Ok, let's define "ban".

Boy oh boy, another gun thread. Sorry.
This is a honest question, not a debate topic. I hope.
I’ve been all over the other gun threads, and I’ve yet to determine exactly what you folks mean when you say gun “ban”. Particularly in the “slippery slope” arguements, both sides.
Does it mean no guns, of any kind, for anybody, ever?
Or does it mean restrictions on what one can own, and/or when and where you can carry it? Or do you mean any restrictions whatsoever?
To rephrase;
What do you mean when you use the phrase “gun ban”?
Please, don’t argue

I consider a “gun ban,” if said that way, to be a total and complete ban on the manufacture, transport and ownership of a certain type, class, or make of projectile weapon, except for certain special circumstances (eg Law inforcemnt could still own them)

The ban on fully automatic assault weapons is such a ban. However, the time restrictions on purchasing a handgun are not, they are restrictions.

When I hear (or read) the phrase, unqualified, I take it to mean total prohibition.
I pretty much agree with iamthewalrus(:3=.

Manny is either getting slack or he really likes you, he would shit a break if i posted a IMHO topic in his forum.

Cisco, you may be right. I am calling for opinions. He probably hasn’t seen this yet.
It’s ok with me, manhattan, go ahead and move it. I was mostly trying to avoid GD.
Just don’t hurt yourself passing that brick.

What ban on fully automatic assault weapons? It’s legal to posses a machine gun in the U.S. and most states.

As widely anticipated, off to IMHO.

How many states? While owning a machine gun isn’t “banned” in the U.S., they are very strictly restricted (National Firearms Act of 1928). Prospective owners must have a background investigation which (I’ve heard) can take months, and they must pay a $200 “transfer tax” to the Federal government. It must also be stored in such a way as to preclude theft or unauthorized use (i.e., a reasonable degree of security).

And you have to live in a state that allows them. I know they are banned in California except for law enforcement, military, and movie studio armorers. They are also banned in Washington. They are allowed in Oregon (business seen off I-5: “Shoot a real tommy gun!”) and I think Nevada.
