i was eating e, as were the aformentioned friends, and for some reason i kept downing these vitamin c tablets yet another friend had. some were 500mg, others way up there. i must have eaten like fifteen of these bastards in a few hours. i’m talking like Paulingesque doses here.

at one point, i stood up, ran to the bathroom, and projectile vomited all over the vitamin kid’s sink. i will never take part (consciously or by default) with these waxky vitamin c schemes again.

Awww, I thought this was gonna be about the dude who tripped out so much he still thinks he’s a glass of orange juice.

friedo- That’s okay; I thought this thread was going to be explaining away O.J. Simpson’s murders because he was really spaced out on LSD at the time.

Shows what I know.

The way we always used it was different again from the two mentioned. For us it was always nice during the immediate come down - for that healthy and comforting feeling.

And, apart from aseymayo’s ice cream suggestion - has anyone really found a way (that works) to bring someone down?

Yeah, and I’m a friend of their friends too. All of them.

Charley.

The friends told me that a big glass of milk will kill a mushroom trip, however I – uh they tried it once in the midst of a full-on flipout, and noticed no effect. As for the OJ, the vitamin C supposedly enhances the visual aspect of the trip. Can’t be sure about that, but I have seen excessive oj consumption induced vomiting on two occasions. One sure-fire way to bring someone down is to feed them benzodiazapines. Doesn’t really kill the trip, but it will calm the mind enough to stopa freak out.

jason, help me out here. I already get crap about the drug threads. This one asked a question, which is being answered.

Do you really have to complicate my life by suggesting the illicit use of a habit-forming prescription sedative as a companion to a non-habit forming illegal depressant?

I’d really like to allow questions such as that in the OP to continue, but I can’t if respondants can’t restrain themselves from complicating matters.

Wanted to give Charley an answer to his question. I will now hop back over the line and not cross it again. :o

Thanks. I appreciate the assist.

The folklore I had heard was: the way to come down in a hurry from a bad acid trip was to take lots of niacin. The theory being that it flushes your head with extra blood and flushes the LSD right out of your skull.

When I think about it, I doubt it could work because it’s just the same bloodstream with the LSD dissolved in it recirculating anyhow.

I’ve heard the folklore too and can’t say for sure whether of not there is any truth to it. I’ve heard among others that vitamin C makes you have a calmer trip say if you take a MEGADOSE of it a few hours bofore hand. Probably psychological–i.e. placebo. I dunno–can’t seem to find anything to prove/disprove it.

Niacinamide, however will help somewhat. Niacinamide wont cause the flushing effect (like Niacin)–which would most likely make your trip worse. Megadoses of Niacinamide (about 2 grams) have a calming effect (similar to Valium)…which is probably due to it’s effect on increasing GABA in the brain.
