(Old) Gunpowder, Treason and Plot in the MMP

I’ve loved his stories ever since I first read Men, Martians and Machines, back in grade school. I have a copy of Major Ingredients, a 700-page collection of short stories by him, but I don’t think “Into Your Tent I’ll Creep” is one of them. Looking at Amazon I see that it’s included in The Best of Eric Frank Russell.

Which ones are yours?

What do you get when you cross pies of Paris with a cottage pie? I don’t know either, but whatever it is we’re having it for supper tonight.

I cleaned, dusted, and vacuumed. I cleaned Spot’s box, took out the trash and recycling, and changed the sheets. I did 2 loads of laundry. I watched the Panthers forget how to football. It was in the mid 70s, so I had the windows open all afternoon. Of course tomorrow the high is supposed to be 51, and there’s a freeze warming for Monday night/early Tuesday. Welcome to N.C. Time for poke loin, sweet **N.O.T.**s, and a Wisconsin Old Fashioned, with a side of hockey.

I read this as uptight fuchsias. Like, them plants need to chill out.
Sorry about the bike misadventures.

< crushed swampy’s clutching pearls in a fit of apoplexy >

The Rich People’s Aldi has self checkouts, I go to the Poor People’s Aldi, which doesn’t. My Harris Teeter has armed guards(and locking wheels on the shopping carts).

:open_mouth:
{{{{susan and wife }}}}

She looks very fetching.

Well, we won’t Hector you about them.

It’d be more like miraculous since they’ll be about 200’ apart! :open_mouth:

If you subscribe to YouTubeTV, you should have gotten this in email:

> In light of the disruption, we’re offering our subscribers a $20 credit.

> Over the next few days, you will receive a follow-up email with instructions on how to redeem your $20 credit for YouTube TV. Once redeemed, this will be applied to your next bill.

Which leads me to wonder - why don’t they just credit my account? Or are they hoping people won’t pay attention and won’t do whatever it is they have to do to get the $20?? Or is that cynical of me?

Spud soup was very yum. Otis needs a chill pill.

Earlier this afternoon, I was throwing a ball for him from the living room to the den - maybe all of 25’ or so. He got excited, I guess. Came charging back and leapt into my recliner on top of me. Nothing like 60# of drooling hairyness landing in your lap!

He’s a character, he is.

Time for chillage.

Next time I’m excited about an “early out” shift, come over & smack some sense into me.

Guess who’s closing?

I’ve learned that when S.M. comes over with a big smile and a soft voice … it’s absolutely never required, and hey, I guess a few extra bucks.

Oh, and earlier it was SNOWING SIDEWAYS full lake effect. :snowflake: So pretty.

Final War Requiem in the books. No dropping things in the audience today, and fewer coughs (both nights somebody was obviously surpressing a cough during and after the final chorale, which must have been uncomfortable, but much appreciated.

Currently 31 Freedom Degrees here. Tomorrow’s high is 39. Friday’s is 75. Go home, nature, you’re drunk.

Off to celebrate the oldest nephew’s birthday. He is officially a teenager.

When you get them used to wearing outerwear as pups, they tend to be good with it.

Locking wheels are pretty much de rigueur at most of the grocery stores around here. The dollar stores just put a really long pole on them that won’t go through the door.

Better thee than me.

Towels are laundered and put away. Otherwise, it’s been a slow day.

THUNDER!!! Too weird! At first, we couldn’t figure out what it was. Mother Nature is definitely off-kilter.

Pretty doggie sweater!

Them Ducks like to kick into gear at the last minute. Sometimes, it even works!

Howdy Y’all! I verged and all went well. We et stoner food and accomplished nappage. Oh, and the biiiiiig trash can has been hauled all the way down to the road for pickup tomorrow. Thus is the news from swampland. I am sleepified, so bedtime will be shortly.

Hey everyone, I didn’t get arrested today, which was nice. The crowd is smaller now, some of us got scared away which is understandable.

I also finished baking cookies before I left. Cookies have been boxed and bagged for delivery and mailing tomorrow. While I was cleaning the kitchen (powdered sugar just gets everywhere!), I moved the kitchen island so I could mop under it. George does NOT like it when I move things around and whined at Hubs until he fixed it.

