Ok, I agree...Bush is a frigging moron (Bush Signs Schiavo Bill)

Bush is selective on what lives and rights are important.

White woman in vegatative state- important
People unable to pay for hospital bills in Texas- unimportant

Iraqis living under despotic regime- important
North Koreans living under despotic regime- unimportant

Interests of Saudi royal family- important
Saudis living with limited rights- unimportant

Iraqis tortured by Hussein’s government- important
Iraqis tortured by Bush’s govenment- unimportant

Murders of Kurds by Hussein- important
Genocide in Rwanda- unimportant
Genocide in Sudan- unimportant

Searching for weapons that did not exist in Iraq- important
Doing something about weapons that do exist in North Korea- unimportant

Voting rights in Iraq- important
Election fraud in Ohio- unimportant

Bob, I’m on your side, but come on. Rwanda? That was Clinton’s selfishness, though it may have been caused by the Republicans’ hatred for “nationbuilding” (heh).

It looks like this may backfire on the Republicans.

I find this poll very encouraging. Maybe there is hope for this country yet.

You have a point. I hold the Dems and the Reps equally responsible here. The rule of thumb seems to be that if the victims are nonwhites who don’t sit on top of a supply of oil, then it doesn’t matter.

Did they do the trick where Bush talks while Cheney drinks water?

Oh, I was well aware of the political motivation. I didn’t really think that much about Jeb’s stance, but more how this would play with the right to lifers (I assumed that what this was all directed at). THATS pretty much what pissed me off so much about this in fact…its so ridiculously obvious.

I think this was a stupid for both president and congress to get involved in…especially for naked politics. Its bound to bite them squarely on the ass…and I hope it does. How could they be so stupid not to see how transparent this is?

Well, I happen to feel the same about ALL politicians, reguardless of of party. To me they aren’t really human until proven beyond a shadow of a doubt otherwise.

As do I.

Perhaps this has been said already in one of the many related threads here (but I’m too lazy to read through every one).

But this legislature is such a wonderful opportunity for politicians to have their cake and eat it too that they can’t but help trip over themselves to vote it in.

All the “stand up for the preservation of all life” rhetoric neatly translates into: I’m against abortion. The politico.s can now have it both ways - Grandstand and vote for a bill that supports “life” (thus pandering to the guys who brought them to the dance) without having to actually go on record as being against legal abortion (and risk alienating everyone else).

If the sanctity of marriage is so important, then why are they going to great lengths to usurp Mr. Shiavo’s (and Ms. Shiavo’s) wishes? Who’s eroding marriage values?

Huzzah! Maybe some people are waking from the lethargy, apathy and blind allegiance that seems to be taking over this country.

Yeah, yeah, whatever.

An observation from one of my favorite authors:

I agree with the OP.

Ultimately, the new law isn’t going to change anything. It’ll be struck down by the courts for any one of several defects. If Bush doesn’t realize that, he’s an idiot. If he does realize that, he’s being a cynical jerk.

So are we saying that a persistive vegetative state is expected if you are a politican?

Is there some way to retract every vote I ever made?

This may be the angry, hopeless ,bitter little cynic in me talking, but this ain’t gonna bite anybody’s ass. By the time the next election comes around, this will be buried under whatever the next big issue is. The only people who will remember this will be the rabid pro lifers who will remember what a brave stand their politicians made.

Hell, this issue will probably be forgotten completely in six months…unless they manage to drag this out for another six months.

This is a horrible law, IMO. It just sucks. It has no science behind it, and is basically a pandering to emotion.

But… Bush was caught on this one. By the time he got involved, the right-wing press had already worked itself into a frenzy. It’s been non-stop Schiavo talk on NRO and other right-wing publications for days and days. I’m sure Senators and Congressmen have been getting calls from their constituents like crazy. The fact that so many Democrats jumped on board with this one tells you that really what’s going on is that politicians are doing what their constituents are demanding.

But it’s amazing how many of their own principles Republicans will violate over this. Truly pathetic. They say that extreme cases make for bad law - that’s true in spades here.

But how much would it have cost him to shoot it down? How much would it have hurt him to say “This is not a matter for the Federal Government?” I could see if it was an election year…

Well, he should have. Why didn’t he? Because:

A) I think he believes in the issue, and probably thinks he did the right thing, but more importantly -

B) You really should go read some right-wing magazines. THey all a-flutter. The National Review has become completely unhinged over this. I’m sure the Senate and House Republicans are under huge pressure to do something, and if Bush had said no he would have lost a lot of allies, or at least it would have cost him a lot of political capital.

Nontheless, in my opinion this is politics at its worst. And it’s not just the Republicans. An awful lot of Democrats crossed the aisle to vote for this.

I’m going to have to go along with the card-carrying Dems on this one. There’s a site somewhere (I haven’t looked for it yet) that lists how every person in the senate and house voted on any particular issue.

I intend to email every one of my state’s elected officials that voted for this law and express my displeasure. If any voted against it, I’ll send them kudos.

I suggest that every one of you that has strong feelings about this matter do the same. I know from experience that they DO pay attention to emails.

Rule: One or two emails gets a “yeah, so?” response and a canned letter in return.

Five or six and there’s “an issue”.

Over 15 emails that disagree on a particular vote and the reaction is “oh shit!”

Lets get busy and let 'em know they’ve done fucked up.

Sent to my rep, Scott Garrett, R-NJ, who took the time to register a yea vote on this bill. I doubt he’ll pay any attention, being the typical right-wing nutcase he is, but it’s the best I can do for now.
Next year, I plan to get uncommonly busy unseating this totalitarian trash.

Shrub has been pulling this shit for years and we STILL re-elected him, or should I say elected him. Anyway, everything has degraded into politics and there is no hope for this country. This has happened to every superpower the world has ever seen and we are no different. I agree with Harborwolf, if shrub can sweep Iraq under the rug, he sure as hell can do the same here. People will forget, pubs will wave the flag and rave about some jeebus guy and all the dumbfucks will line up to vote for the party with values and morals. The apathy and ignorance have already gone too far and are not coming back. This is just another sad example of that. I mean c’mon, the pubs are the party of morals? Did I die and get reincarnated on some fucked up pseudo-earth? And speakin of fucked up…

Why in the holy hell fuck are we letting her starve to death? If we’re gonna pull the plug, how about a lethal injection? Isn’t cruel and unusual punishment against the law for criminals? WTF??? Now it’s ok for someone disabled who committed no crime? Where the fuck are the dems? Going along with this shit and letting the pubs stick their nose in yet another place they do not belong. The pubs are despicable assholes, but at least they’re not complete worthless pussies like the dems. Although, being a worthless pussy would probably allow things to run more smoothly, i.e. keeping the gov’t the fuck out of my business. Ok, I’m done bashing our so called democracy. I was gonna start a thread about this but it looks like my rant will fit in just fine right here.
