And it may still head the way of Mighty Girl, or of the FloriDopers.
This season ain’t been any fun, dudes…
“Jeanne” just made landfall on the SE coast of PR, expected to cross SE to NW. A minimal Cat-1 or a maximal Tropical Storm during this time, and the Deliriouses are duly prepared. But things being the way they are with PREPA (our electric co.), I may be unplugged from later this afternoon to the weekend. In any case, I’ll update as the infrastructure conditions allow (don’t want to overtax the bandwidth to the continent, either)
Oh, and…
To the the god Jurakán: Give us a break. You’re being unreasonable, great Lord of Destructive Renewal. With all this lush tropical environment and relaxed attitude and free flow of rum drinks and high-grade ganja, virgins to sacrifice are few and far between in the region; besides it looks to me like we are already doing an excellent job of destroying our surroundings without your help. Really.
good luck out there.
it really is quite the season this year.
…squish, squish, squish…
(everything in this house is moist. Not wet, just moist. Totally pervasive humidity…)
OK! We finally got our power back on at home on Friday evening. Everyone in the Delirious circle seems to be doing fine.
We got some wicked flooding and loss of utilities, plus some 3 directly attributed fatalities, but overall are doing OK. Couple thousand people had to take shelter but the number of homeless is relatively low, nothing like '98 or '89 and aid is starting to roll in. The really big losses will be to agriculture and to the prestige of PREPA, who apparently tried to start a controlled isolation-and-shutdown of the affected regions, but then they detected an incipient cascade and decided to just shut down the entire system preemptively. Small problem with that: by not waiting until the local systems actually safed out, they had no initial idea of where it was safe to restart until someone actually went out and looked. This adds between 1 and 3 days to restoration time. And of course, with no power, the water treatment plants can’t pump. Fun for all.
But, nothing here like Ivan. Jeebus Christmas, what a monster! I’m seeing some unbelievable images from the AL coast! We got lucky Big Time.
jrd
Oh, yeah… the Delirious Frotress held on quite well, but apparently at some point a gutter got clogged by debris and I discovered the many points where water can leach thru a concrete block wall. So there’s some scraping and applying of sealant in my near future.
I’m glad you guys are all right; houses are fixable, after all.
Ivan was a real bastard. Especially since I had to drive for 24 hours (with an hour and a half for a nap) to get away from him. And then he missed us, but if he hadn’t, well, it’s been nice having a city here. I don’t like to swim all that much.
24 hours behind the wheel. shudder twitch
Not that I’m happy it hit anybody, believe me! But it was a hellish evacuation. Absolutely horrid.
I feel your pain JR, Jeanne may have been a tropical storm, but damage she did. It has rained for 4 straight days already (today on and off) and I am feeling moldy already. Everything is wet and 1% more of humidity in the air and we’d be needing scuba equipment to breathe.
I don’t have any more nails to bite. We need to negotiate a truce with Jurakán. My husband asks if sacrificing a cow is good enough… well, he’ll just BBQ a steak, but is the intention that counts.