Shower had been taken and now I’m just hanging out with you folks.

Yep, it was in the high 60’s yesterday and should start snowing tonight.

I’m very jealous of shoe’s sideways snow, I’m also loving living somewhere with four seasons.

Yes. Same with rebates, they look good but most folks just do not bother with them or follow the complicated instructions to the letter.

Never doubt Mother Nature. 200 ft is nothing to bees.

She looks adorable as always!

I’m so glad you are recovering, it sounded like not a lot of fun.

I am so happy that your car is safe enough to drive home, its great that nothing major got broken.

That sounds like a wonderful time, its good that you are feeling well enough to enjoy it!

… and perhaps live to regret it.

That’s a wonderfully kind offer. Keep an eye on your PMs.

I hate the heat, but uuurrrgghhh. Snow is not my thing. Since it’s yours, enjoy every moment with it!

It is a long time to stand around, talking about the weather or otherwise. I mostly soothe and coach. He gets an extended rubdown, lots of praise and plenty of treats afterward. I also brush his teeth to kill a little time, but he’s used to that. Doesn’t like it, but since I don’t like the vet bills for pets with bad teeth, he loses that disagreement. I can report now after 3 bath sessions, he is doing so much better with the itching!

taters, have fun with the new bikes!

oopsie, thanks for checking in! I’m glad everything went as well as it did. You’ve really made the best of a rotten situation. I hope the rest of the trip is full of better memories and no further unpleasant incidents.

Boo fae, your party sounds like it was such fun! How cool about your friend group and how you treat each other so well. Those kinds of gatherings are just the best.

lily, I don’t think I want to know the employer who treated you so poorly, but it is upsetting to learn there are such in our area. I’m sorry you and your dear spouse are dealing with the health issues you described. I hope everything goes as you need it to with the tamoxifen. What an ordeal you’ve been through.

Van go, Peach is darling in her purple sweater. Those ears just kill me, too. Glad doggie school is going so well!

Smart ass. Well, Atticus Sappington, for sure. I’ll take our QB, Dante Moore, while I’m at it. To hell with it – they’re mine, all mine!

A perfect description, sadly.

You are so good, in every meaning of the word. I hope GG soon recovers his equilibrium from being disturbed over furniture moving.

Ollie is the same. I broke out my Big Chief smoker a few weeks ago to smoke some salmon, positioned it on the cement pad outside the workshop where it lives. Took Ollie out for a potty break, he spotted the smoker and barked his silly head off. I even tried to lead him over to it so he could investigate for himself, but he was having none of it. I had to pick him up and physically carry him adjacent to the smoker before he settled down. Even after the “introduction,” he gave it the stink eye for the rest of the day until I was done with it and put it away.

Idiot.

Powdered sugar… sounds like you made Russian tea cakes/Mexican wedding cakes, am I right? Everyone will love them!

I spent another pleasant day with friends who made delicious clam chowder for lunch. We took a nice walk, shared wine, conversation, laughs and let the dogs run themselves ragged. It was great.

Not much else going on here today and I’m happy with that. Catch you all soon in the next MMP!

I checked my irk email. I have a $25 Amazon gift certificate for securing new data. I thanked the sender… and copied La Jefa. :stuck_out_tongue:

You are such a good detective, Encyclopedia Brown would be very proud

Russian tea cakes and chocolate crinkle cookies. If I’m going to mess the kitchen up, I’m going to do it right!

The interwebs suggested rolling the cookies in regular sugar before the powdered sugar to stop it from melting. Sometimes the interwebs know what they are talking about, it worked great.

There are also sugar cookies, ginger snaps and jam sandwiches. Someone gave me a box of pawpaws last month and I made jam out of most of them. We don’t eat jam often so using it for jam sandwiches worked out nicely except for the part that I’m afraid to mail jam sandwiches for fear of spoilage.

Thank you for your kind words but I’m actually having very mean thoughts about the cookie boxes. Two of the rooms have trump support stickers and I really do NOT want to go into those rooms and visit the residents. I’m probably going to leave those boxes at the desk for one of the staff to deliver. I’m a weenie, so I won’t say why. Nobody will ever know but me and now the teeming millions.

