We are fully informed (I hope!) about what you don’t want. What do you want? Give us some of that substance you keep kvetching about. Tell us how. Give us the CarnalK Plan. What are you willing to do, and where’s the cutoff?
What if there is no good plan? What if all we got is the choices between bad, worse and utterly horrible? Give us some of that substance you got so much of.
I don’t need a new plan. They just need more personnel and resources to process the influx. They need more resources and personnel intercepting the boats coming across the Mediterranean. They need the heel dragging member countries to accept their share of refugees. They probably should set up camps in Greece, but the Greek government is very resistant to that.
Directly settling refugees from Turkish, Lebanese and other close camps would probably cut down on both non-refugee migrants and the number of people dying trying to get to Greece but that would require more money and political will.
The problem is that they still are a bunch of separate countries. It’s not like in the U.S. where the feds could just say “we’re letting x number in and here’s where they are going.”
I guess if want my one “xenophobic” idea it’s that if I were them I’d cut normal immigration levels to balance out just how many refugees are coming in. Just so there’s time to properly integrate and European lifestyle/culture isn’t overwhelmed.
Britain to take in unaccompanied refugee children from conflict areas.
Dopers who’ve made the Big Mistake…(“Have kids!” they said, “It’ll be great!”, they said.)…
Your kids stay with you, they are hungry and may get killed at any moment. Give them to the nice English lady, and you may never see them again. Choose between maybe never knowing where they are, or knowing exactly where they are buried?
No good choices. Bad, worse and horrible. So it goes…
(This is not intended as a rebutal, and should not be so interpreted.)
The U.K. will take in identified children from Syrian Refugee camps, all details will be recorded on file, The U.N. will keep a copy of the records and any family members who enquire will have the child reunited with them
This is incontestable. Assuming I was to live as an average citizen in either place, I too would much rather live anywhere in Germany than anywhere in Syria. Who wouldn’t prefer to live in a mostly stable, peaceful, and prosperous society?
But however bad they had it in their homeland, shouldn’t Germans reasonably be permitted to expect that the newcomers respect their cultural norms? German women should not be expected to “have it better” by being merely groped, harassed, and assaulted because the men who did the groping came from a place where you can’t decide if you should root for the government or the rebels, because if the rebels win they might turn out to be ISIS. That should not be the problem of German women.
Yes there are learnt behaviour problems that will cause problems with teenagers, I think that we should be looking at 10 and under as this group would have the best success rate. The practical side we have to look at is that their education if any has been seriously interrupted and we only have 2 years to get them up to speed for them to go up to secondary school get their GCSE’s and on to 6th form college and hopefully on to university. Education is the answer for them in the U.K. and in Syria if they choose to return.
I am a great one for playing devils advocate when necessary to get a debate moving but in this case there is more than enough information on the problems with unattached children in the media, the question here should be is how do we solve the problem?
The UK has no provisions for people who for whatever reason don’t reach certain academic milestones by an arbitrary age?
In the US, if you don’t graduate high school you can take the equivalency test later on in life and then move on to college, again, at any time. (My spouse missed high school graduation due to how often he was hospitalized for surgery for his birth defect, he took the GED then went on to college, as an example) The UK has nothing like that?
Because it seems to me saying “you have two years to catch up or you’re on the rubbish tip for life” is not a good strategy for integrating newcomers into your society.
On paper yes we do have provision BUT the dam government keep on cutting back. I know it is hard to believe but the U.K. has a shortage of state schools and we have children who do not know if they have a place when they have to change schools. We also have a shortage of teachers in our state schools, My grandson who is in his exam year had to go back a year because there was not a teacher for his level, Through hard work my grandson and his buddies had got themselves a year ahead and were looking for A star results, with 2 months to go thankfully they have found another teacher. I have used a personal example which I am sorry to say is the norm rather than the exception.
I believe that we can prepare 10 year olds for secondary school within 2 years and it must be remembered that the younger ones will have extra time before going up.
One of my daughters failed her exams and later in life she went to night school and resat them and passed but she had to find the tuition cost and the fee’s for the exams and this is what puts youngsters off doing resits
The UK has a range of adult education offerings, from basic literacy/numeracy through to open degree courses such as The Open University. This is a really bizarre derailment from topic.
The other poster wasnt vague about what he meant. His next line was “In that…”. How old til they aren’t a child and what about all those 18y olds who lie. Seems pretty silly but clear.
So Europe should solve the problems of all these folks just because they can get to Europe? It seems like strategic competitors to Europe could cause a bit of a drag by loading up container ships of economic migrants worldwide and dumping them on the shores. Europe couldn’t do anything to stop it either. That’d be racist.
A major problem that nobody wants except for the extreme right, it may seem a strange statement but they are gaining support and gaining in confidence. This weekend in Dover we had protest from B.N.P. National Front, England First, Combat 18 and possibly Blood and Honour. In Luton another far right so called Christian group verbally assaulted Muslims. The extreme right is coming out of the woodwork on mainland Europe. The growing number of migrants coming to Europe is only strengthening a shift to the far right and the only way to stop it is to stop the migrants.
