(Old) Dark Skies in the MMP

Sounds like every PT I’ve had the displeasure to have known.

Another smooth day, apart from the one late Air. Of course there were 2 100lbs rewraps I had to do. I did my Senior Day shopping, they got Oktoberfest beers in. I heard a bunch of sirens about half hour ago. There was a trunk dropped off the sidewalk around the corner from me. It apparently was empty, and not a mimic, as I would have guessed.

Then will thee churn the butter and mend the wagon covering?

Good luck?

Poo.

Chloé needs her own tactical assault possum. Cool sunrise, too.

I sent a request. So you’ll know it’s not a random weirdo, but a specific one.

{{{JtC}}}

Another perfect day on tap here in Ory-gun! We’re currently at 50Ferrets with a forecast high of 80F. Fine with me!

I neglected to answer BooFae’s topic question in my previous post. Bad Tree! And I’m sad to say I haven’t had the joy of stargazing in a dark sky reserve. Yet. I love stargazing and try to go out on clear nights when I can to goggle at the skies. I wish I had known about the Mount Cook National Park dark sky reserve when I was there in the early 2000s! But alas, we passed through during the day, and I missed that part entirely. Met a few keas, though. I’d love to go back, too. I do remember well seeing the Southern Cross and an impressive number of stars during a drive with my husband along the Great Ocean Road in Australia. Just… wow. And maybe I’ll get to a dark sky reserve in Arizona one of these days when I’m visiting my folks.

Belated happy birthday wishes, Knott! I hope it NOHs (Not Our Herald) your best year ever!

metal mouse, that excursion to the Galapagos sounds jaw-dropping. What a fabulous experience, to see the dark skies at sea! I’m happy you had it. Glad you were able to resolve the computer bug and also that you have an assistant coach this year to do the scut work help out!

Taters, I’m sorry you’re not yet done with the eye stuff. Understandable that you’re sick of it. I hope you have an enjoyable afternoon, at least.

red! Congrats on engineering your escape from the hospital! So glad you’re with Sis and soon to be home again. (Obviously not as glad as you are, I’m sure!)

Mollie, how exciting to be on the threshold of a new, important change in your life! Here to provide whatever support I can on your journey. And continued thanks for the sunrise photos – you’ve caught some dandies recently! Armadillos… those I will never see here. Your neighbor will never know how much of their lawn you salvaged by moving it along.

Nettie, I’m with you on others in keeping mostly to the solid colors over prints. It’s just a preference and much easier to mix and match my monotonous wardrobe.

FCM, exciting news about Roxy playing cello! It may become a lifetime pleasure for her! Congrats on getting the new computer set up.

JtC, I’m glad you had a nice day out in Huntington and alleviated some boredom for the day. Good onya for supporting the arts, you crazy classy lady, you. You are wise to stay detached from all the family drama. Re elk, Oregon has a lot. There was a herd that roamed between our property and some adjoining Weyerhaeuser land when we first moved here, but after Weyerhaeuser logged theirs off, the elk moved to a more acceptable locale. I still see them around, just not on this place anymore. And… now, don’t you go ruining all your hard work up to this point by acting on your impatience to get back to a normal life. It’s hard, for sure. But you just have to let things take their own time. Can’t rush bread rising, and you can’t rush this. < putting away the shaking finger > ETA: And I see you’ve regained a good perspective on the situation. You’re enduring a lot, but as you realize, it’s not worth the cost if you don’t. Hang in there!

Sorry for the dead Kindle, VanGo. I hope it’s not too much hassle getting everything set up on the new one. I hope your visit to the eye doctor yields some solutions for what’s going on with your sight. It sounds kind of miserable.

Yayyy for Ariel rides, wet one!

doggio, your drives around Raleigh make Ewe-Jean drivers look positively courteous. And they’re not. Stay safe, won’t you? I like your ideas about kale, too. That trunk is… crazy.

Hope you get an answer on the deck soon, Oopsie, and also that it’s the right answer!

swampy, your country fried steak meal sounds delicious. As usual! And I’ll add my happy procuring wishes to metal mouse’s.

shoe, so cool that the former Big Boss turned out to be useful and nice. I have a feeling you’ll miss him when he’s gone. And yeah about goulash – but sometimes those are just the most comforting recipes, aren’t they?

sticky buns, your house looks marvelous! Classy and purple! Really beautiful.

Oh. It will. And I hope your cursed friend gets his money back. What an awful thing to have happened.

Lily, sounds like a fine dinner last night!

Thanks to everyone for the kind wishes re the pond repair. I am so hopeful, but it will be awhile to see if it holds. I’m resisting the temptation to scamper down and see if it’s filling, but I know I’ll be disappointed. The creek that feeds it is at a trickle at this time of year, so it will take some weeks.

I, too, am sad to lose both Dolly Parton and Tim Curry in the same week. Monster talents, both.

There’s a batch of Ciabatta bread rising and I still haven’t worked out anything for breakfast. It may be awhile yet, since the bread is at least two hours away. I got behind in keeping carbohydrates around.

