I didn’t before. I realize he was there for comic relief, to ease some tension at a time when there was, unfortunately, no tension (Oh no! Obi-Wan’s about to get caught! Will he survive? Um, yes, I think so…).
He played Jar Jar n the same sense that Andy Serkis played Gollum. Apparently he did a lot of the physical movements that they mapped the CGI character onto.
True, but in that same sense, Frank Oz was the main puppeteer controlling Yoda, the actual one you see on screen, so in essence, he portrayed Yoda more than Ahmed Best portrayed the Jar Jar you see.
Not necessarily. Is Anthony Daniels controlling or portraying C-3PO? Portraying. Why? Because he’s using his voice and actions and unique style to create a character. How is that different than what Frank Oz did with Yoda? Yoda is basically a costume that was to small for Frank Oz to fit into.
coughcough That’s a pre-release Internet Movie DabaBase entry for Star Wars Episode III. The information on that page was reported by fanboys and entered by database hacks who don’t always get the detalis right. This is not the official Lucasfilm cast list.
Note that Ahmed Best is correctly credited as “Jar Jar Binks (voice)” in both The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. When the credits finally roll on the silver screen for Episode III in 2005, I assure you they’ll show Amed Best as “Jar Jar Binks (voice)” too.
I just wish they’d post Laserdisc details when I submit 'em. I submitted details on the laserdisc release of The Fountainhead to them twice over the last three years, and it’s still not listed.
Now I’m all confused. He was there for comic relief? Shouldn’t he have been funny at some point then?
I thought he was there to make me hate life and embrace the darkness within. Are you sure of your facts? Frankly, I find it hard to credit this “comic relief” theory of yours.