You never know what’s going to turn out to be a dog eating monster, especially when it comes to meat cooking things. Weener dogs have reason to be a little nervous around them!

GG has recovered from the moving island trauma and is now dealing with new sheets on the bed. One of our bottom sheets was starting to get those little tears that comes with age and use. I repaired them but also know that once fabric starts falling apart like that (bought them in 2018, not bad) it keeps going, so I pulled a new set out of the box and washed them yesterday.

They are on the bed now and they feel and smell different from our other sheets so he’s in there touching everything.

I’m so glad you had a good day with friends. It seems as though your life hasn’t had many laughs recently what with Ollie trying to eat himself and your pipes trying to bankrupt you.

That’s just funny! I hope it gives her pause for thought.

Oh, swampy, happy cake day! I’m so sorry I didn’t see it earlier things of that importance should never be missed.

It won’t. But if she congratulates me and copies the rest of the staff, it will make Wednesdays announcement awkward. :joy:

That doesn’t make you mean. It makes you sane.

I should think your jam sandwiches would fare just fine in the post. Sugar is the preservative in jam, so unless you used a low-sugar recipe when you made the paw paw jam, they should be fine. Just remember doggio’s UPS motto: It’s only breakable once! So maybe don’t send them UPS.

Poor GG! So many new challenges in his life!

Re my good day with friends, yes, it’s nice to get back to some semblance of normalcy. I don’t remember having such a sucky summer, ever. But it’s all done and over with now. Even the wasp stings have healed, finally. Time to get on with better things and try to regain a sense of humor. Now, where did I leave that again…?

Thanks as ever for your sweet and caring thoughts.

9pm and time for the late-night final. Did spend time at the gym, but tried to shorten my exercise periods and added more breaks between the sweating. With soccer done I have very few outlets for burning calories but I am going to try and moderate my workload.

Dinner at Golden Corral was good and ate way too much which is why I only go there every couple of months. Have had the evening sammich and mini-apple pie so both calories and sugar have been replaced. Have a Drs. appointment to get my prescriptions refilled (guess he doesn;t like to do them automatically) and might have a question or two for him (nothing serious). Outside of that the week looks kind of bare with no soccer to practice or referee.

And now to do the 12 hour catch-up…

FCM, yeah, I really have to go through my computer room, I have a table with various soccer things that really need to be examined and put in some type of order…one of these days… No telling what I will find there.

Oopsie, sounds like it was a bit of a slog for car and keyboard, but looks like things will work out for you. Have a safe trip home. There was a wolf preserve out near Rapid City when I visited there several years ago, and one of these days I am going to go back to see it. Enjoy the family time.

red, hope the diving paperwork goes smoothly for you. I was done with my new car in about 6 minutes at our place.

boo fae, thanks for the advice, I have spent almost all my time on either the treadmill or the cycles, probably need to get the weights in there too, and like you say, 3-4 times a week and work on different parts of the body. Sounds like a good group of people and a good time this weekend.

Coppertone, that was generous of your neighbor, but also pretty stupid. Hope you and the other parishioners don’t get infected.

lily , glad you two are OK (for now) and appendages crossed that no side effects will manifest themselves…

VanGo, thanks for the pic, Ms. Peach appears dubious about the garment…

Herald, I have a paperback copy of Men, Martians and Machines so now I guess I’ll have to go find it and read it again.

Pie R Squared?

shoe, ah, the dreaded ‘shoe, can you do us a bigggg favor tonight?’ option.

JtC, glad you weren’t arrested, and hooray for the cookies!

And that’s all the energy I have left. Going out to watch a little of the tackleball game and work on the NY Times puzzles and crosswords for a bit before bedtime. Catch y’all on the next MMP.

I talked to Sis this evening. I’ll call the PCP tomorrow for an appointment. She agreed with me that I likely e. Coli. This has hung on too long to be the antibiotics. It really kicked off when I opened a bag of spinach for salad. You try to eat healthy and this is what you get. Cocoa Puffs wouldn’t have done me this way.

{ opens bag of FunYuns }

What, totally a vegetable! It’s like, onions!

Almost ezzactly word for word.

If she wasn’t so good to me, I might’ve said no fucking way in hell, bitch, but she - and the rest of management there - genuinely treat me well.
