Old geezers showing how it's done...Richard Thompson content.

RT on the BBC

I sincerely hope you keep posting stuff like this and the Bonamassa/Tull clip. Because I’m enjoying, utterly, everything you’re posting.

I’ve seen Richard Thompsom perform live twice. Awesome show, both times. The man is a musical god.

^^What she said.

Thanks!
Were you a Richard Thompson fan before?

I’ve also seen Richard Thompson live a couple of times and he’s amazing. I have a friend who is a really good guitar player and songwriter and he started playing guitar because of Thompson. He saw him perform live and went and bought a guitar the next day.

I came to post the exact same thing.

This, except for me it’s more like 7 or 8 times by now. I see him any chance I get. I love that I can go see him play in small venues and sit close enough to actually see what his hands are doing. The guy is mesmerizing.

I saw him in '98 or '99 (but definitely before the '99 release Mock Tudor).
He was playing a mixed solo set / duo set at Princeton. I wasn’t a Princeton student, I just saw a listing for the show and quickly borrowed a car and drove up from Philadelphia at the last minute to see it. The duo portions of the set were with Danny Thompson on upright bass. Richard Thompson played acoustic for the entire show- the solo segments and the duo segments.

I saw him again in 2007. He played electric and had a full band this time. It was an in-store performance at Amoeba Records in Hollywood for the release of Sweet Warrior.

This is great. I love me some Richard Thompson, and have seen him many times. A while back I posted a link here to a favorite show I attended with some comments…I still listen to that show occasionally.

Hearing Richard Thompson play “Vincent Black Lightning” in person is on my bucket list. The man is amazing and I hope to see him live one day.

I saw Richard Thompson do a solo acoustic show a few years ago and yes, he is amazing. I’ve been a fan since Shoot Out The Lights came out 30+ years ago. I had heard of Fairport Convention but wasn’t really familiar with their music. I hope to see him play electric guitar someday.

He’s also a really funny guy and I enjoyed his between-songs banter and the stories he told.

Thanks to OP River Hippie for turning me on to Richard Thompson.
Watching the BBC episode as I type and will definitely explore his talent further.

Speaking of Old Geezers…our minds sometimes take awhile to realize the obvious.
Fairport Convention.
Love it.

Gosh, this is embarrassing, but what song is playing over the montage (after the BBC guy’s intro)?

Love Richard Thompson. Oy, just swamped at work…

That’s House of Cards. Robert Plant did a nice version of this song on his Band Of Joy CD.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you lay down a groove. Put the 30 seconds at the beginning, where he’s playing by himself, on a loop and study, study, study. Yowza.

Oh, I am a happy bunny now!

I stumbled into Thompson from 1000 Years of Popular Music and raced out to see him in concert. I’m still catching up.

But what a body of work on which to catch up!

About the time of Amnesia we went to McCarter to see Roger McGuin who was touring with Richard. We’d never heard of him before, but we went right out and bought a bunch of CDs. He was amazing. Only have seen him with a band once, but that was amazing also.
Will watch the BBC show as soon as I get home. Thanks River Hippie!
