I’m the exception to that rule. The regular kits are fine to me. Yeah, I could probably save a little money per meal doing my own spices vs using the packet. But the flavor is about right to start with for me. And I do like their sauce. Again as a starting point. I’ll often spice both up more for my personal consumption.
Here’s how hot I like things. I grow my own peppers to make hot sauce. Grew some Carribean Reds. 2-3 times hotter than habaneros. Purreed about 3 pints of them in enough vinegar to make a slurry. A bit bummed because that wasn’t going to be enough to give as Christmas gifts to everyone I wanted to.
Then I tasted the slurry :eek::eek::eek::eek:
Added a can of canned cherry pie filling :eek::eek::eek:
Another can :eek::eek:
A bottle of rice wine vinegar. Still at :eek: level
A pint of purreed garlic with vinegar. Okay now its just a tolerable level for me and one friend. Put some of that aside for us.
Still way too strong for everyone else. Dilute what is left in a 2 to 1 ratio with Tabasco Brand Habanero hot sauce. You know your shit is hot when you are using Habanero hot sauce to bring down the heat level. I ended up with a gallon of hot hot sauce.
With all my other hot sauce concoctions I probably have 10 gallons of the stuff in the house. Santa is giving away LOTS of hot sauce this year. In fact the Easter Bunny might make some secondary deliveries as well.
So, yeah, I like it hot
Again, to me the kits are okay. Its kinda like a taco bell taco or a fast food burger compared to something more upscale. It aint the same but it can be good for what it is.
Well, actually, I shouldn’t have the tacos from a kit at all. But every now and then, I have a craving. And I’ll pay for it later on.
And now I do want tacos. And chips and salsa. And an enchilada. And a margarita. It’s 10:21 now, if I left in 10 minutes I could be at Fiesta restaurant when it opens.
I completely agree. The only time I would make “real food” that needs these kinds of spices would be if I were cooking for a potluck or dinner party (aka, rarely) and full bottles of each would be a waste.
