Old Cigarette Technology? (water-Filled Microcapsules)

Many years ago, a new type of filtered cigarette was put on the market; it had filters which had microspheres full of water in the filter. You were supposed to crush the filter end before lighting up-and the water would somehow combine with the smoke for a less irritating smoke.
Does anybody make these water microspheres anymore? I wonder if you could make these filled with paint, so you could apply a dry paint to a wall?

Microencapsulation technology was used extensively by NCR back in the 1960s. I remember their exhibits at the 1964-5 World’s Fair where they had paper with nmicroencapsulated perfume, so that if you rubbed or scratched it, you’d get the smell of the perfume. I would imagine they still use this for “scratch and sniff” stuff. NCR (which, after all, stood for National Cash Register) used the tech nology for carbonless copypaper. I figured they must’ve mixcroencapsulated siodium ferrocyanidde on one paper and ferric ammonium sulfate on the other, because when you printed them together you got that characteritic Prussian Blue. But i suppose they could’ve used something else.

The cigarette you refer to was, I’m pretty sure, named Oasis, but searches only turn up the song “Cigarettes and Alcohol” by the band Oasis. The discontinued cigarettes had a logo of a stylized man smoking a hookah. That always seemed to be a stretch to me. Oasis, as I recall, had little microchambers in the filter running parallel to the cigarette axis (I don’t think they wrere micro-encapsulations) that you were supposed vto rupture by pinching it between your thumb and forefinger. Even as a kid I didn’t buy that as being equivalent to drawing the smoke through a container of water – it’s more like smoking through a soggy filter. You could get THAT effect just by dipping your filter into water. I always figured it was a gimmick. i suspect other people thought so, too, and that it died and was never revived.

Wikipedia on micro-encapsulation. Lotsa links:

I don’t think Oasis is the brand you’re thinking of.

Oasis

I’ve seen old ads for the brand you’re thinking of with the man and the hookah. Can’t find any info on it right now.

There was “Brighton Convertibles” which had some kind of encapsulated menthol in the filter and if you bit down on the filter, the cigarette became a menthol.
