Oklahoma Sooners

I did do a search to find out why the Oklahoma football team is called the Sooners but I did not obtain an answer. Would any of you people out there tell me, please?

It has to do with the great Land Rush to homestead land in the Oklahoma Territory that was opened up in 1889. Those that jumped the gun, and entered the territory before the official release date on April, were dubbed “sooners”, presumably because they got there sooner than they were supposed to. The moniker stuck, and is now extended to all Oklahoma residents. All the details can be found here.

April 22, that is. Carry on.

And other settlers were called “Boomers” hence the school’s fight song “Boomer Sooner”, which pretty must consists of the words “Boomer Sooner” repeated several teams.

Actually, that’s not accurate. The term “sooner” comes from the whores of the old west who dubbed their Oklahoman clients “sooners” because of their unfortunate tendency towards premature ejaculation. It’s for similar reasons today that we refer to Texans as “limpdicks” and Tennesseeans as “miserable, inbred cocksuckers.”

“Boomers” lobbied for the opening of Indian land to whites.

Anybody else appreciate the irony of the Sooners vs. the Seminoles? At the moment, we’re ahead 13-0.

Since y’all must be college football fans, I’m sure someone here can answer this question for me:

What is the significance of the “add-on” emblems that I see on a lot of player’s helmets? For example, the tomahawks (sp?) I see plastered on the Florida State helmets (especially Weinke). I always assumed that for the so-called “skill” players these represented touchdowns, sacks, interceptions etc. But I swear I’ve seen them on OFFENSIVE LINEMEN! What do they signify then? Pass rushes successfully blocked? Holding penalties not received? Number of Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburgers eaten? Or is the quaterback’s helmet just too full of the things and he’s forced to rent space on the lineman’s head for storage?

By the way, congratulations Sooners, whatever the hell it stands for.

They are awarded according to the specific teams criteria. It could be a sack, 5 tackles in a game, interception, or even the number of BUCs eaten, if the team chooses to.

As for the fight song (The Pride of Oklahoma), it also continues on with “Sooner born, sooner bred, and when I die, I’ll be sooner dead…”

If you want anymore Sooner trivia, I was born on University Blvd. in Norman a few days before that seasons OU-NU game. Fans don’t get much more passionate than I. I actually felt a bit sorry for my fiancee who had to put up with my hooten’ and hollerin’ this evening.

DMC, since I’m a born and raised Husker fan I must denounce you. I also feel obligated to inform you that next year, in Lincoln when you don’t have Heupel to throw the ball to a random spot downfield and hope someone runs under it, you will lose, big time! Nebraska was jinxed when SI picked them #1. Yeah, I’m sore about the loss(es) this year, you got a problem with that? I was cheering for the sooners tonight (gotta root for the conference).

HUSKER POWER!

Dignan, I was rooting for you guys for the same reason. The Big 12 was sorely lacking their deserved respect this year.

Sadly, my fiance is also a Shucker, er Husker. It’s amazing that her father is allowing me to marry his daughter.

That would be fiancee, not fiance. (Not that there would be anything wrong with that)