I contacted a luthier this morning via email and hopefully will hear back soon. I have a very fine guitar that I want to start playing again. It’s been so long, I need to get the neck reset and light action strings put on so I can rebuild calluses. It’s an embarrassing number of years since I picked it up and I’m sure I’m in for some rude shocks over that, but I miss it. Maybe the old girl still has a few tunes left in her.

Left a message for the chimney sweep to get that done before wood-burning season begins. Already time to get ready for winter, I can hardly believe it.

Apart from these monumental tasks, Ollie and I will enjoy a quiet, restful day today. Aahhh.

Hope you all have satisfying days, too!

Actually, I’ve found I can speed it up in summer here without any quality problems in the finished product  . Just need to put the dough (covered, of course) on the patio. I use the Rhodes frozen dough, and can cut the thaw&rise time from ca. 8 hours to ca. 5-6 hours (depending on temperature that day). Won’t work after about October, probably, though, and does have the “out of sight, out of mind” downside. I’ve ruined several tries by forgetting it was out there until it had become a hopelessly over-risen unsalvageable blob monster. I’ve learned to set a reminder alarm on my phone to check the dough.

That is possibly the best description EVAH.

For something with legs roughly the length of my middle finger, they’re surprisingly quick.

I tried to catch one once, during a camping trip in my misspent youth. Thought it would be easy. Nope. Managed to juuuuust barely brush it with my fingertips.

They look and feel like a football, with ears, except also with a rocket cannon hidden in their butt.

I’m not sure if I should put “Identifiable Weirdo” on my resume or a t-shirt.

I don’t like to rush it. Better flavors develop the longer the dough proves. But we all have our own methods and preferences!

Behold, from a coupla weeks ago at work. Look carefully at the second bin, under the one that’s apparently sentient and learning basic math.

The one under it.

Oh, dear.

Yeast dough does weird things in warm humidity. Even in a chilled walk-in.

Pretty sure that top bin could’ve learned sign language, or possibly how to run my taxes.

Hey! You were at State at the same time as me!

I’m a little bit more with it today. I knew the day would come that I would get the prescription, but it still came as a shocker.

It’s funny. I interviewed with the Endo for about an hour, and you could see her ticking boxes in her head, and when I read her note yesterday morning, it almost matched point by point my counsellor’s letter.

Oh yeah - it was going to town, ripping up the grass.

It’s Clayface!

Who else flicked themselves off, cuz I sure did, and I’m the one who posted this. (“Wait, is that the right length? … yup, looks about right.”)

In situations like this, I’ve found “Both!” to be the best solution.

Your neighbor has a bad grub problem eating away at his grass roots. 'Dillo just getting breakfast.

Grubs = big larvae (chickens luuuurrrrve them BTW if you dig any up, and know any local chickens) that turn into big bugs.

Some folks down south will suggest putting cayenne pepper on the lawn, to deter dillos and their digging, to which I’ve heard more than one person retort, “That just seasons 'em grubs.”

Niece had to cancel today, so no lunch outing. Picked up some sushi for lunch and a few other things. Housekeeping came and terrorized Sadie for a half hour. That eeeeevil vacuum, doncha know. I’ll likely make a batch of something in awhile.

Staff is going to have a Dolly remembrance gathering in a few days. There’s going to be pecan pie, so I might have to go.

Took my first iron tablet this morning. Had to steel myself for it.

The company I use (the guy I used to use fell off a roof and he quit sweeping) sends out a card to encourage people to get theirs cleaned early by offering a sale price. Tho even with the discount, ours was $$$ because 2 chimneys and a blower motor replacement. But we’re ready for winter, or will be when our pellets are delivered.

Yes, I read this as dildos…

Otis was being a pest so we took a walk - the long 1.25 mile trek around the block rather than the shorter ones down the cul-de-sacs and back. He was not on top of his game. He saw a squirrel and wanted to chase it, but I was quick enough to have a solid hold on the leash. A little farther down the road, there was a doe standing statue-still at the tree line. He didn’t notice her. I did, and I got a grip closer to his harness, lest he bolt and yank my arm out of the socket. But he was totally oblivious.

Supper will be veggie-beef-barley soup because I don’t feel like cooking and I had a sack in the freezer. We’ll probably have crackers on the side, too. And maybe some fresh pineapple chunks.

We’ve been working on eating better and FCD is being pretty diligent about keeping his own food diary. I used to do it for him, but that was dumb - this way, he’s got more awareness and control. The software isn’t the most user-friendly, but he’s figuring it out. Here’s hoping he stays on track. And me, too.

My tablet got weird last night - it wouldn’t restart or turn off or respond to anything. But my buddy Google helped me find the answer from Samsung - hold the power button and the volume down button together for 7 seconds, and it’ll reboot. And it did. And life is good. Whew! Because I just bought it last December - it’s way too soon for it to die.

Speaking of tablet, I think it’s calling me!!

