OK, now my computer has gone insane!

I was having trouble with my computer restarting while online. Now this happens:

I log on and go to a website, for example, Ebay. When I try to log in there, the program locks up. I reinstalled AOL 6.0, but it does the same thing every time. If I try to go through IE 5.5, the same thing happens. I am forced to ctrl-alt-del the system and kill AOL and/or IE. This started last night (11/26). I fear that I have a sinister virus although none has been detected. I DO NOT want to reformat and recover, but that may be the last result. What sucks is that I have lost my “favorite places” folder.

I had backed up AOL 5.0 to a CDRW about a week ago. Attempts to copy that back to the hard drive failed because the file “amsvcr.dll” was corrupted.

What the heck happened?

If you think its a virus, download the free DOS version of F-Prot from http://www.f-prot.com/f-prot/download/getfpdosfree.html and scan for viruses with that.

Also, run a thourough scandisk.

Try downloading AOL again, removing all of the AOL junk from the network control panel, uninstall AOL, and reinstall AOL.
