Thank you very much for the consideration, and I would state that an apology would be both nice and appropriate. With regard to Shodan, he’s my comrade-in-arms, though sometimes I worry that I’m too far to the right for him.
Since Tomndebb responded to this topic, maybe I can get in a brief comment.
tuckerfan, you might want to see what Walter Cronkite really said that night over forty years ago. You are much too young to remember it. “The most trusted man in America,” for that is how he was known, had just returned from a trip to Vietnam.
Notice that he made it clear from the beginning that his words were speculative, personal and subjective.
Cronkite’s Commentary, February, 1968
You think that is a Communist point of view? Is it always “Communist” to negotiate?
(Peace and a hug from your local aging hippie!)
Starving, I didn’t realize that there wasn’t a lot of give and take on discussing the opinions in this forum either. Ya learn something every day. How y’all doin?
Whooooooosh! I’m forty, so I grew up watching “Uncle Walter” and I know well how good of a journalist he was, unlike most of the chairwarmers on TV these days. He actually bothered to learn about the subject he was covering, rather than simply reading from a teleprompter. If Cronkite said it, then it was based on a reasoned and informed position, and not simply a ploy to curry favor with anyone.
If, however, you think that SA sees Walter’s statements as anything other than another symbol of this nation’s “downward slide” then you have more faith in him than I do.
Ah, so that’s why I feel so comfortable with you!
Hi, darlin’ Zoe! It’s good to hear from you. I’m doin’ fine, thanks, and I hope and trust you are as well.
And I’m pretty sure you’re okay in this forum; it was in IMHO, the forum allegedly for frank discussions, where I ran afoul of a foul-mooded mod.
He did, and to that extent his actions were commendable. I’m not of the belief, however, that it’s the journalist’s job to try to influence how we view the issues. Their job, in my opinion, is to report the facts. We are perfectly able of analyzing the situation and coming to our own conclusions, thank you very much, and when journalists try to influence the position we take on the issues, or attempt to tell us how to think, that’s when their very human and unavoidable bias comes into play. And given the fact that journalists are overwhelmingly liberal in their politics, it’s unavoidable that the bias that comes through will be a liberal bias.
In my opinion, when it comes to journalists the guidelines should be “Just the facts, ma’am”, or “sir” as the case may be.
Nah, Uncle Walt didn’t do much damage. Dan Rather or Peter Jennings in one week probably exhibited more bias than Cronkite did in his entire career.
Aauurgh! We are capable of analyzing the situation and coming to our own conclusion…etc.
My apologies, Zoe, my school-teacherly friend. I have no idea how that awkard bit of typistry occurred.
Actually CBS was notorious for doing this. They even forced Walter Cronkite into early retirement and replaced him with a worthless hack. They apparently killed a slew of “rural” shows in the early 70s that were doing find to very well in ratings. Thanks wiki, here is my cite: Rural purge - Wikipedia
Thank you for the link Zoe. It was good to read that. I only remember what he said that night from some clips I’ve seen. The reason why it had such an impact was because Walter was the unbiased reporter that most viewers trusted.
Well I saw the sarcasm dripping off of it at least. I never expected you to get a reaction though.
*My bolding. *
I completely agree with your bolded portion of the post. Not so much with the unbolded portion though I understand what you mean.
Well, yeah. But that’s hardly what happened in the thread in question.
My own modest contribution to the Olbermann hijack: he is a blowhard, but a damned smart one. His is one of the quickest minds I’ve ever seen on the tube.
Four problems with this, just off the top of my head -[ol][li]This is not positive mentions of Wm. F. Buckley, []It is not happening in the other thread, []Nobody mentioned any conspiracy[*]You are stupid.[/ol][/li]

Sorry, Shodan, but I simply cannot trust your opinion of another person’s stupidity.
Guess you don’t buy into that “Takes one to know one!” thing.
Your post is my cite.

Shodan
