You misunderstand, mhendo. It isn’t that I don’t think these issues should have been addressed, it was the throw-the-baby-out-with-the-bathwater way they were addressed that I’m contemptuous of. I’m sure you feel it was necessary to acheive the changes that took place. I think a more mature, pragmatic approach would have been better. It has nothing to do with hating poor people, women or Communists.
And on preview, nor does it have anything to do with hating faggots, darkies and weirdos (though it does appear that the latter seems to have found a home at last here on the Straight Dope).

In fact, i think that are plenty of problems and inequities that still need addressing, and that neither major party has shown much interest in dealing with them in any substantial manner. Plenty of lip service, not much action.
But Starving Artist was the one who first used the term idyllic, and even if we’re simply being comparative rather than absolute, i don’t think the '50s and early '60s qualifies.

I don’t understand this at all. All of the stuff I hear about Paiin’s personal life is from the McCain Campaign or from speeches in the Republican Convention. (I first heard about her daughter’s pregnancy via an official release from the McCain Campaign!) Last I checked, that was the right-wing. Every time I hear some conservative pundit saying that her family should be left out of it, I feel like I’m living through 1984.