I should’ve made my username Coppertone.
Church dinner was sloppy joes and cabbage in noodles.
Got US magazine so reading is on the agenda.
Oh, the man who has been feeding and water-providing the ferals is being threatened with eviction.
He found traps and threw them away.
I e mailed Housing and they said do not feed as they sit in the parking lot and could get run over
Plus
Its attracting racoons and skunks.

Howdy Y’all! Quality cee-mint pond did not happen as it clouded up and rained a bit this mornin’. It’s been pretty cloudy ever since with off and on rain showers. Thus we stayed inside and dry. We napped, day drank, and nuked and et supper for the day’s main ummm slothful activities.

MOOOOOOM I went to an audiologist for my hearin’ aids. I knew I needed 'em and figured that was the best way to go to find out about decent but not too expensive aids, cause I’m cheap thrifty like that. Otis looks so happy with his mommy!

Mollie I sent you a friend request over on the book of faces. We’ve had an armadillo in the back yahd before. Finally got rid of the critter.

Taters hope the eye appointment goes well.

JtC like BBBoo mine are rechargeable. I am glad for that cause I don’t like to fiddle with little fiddly things.

red I already said it, but YAY for gettin’ back in your own digs!

die I think “Identifiable Weirdo” would be good on a tshirt, resume, and business card.

HAR!

Possum on the half shell. :stuck_out_tongue:

I have to wonder if punching it down like you would after the first rising in homemade, then doing a second rising would salvage it?

I managed to get a few things done today. Sis did my grocery shopping for me and while she was out, I washed dishes and cleaned out the fridge. She dropped out the fridge cleanout to the trash for me. I got the pharmacy table sorted and swept the apartment this afternoon. I had to sit down between stand up chores, but I may have the energy to play around in the studio tonight.

FCMom, I don’t have a direct answer to your question about hearing aid, cheap vs. pricier, but I’ll throw this in. When you go to an audiologist, you’ll get your device tuned to your specific profile of hearing loss. I don’t know how you could get that from an OTC device. My aids, for example, take sounds from high ranges I can’t hear anymore, and give it to me at a lower pitch.

The audiologist I saw today brought up the dreaded phrase “cochlear implants.” She gave me a booklet about them. Years ago, I read that Rush Limbaugh got CI when he went deaf. At that time, they were saying CIs can’t reproduce music, and that’s very scary for me.

JtC, my aids are rechargable. I drop 'em in a charger every night.

Well I’ve finally made it through 177 posts. When you’re gone for a week, there’s a lot of catch up to do, at work and at home. So, I didn’t go on last week’s mmp on Sunday at all, only read about 4 posts on this week’s mmp on Monday, read about 20 on Tuesday, yesterday I read close to 50 and today I read more than 100. Whew; wipes brow.

So, here’s some comments on this week’s posts:

I agree with you; although I don’t have any jeans, I have 2 pair of gray slacks, one light gray, one dark gray, a pair of beige slacks, 2 pair of linen pants, one navy and one tan, several pair of hiking pants, purple and black.

I know what the W, T & F stand for, but the E, is it Everloving?

SAME!!!

Yay; that awesome!

There are elk between the pointer and the middle finger of the Mitten up near the fingernails. And there are some elk penned up in about 20-30 acres in Gaylord, MI.

Sticky Buns dramatic; I love it! Good idea to have that overgrown bush taken out. Are you going to put in flowers next year?

YAY!!! Glad you were able to make it home today and had the energy to get some tasks done. What a wonderful supportive sis you have.

Since my BF, who is a female and a friend, is GF, I knew what it meant. She came up to the cottage for 2 days last week and so I made Tuna Pasta Salad using GF Penne Rigate. She asked what she could bring and I told her GF graham crackers for s’mores and GF bread for toast with the omelette and for sandwiches.

Really? Well, I believe you. But I thought armadillos were in most SW states. I saw a number of them in TX.

Hubs had his right eye done 2 weeks ago and he has experienced a cloud in it. He had his left eye done yesterday and so far, so good.

Since I live in SE Mitten, there’s never total darkness, even when there’s a blackout. However, there was one time when we were up at Hubs’ sister’s cottage way up north and we went out on the dock and marveled at the stars and planets that we could see. I remember exactly when this was because our daughter was doing a Study Abroad in London in July 2005. On July 7 four Islamist suicide bombers detonated bombs on the subway trains and a bomb went off and hit a double-decker bus right outside the dorm she was staying in. Luckily her class had left on a field trip about an hour or so before.
I didn’t have the opportunity to really look at the nighttime sky when I was backpacking on the Appalachian Trail since thru-hikers midnight is at 9pm.

:notes: *If you like pina coldas…
and getting songs stuck in your brain…:notes:
Up from naptime(after Spot got cuddles and earwax), dinner tonight is jerk chicken with potatoes, and cauliflower with cumin, coriander, and lime.

Maybe

I’ve seen that movie.

Remember The Brickyard Preacher?

Justin Wilson reincarnated as an armadillo?

Then we’d nickname you SuntanLotion
But glad you got sloppy joes and reading materials.

You could get a nurse to force you to take it, but they charge a Fe.

I read it as that.

:slightly_smiling_face:
