Now doing the trip in reverse order: automobile (Uber) to train station; train en route to the Big Smoke, then eventually catch a plane.
Reunion went well:
*Some friends who live in the area had some of us to their house;
*school alumni office set up a pub night in a sports bar (Jays lost!!) and we met the new Dean;
*attended Dean’s breakfast the next day, and heard her pitch about all the wonderful things we’re doing we need money;
*toured the building and saw all the renos, with tour guides from first year (several of us old dogs respected alumni ended up giving school and career advice to the kids eager young colleagues);
*football game in the afternoon (we lost), with the Dean in the next row;
*supper for our year, organised by the wonderful team of volunteers from our year, with welcoming comments from the Dean.
Caught up with most of the classmates who were there, and with my especial buddies. Wore my class leather jacket everywhere. Worried about the health news from some of them , congratulated others on how their kids were doing and the retirements. Touched by some of the reminisces I heard from some of them about me. Saw the list of those who are no longer with us (gulp!). Gathered e-mail and phone numbers to stay in touch.
At the church waiting for fachverwife’s concert. It’s Bach. Lots of Bach. Bach, Bach, Bach.
I appreciate Bach. I understand Bach’s importance. I even enjoy some of his instrumental stuff. I do not like his vocal music.
Every once in a while somebody asks me when I’m going to start singing with this particular organization. My answer is always “as soon as they stop singing Bach.” (They only sing Bach.)
Decided to actually make dinner this evening. I’ve had some boneless chicken thighs in the freezer for some time and need to use them. Thawed two of them, beat them into submission, dipped in flour, egg and Panko, then fried in ghee. Steamed some corn and made some saffron rice to go with. Et voila!
Tomorrow I’ll go pick up my new glasses from Costco. Also need to do a bit of light shopping locally. Otherwise, not much happening.
Howdy Y’all! Well, no pew plop for me today. I got a text that one of the scheduled Chalice bearers has covid, so I stepped up. It’s kinda like a pew plop as aside from the processional and recessional and handlin’ the Chalice durin’ Communion it’s sit in a pew and perform the required aerobics. OK, I was up front and had to sit up straight and look well-behaved. We got the peach hot wings and they were good. Not real spicy and more of a just sweet rather than peach flavor. They are sump’n we’d get maybe two or three times a year just to be different. It started to rain around nine this mornin’ and rained til around twoish. Glad we took umbrellas with us as it was pretty steady most of the time. The rest of the day was spent in nappage, day drinkin’ and other RDOS inactivities.
Evening all. Three loads of laundry cleaned and dried and put away, dined at Olive Garden, did some paper-filing and spent a couple hours at the gym, and have now sammiched and am in sloth mode for the balance of the evening. Temperature is down to 55F, I came out of the gym around 5:20pm and it was the first time I felt like maybe I should have had a jacket or light covering with me; the real true harbringer of fall here in N. Ali-bama.
Olive Garden annoyed me a little bit, I got my order taken, got my Diet Coke and water, then the Big Salad Bowl and breadsticks, all was in order…and then no more than 90 seconds after I got my salad my main course arrived. Now, maybe it’s just me, but I like to spend at least a little time with my salad before getting into the Pasta/Steak/Whatever I’m having and was a little disconcerted to have to work on both of them at the same time. I know, First World Problems, but it’s my dinner that I’m paying for so a little complaint is justified, IMHO.
red, guess you’re right, I’ve always been an early diner, but it is designed to beat the Church crowds. Works well except at Texas Roadhouse, which always seems to have a line at the door waiting to get in at opening.
FCM, I hope training can cure Otis of the jumping instinct; that strikes me as moderately dangerous, especially with the kids around your house so much. And your planning shopping reminds me of my Kroger trips and gathering points for cheap gasoline–makes me do some forward planning.
Cookie, ever considered a debit card from your bank’s checking? I finally got one last year and it has been quite valuable.
Knots, I am not a Polar Bear Club Member, so I’ll forgo the did in Lake Michigan.
Oopsie, you’ll never lose your memory of Bailey, but the hurting will pass eventually.
Meanwhile, here’s some hugs {{{ }}}. And glad you’re having better luck with the new hires than boo fae has with some of her old ones…and I haven’t looked hard at a quarter in some time, will have to pay a little more attention to them.
JtC, hope Harry can ascertain the state of the house(keeper).
Piper, nice that the reunion went well. Never went to any of mine (my HS graduating class was over 900 students, so hard to remember many of them and I went to a large University, so not into reunions there). But glad you had fun and safe journey home.
Pavo, can’t recall ever hearing Bach’s vocals, but I’ll rely on your taste.
Dad gummit, I do try to proofread my posts before leaving the page, how I missed that…
swampy, your like me and soccer refereeing; when there is a need and no one else is available, there I am…and it goes for you and Church duties.
And that may be all for the night, need to do a couple more laundry loads early tomorrow before Ubering down to the dealership and getting that new car smell…take care all and catch you on the next MMP.
Silicone muffin cups. Just pop the veggycicle out and put it in his stainless steel bowl, then put the bowl in the crate.
Which is the most important thing!
I agree. I know that I can always eat my salad after my hot dish, but it is very annoying when that happens.
I haven’t heard anything yet, but Harry doesn’t get out as much as he used to. He’s going to be 87 in November, I guess he’s got an excuse to slow down a little. Plus, Mrs H changed the rules after his tumble down the gully.
I checked the police blotter just in case she got run over or something, but her name wasn’t listed. That’s a good thing.
So, the soup was good. I’m kinda iffy about the cornbread, though. All of the recipes call for peanut oil and I’ve been using veg oil because I didn’t like what the olive oil did. We finally bought some peanut oil HOLY COW!!! That stuff is expensive! and I used it tonight. I was less than pleased but Hubs liked it. He said it tasted like his grandmother’s cornbread.
I asked him if it tasted good enough to justify the expense and he said it didn’t. He also said he would like it better if I started frying the cornbread but had no more details as to how that was achieved. I guess I’ll look that up tomorrow.
I’m not afraid to try it but I’m wondering how well cornbread batter will last in the fridge. Even if I cut the recipe in half, it will still be too much for one meal.
Metalmouse, I hope picking up your new car is seamless. We had issues with a couple of dealerships because they would wait until we got there, at the time we said we would, to start washing the travel dirt off the car. That backfired for them both times, I refused to wait for them to put the dealer stickers on the car and when they said it would only take a minute, I told them I didn’t want them and would follow behind them and peel them off while they were fresh.
Excellent! I hope you enjoy the new pieces. I’m still trying names out on reindeer guy. He has quite the vibe, needs just the right name. He strikes me as being a British reindeer.
Sooooo much laundry today. My cat sitting duties are over now. His human returned Saturday night, so he had sleepy buddies last night.
Ugh, work tomorrow. I have to go in a bit early. We have people due to arrive at 8:30am. Le sigh.
Panthers managed to beat the Jets, Packers won(but gave me angina in the process). Dinner tonight is Poke loin, baked N.O.T. with bacon and cheese, and black eyed peas with jalapenos and country ham. And a Wisconsin Old Fashioned. A real pork-a-palooza tonight.
So you’re waiting for a Bach scratch.
Maggie Wonderbeagle liked them. Gordie did not.
It’s 69 degrees here nice and I’ve had the windows open for the last 8 anna half hours..
Low fifties here, and having a fire on the back patio.
Concert went well (even if it was Bach), but my wife took a tumble as she stood for her trio. The chorus and orchestra performed from the back gallery, so the audience can’t see them. All we heard was a big thump. Conductor kept going, so she had to scramble up and find her entrance. Then sing two more arias.
A little bruised and dreading tomorrow, but she’s doing fine.
Summer came back for a visit here today. It hit the mid 90s.

I tend to use regular vegetable oil in the cornbread and, if I make it in the skillet (like, when I have company), I use peanut or sunflower oil to grease the pan. My hillbilly granny taught me to put the greased skillet in the oven to heat up before putting the batter in. That makes for a wonderful crust. For just me, I make corn muffins because they freeze better.
That’s an easy one, especially in the summer when you don’t want to heat the kitchen up with the oven. Just make your batter and drop it onto a griddle or into a greased skillet and treat it like one would a fritter.
That’s where you freeze the cornbread. If you make it in the skillet, it freezes well for dressing. If you make muffins, wrap two standard muffins in a damp napkin and nuke for 1 minute to thaw them. I wouldn’t refrigerate the batter because the leavening tends to do weird things.
I was also wondering about what would happen if I left the combined baking soda and baking powder unattended in the fridge. I’m guessing it wouldn’t work that well, but Hubs said he thought that’s what his grandmother did. (I highly suspect Hubs didn’t spend any time in the kitchen with his grandmother, he was too busy being a free-range kid.)
If she’s still awake and if her health allows, a hefty dose of ibuprofen or naproxen (Motrin or Aleve) taken before a night’s sleep works against the pain and inflammation so morning will be less stiff and ouchy.
I fell 10 days ago and the ER suggested I take 800-1000 mg of ibuprofen before sleeping and every 6-8 hours the next day.
Dicey, I remember my dad, or some other hardass, demanding money off the price of a car for the advertising sticker on the car. By the way, even old stickers will come off easily if you heat them with a hair dryer.
