Anyone catch Richard Thompson's current tour?

And if so, what did you think of it?

And if your answer is anything but “Fuckin’ AWESOME!”, what reason do you have to get out of bed in the mornings?

Every time I see this guy, he’s a different person. Folk singer, leader of a 16th century cover band, hard rock artist.

The only problem I had with the concert was that he didn’t play You Can’t Win, easily his best song ever (yeah yeah, Al Bowlly’s In Heaven is OK). But his new Dad’s Gonna Kill Me ranks right up there.

And who’s his drummer? The guy is amazing.

I saw him in here in Santa Barbara in mid-March for the first time. My girlfriend bought the tickets before we met and ended up taking me. I had heard of him for years but never seen him. It probably wasn’t part of the tour though. It was just him solo in a small theater. It’s an annual Santa Barbara thing.

Anyway, the guy blew me away. He’s an incredible guitar player and really funny too. Why did I wait so long to finally see him?

He’s awesome solo, but this tour is very different. Very electric. His style reminds me a lot of David Gilmour, only far less catatonic.

I’ve seen him in his folk incarnations. Brilliant lyricist, but he can be very, very dark.

I’m kind of partial to “Wall of Death”.

I saw him in DC on 6/22. Amazing. A really good band, and I’m glad to see he didn’t hold back on the electric. Frankly I think he’s the best guitar player out there. Two hours, two encores, excellent new songs, lots of old classics. I really liked his Iraq song.

Didn’t the multi-instrument player look like they’d kidnapped him from some band camp?

ETA: An interview.

To me he looked like a middle aged woman.

Yes, I was in the cheap seats.

Dark? Naw.

I’ve got a wife, a kid, another on the way
I might get home if I can live through today
Before I came out here I never used to pray
Nobody loves me here
Nobody loves me here

Dad’s Gonna Kill Me

Dad’s in a bad mood, Dad’s got the blues
It’s someone else’s mess that I didn’t choose
At least we’re winning on the Fox Evening News
Nobody loves me here

Dad’s Gonna Kill Me
Dad’s Gonna Kill Me

I’ve managed to see Richard Thompson almost every time he made it down here to Houston.

As a solo acoustic artist, he’s wonderful.

With a band, he’s even better.
