Old habits dying hard (...)

I’m one of the lucky guys who can drink gallons of coffee or go completely without, it doesn’t make any difference. I don’t get any kind of caffeine buzz when I drink it or withdrawal when I don’t. So whenever I feel like it, I make a pot of iced coffee and keep it in the fridge to drink at will. But I do have high blood pressure, so can’t drink too much.

Tomatoes are on my “don’t eat” list because of my kidney disease. But I’m very good at minimizing sodium and potassium, so I allow myself to cheat a little with the tomatoes.

LL Bean has a great braided belt (49.95) in two shades of brown. One of my relatives gets a replacement every 7-10 years for Christmas.

Gave up smoking and drinking back in January 2019. Smoked about a pack a day and probably drank a six pack every night.

Had a stroke, so I had to give up the smoking. I figured beer and smokes went hand in and hand for me, so I gave up the beer as well.

I still miss both at time, but I’m glad I’m saving around $400 a month.

What amazes me is that you can make a braided belt without cutting the ends. Skip to step 3 here. Bracelets are more common as it’s tedious for something as long a a belt.

Witch!

Amazing!!!

A discussion I had with my wife over the weekend reminded me of another one of mine: since around 1988, my primary winter jacket has been a leather bomber jacket.

I’ve had four such jackets – I get about 8 or 9 years out of one before it begins to wear out (the cuffs and the bottom fray, etc.) They aren’t as easy to find now as they used to be, and the one that I have now, I had to order online. But, it, too, is now ready for retirement, and I will need to buy another one (probably from that same online store) before the cold weather hits.

Good one! Same here, except I bought my first one just after 2000 so I’ve had fewer than you, and the one I have now is probably in worse shape than yours.

A similar case could be made for footwear, although it might have to be limited to something like a sturdy pair of old boots.

I started wearing bomber jackets back in the '70s, and have lost track of how many I’ve bought. I still have the last one somewhere, though I haven’t worn it in years.

And why is it impossible to throw out old t-shirts?

I think I’m addicted to Clamato juice. Every time I go food shopping I pick up a few bottles of it, and one of them is gone before I get home.

(even though I’m supposed to minimize tomato products and sodium)

I also have wishes for keyboards that don’t exist. And although reassigning keys helps somewhat, it can’t do everything I want with the software I use.

Also I often envision a specific thing, like, say, a plain white t-shirt with a round neck (preferably capped) and capped sleeves, and the slight waist cinching you get with t-shirts designed for women. Oh, and it has to be thickish t-shirt fabric, not the very see-through material that’s common (via different materials) in both cheap and expensive brands, because it makes my bra far too visible and also just doesn’t look as good.

I don’t think it exists, despite all the basic ingredients being obvious. I have various white t-shirts that are similar, but they’re all not quite right.

Anyway… More in line with the OP, the other day I went out in a short red dress with small flowers, a denim jacket, leggings and black DM-style boots. It was exactly what I would have worn to go out 28 years ago. My haircut is also unchanged, mainly because it’s all that works for me, but it does work for me, so I’m lucky there. Basically, it’s what I’m comfortable with; it’s dressy enough, not too dressy, girly but not too girly, and physically comfortable too.

The extra luck is that this look is currently very fashionable. I don’t look like current students, current students look like me.

Speaking of haircuts,

Except for Covid, mine hasn’t changed since the '70s. Yeah, it works for me.

Yeah, haircuts. That’s a good example and one I can relate to. I kept my hair long until about 30 years of age and tried again for a few months about five or six years ago. I went to several barbers, telling them that I liked the 70s look, but none of them got it right and one even refused (damn kids these days, ha-ha). I eventually gave up because it became unreasonable. Short is much more convenient and women tell me it looks better.

I feel your pain. This is why I never buy anything.

Pontooning!

I sold our pontoon boat (it was my third) last month. This summer has been all about kayaking, and I haven’t missed burning $60 of gasoline putt-putting on the river. Last night my gf asked if I had any serious offers out on boats. She thought I was actively shopping. She really misses pontooning.

I had to give up coffee for a couple of days and felt exactly like I had the flu. I felt I was walking underwater, screaming headache. It’s better to taper off. From two mugs a day to one for a week. Then half a mug a day for a week. Then…etc. Caffeine withdrawal is no fun.

I think the trick is not to think about what you want, but rather, just look at what you can actually have

Potato chips are my main, go-to for salty, delicious foods. I used to snack on them while watching TV, but have given up eating in between meals a few years ago. I eat them now as more of a side dish with a meal. I discovered Lays Natural Thick Cut Sea Salt Natural potato chips about 7 or 8 years ago. They were the absolute BEST. They were salty, large pieces, lightly colored - everything that makes a chip perfect. Then they suddenly disappeared from my local grocery store and appeared at Walmart. Then they disappeared from Walmart and showed up at Target. This went on for a few years. I’d find them and then lose them. When I’d find them I’d buy multiple bags to keep on hand. Now they have totally disappeared. I’ve tried to find a substitute but nothing compares. Regular Lays are always small or folded up. (I hate folded chips) Walmart’s store brand chips are pretty good, but still not like my beloved. I am surviving, but not happily.

I did find them on Amazon: 6 - 8.5 oz bags for $49.99 + $11.06 shipping

I had a very similar experience to the OP’s with braided belts. I’d been wearing one since the 1990s. When my old one broke I looked for another one, just because that’s what I always wore, and I just figured I should replace like with like. Like the OP, I looked for one at a couple of stores (though not as many as he did), couldn’t find one, and realized they had gone out of fashion, and bought a regular belt.

Also, I washed my face with Clearasil Daily Face Wash since at least college, or maybe even high school. And I just kept using it into adulthood, just because it was what I always used, even though I probably didn’t actually need a facial cleanser with acne medication anymore. Then a few years ago they discontinued it. Regular soap makes my face feel too dry, and I can’t stand the exfoliating beads that are in so many face cleaners nowadays, so I ended up trying several products before I settled on Target’s store brand product that’s essentially a knock off of Neutrogena facial soap.
