To piggyback on Pochacco’s thread about entrances, what about exits?
One of the best has to be Slim Pickins as Major T.J. “King” Kong in Dr. Strangelove
The link is to a longer version of the scene. By the way, that’s James Earl Jones giving back all those “negative function” reports on the bomb bay doors.
The Illusionist, when the police try to arrest him.
I had the entire movie figured out literally the moment they showed whats-her-face’s murder, except for that one scene. It took me totally by surprise, although I feel a little silly for falling for it.
The priest in Rome, Open City as the Germans are about to shoot him “It’s an easy thing to die with dignity. What’s difficult is to live with dignity.”
Old Lodge Skins’ almost exit in Little Big Man “Sometimes the magic works, sometimes it doesn’t.”
Robocop:
“Dick…YOU"RE FIRED!!!”
Empire Strikes Back:
Leia “I love you!”
Han Solo “I know”
Full Metal Jacket
“What is your major malfunction numbnuts!”
Deep Blue Sea
“…we’re going to pull together and find a way out of here!!! First, we’re…” [CHOMP]
and for the nerd-os
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings
“Fly you fools!”
The death scene of Roy Battie the replicant in Blade Runner. “All those moments will be lost, like tears in rain… Time to die.”
Shane riding off into the sunset in the movie of the same name. Classic ambiguous exit. And continuing a mental walk of old, classic movies, the “exit” of the titular dog from Old Yeller, and the fog walk exit scene ending Casablanca.
One more came to mind: the very literal exit scene at the end of The Truman Show. “Good morning, and in case I don’t see ya: good afternoon, good evening, and good night!”
I would go with the Godfather’s final scenes. The long musically scored scenes of retribution concluding with the capos kissing Michael’s Ring and the door slowly closing showing that Michael is now as his father was before.
