What button? Any response will be conventional. It’s idiotic to think any WMDs will be used against NK when a conventional response will prove overwhelming to NK.
Also, nobody including the US could take out the NK artillery fast enough to avoid massive damage to Seoul.
Something occured to me. The possibility that NK would put a nuke on a ship and try to sail it into an American, SK or Japanese port has been mentioned in the past. Because they can’t miniaturize them enough to put on a missile and their long range missiles aren’t reliable enough.
But what if they put one on a submarine.
Damn. Hope we’re keeping an eye out for such things. Don’t need one sailing into San Fran or Guam and suicide bombing the place.
I read on a Korean news site that North Korea said it would attack maybe today or tomorrow.
My SO and I were talking about this the other day and we concluded that there’s no point worrying. Either nothing happens, and we live, or deep shit happens, in which case we’ll be dead most likely.
I think people are exaggerating the new public indecency law. The Korean police can barely enforce the laws we already have. I doubt they’ll bother with miniskirts. But the wording of the law is pretty vague. We’ll find out once the weather warms up, I suppose. If North Korea hasn’t reduced us to a pile of ashes by then.
Does North Korea even have submarines? Their navy can’t even get from one coast to another so I’d be really surprised if they had subs, and even more surprised if those subs are capable of operating underwater.
I was about to say the same thing. Guam maybe, because at least it’s on the same side of the world. But good luck getting across the entire Pacific. I doubt there’s enough food or fuel in all of North Korea to get a submarine that far. I’d also be willing to bet every single NK submarine has a minder or two from the Seawolf class tagging along wherever they go.
I find it hard to believe that any attack will occur. Anything more powerful than a rubberband or a pea shooter would result in a massive launch of destructive force by the US, and I doubt we’d stop until North Korea was just the northern part of the country of Korea.
If Kim doesn’t shut up, he will either need to wage a “successful” war or look like a fool to the people - he’s using the classic bogeyman to justify the (now admittedly) miserable conditions in NK.
The generals know it’s bullshit; the people know it’s bullshit. The govt may be the only group who doesn’t know the people know.
He’ll fire a missile somewhere and claim it damaged the SK or US so badly, they sued for peace. Being the nice guy, he left them off.
BUT: here is where the script calls for an influx of goods from the defeated enemy as tribute.
He was approached, in NK by a group of US reps - he didn’t want to talk about what they wanted to talk about and they didn’t want to talk about what he wanted to talk about.
It looks like he is being taught to behave himself.
Well, mrAru commented that according to a buddy of his they pulled something that pretty much stopped shortly after the end of the cold war, they ordered an ‘agile player’ exercise. [More or less every ship stationed there cranked up and left the piers in 12 hours or less. His buddy joked that pretty much anybody under the age of 50 hasn’t been in one … though he thought that they were great for knocking out problems and they should do them every couple years just for the heck of it.]
I don’t really know if these are reliable sources, and the top hit is Freep (and I’m sure as fuck not giving them a hit), but there’s a report out there that two North Korean submarines are ‘missing’.
I’m starting to think that Lil’ Kim (and/or the generals in charge) actually want some kind of US peremptory strike. It seems that this latest round of bluster has moved beyond the typical, and into more specifics. Yesterday, the NK military said it had been authorized to attack the U.S. using “smaller, lighter and diversified” nuclear weapons. That is pretty direct.
Today, they moved a KN-08 missile to the NK east coast. They know that everyone can see this. They want them to see it. I think they want the US to strike out at them.
In their child-like view of world geopolitics, they think that this would be a good thing for them. Perhaps they think the rest of the world would get on their side, and would send them stuff.
The bottom line for the NK generals and power brokers is that they want stuff. Mostly for themselves, but also some food for the army so they don’t revolt. The only way they know how to get stuff is to threaten the West. It’s not working like it used to, but they don’t know why. So they are upping the threat level - it’s the only tool they know how to use.
What the likelihood that Kim is actually as brainwashed and deluded as the people he’s ruling? I am sure he went through the same indoctrination as the NK people-- perhaps he thinks the Korean war really was started by the US, too.
I guess my point is-- we’re all assuming the NK leadership is on the level, as far as understanding how geopolitics works . . . and understanding that we could turn them into a parking lot and the rest of the world wouldn’t stop us. Maybe he really does think he could ruin us and the world would be on his side.
