(Old) Hello, Mr Sandman - Dreaming in the MMP

Just finished dinner (and it’s not even 18:00 yet).

We had dry salami from The Chef’s Store (similar, but IMO not quite as good as the Gallo we grew up with – it has the white ‘wrapper’, anyway), and three cheeses fromTrader Joe’s: Cotswold Double Gloucester (with onions and chives), Triple Creme Brie, and Bacon Cheddar. With Charles Shaw Cabernet Sauvignon (aka ‘cheap plonk’).

I was on the Slides again today, it wasn’t too bad. The damages weren’t too bad either, but lots of overgoods. Including several (new, unused)body bags. It rained on me as I left, which wasn’t an issues, since I was hitting the shower first thing(after I gave the S.E.G. his attention). I napped. Spot napped by my head for a bit. Which is when i dreamed I was being chased by a Komodo dragon around my old durham home, then was being chased by a Frost Giant at the foundry at work. He also sneezed on my head. Dinner tonight is chicken with egg noodles, with peas and 'shrooms. And a martini.

Grandma was very Polish, and cooked Polish foods. Mom? Not so much.

I like the little sign, it gives off a Hitchhiker’s Guide To the Galaxy vibe:
The Forest Moon of Endor is a delightful place, if you like trees and huggable teddy bear like natives, who tend to eat your liver with the local version of fava beans and a nice Chianti.

I’m a littel hazy on my full family tree, apart from it being German/Irish/Polish/English and Catholic. But I’ve had so many Jewish friends that I use 90% more Yiddish than the average goyim.

And Maggie Wonder beagle once cronched so many cubes she gave herself an ice cream headache, and was running around growling.

Priories. Gotta keep the haints away.

This

Awwwwwww…

I don’t know that they made it that far west, they were a Pennsylvania Dutch thing and I don’t remember seeing them west of Virginia and Kentucky. Mom had pictures of her grandfather’s barn after he painted his barn and hex signs (Pennsylvania Dutch and German here) which is how I knew what they were when I first saw them.

Of course, most of my experience of the states further west are the interstates and as we all know, the interstates are not a good representation of the actually states traveled through.

How many Nelson toys did you find under the fridge?

Dad was a grade-checker and spent his life building interstates. Once he retired he loved it when we hit construction so he could see what new grade checkers did and their tools.

Go you! The biggest thing you-tube taught me is that plumbing isn’t nearly as complicated as it looks…as long as you have the right tools.

We used to drain our water heater around the first of the year but it got pushed back until April this year. I’m not even sure that we need to do it yearly here, the water was sooo hard in AZ and we don’t get nearly the calcium build up in the sinks here. Habit and traditions will probably win.

Of course, it is much easier when gas isn’t involved. Is your water heater in your house? Ours have always been electric and in a cabinet on the outside of our home. Our current one is in the attached storage room which is even more inconvenient because we have to go out the back door, down some concrete stairs, then up another couple of concrete steps to get into the storage room. Of course the fuse box is out there as well.

So now there will always be a rug there, right?

It sounds like love has happened and I am so happy for you.

You have just made me realize that I haven’t seen any haint blue porch ceilings since leaving AZ. How weird is that?

The water heater is in the garage. It is drained, and much of the discoloration flushed, so now I’ll see if I can return it to its functions.

:crossed_fingers:

“[Album] imgur .com” – you linked to the album the picture is in, not to the picture. Here’s the picture:

Welcome home, Peach! [said in my most joyous, confident, hallelujah night nurse voice] I haz a happy for you, as our shoe would say.

who adopted who?

This word picture made me smile out loud! Thank you.

I still feel bad about how cranky I was about that. Please know how much I appreciate you’ all being so kind about that foot of mine in my mouth. Please accept my apologies.

Now I know what to call my porch ceiling color. It’s the only color I see porch ceilings around here and I always wondered why.

Now I feel badly about bringing it up again. I thought it was an excellent reminder and used it to explain my ignorance about my personal drive through states.

I haven’t seen a hex sign on the interstate in WV either.

Please don’t apologize for that, we all tend to forget that driving through/flying over something isn’t the same as experiencing things.

I was brought up thinking that it was racist but I’ve also heard that it confuses wasps into thinking the ceiling is the sky so they don’t nest. Do you get wasp nests on your porch?

The fridge is part of the apartment so maintenance will find out. :stuck_out_tongue:

The internet has lied to me–shocking, I know. I consulted many sources before picking up my flathead screwdriver. I followed instructions online and have gotten to a point in draining/flushing the gas water heater beyond which I can’t get. Specifically, I read “then turn the gas back on–the pilot will still be lit even if you used the OFF position.” This doesn’t seem to be true, or at least, I don’t see a pilot light. The instructions on the outside of the tank are complex and appear to involve the risk of blowing ourselves up, and we can’t find the manual online. We imagine that a person who knows how to do this will laugh at us and get us hot water again. We have some calls out for plumbers or handy-dykes.

Also, I drained and flushed the tank until the water was pretty clear, but the water out of the hot taps is brownish at the moment–we assume the remaining sediment will settle back down.

I thought it was a good idea to do this myself why? Some studly fantasy?

I just parked Peach in her crate, and she’s now making the first sounds I’ve heard from her. Little squeaks. She hasn’t barked at anything, not even the neighbor dog barking.

No so far in the 40+ years of living in the land of haint blue porch ceilings.

Been about 20 messages in the last 5 hours, so time for the late night final. Have done little if anything outside of fixing myself a Chee-Burger, have done some soccer reseach and got a few e-mails out, so I guess that was constructive. Off to bed here shortly as 11pm closes in.

Now what has everyone been talking about…

red, remind me again what day you depart…has to be very close. And how is Nelson doing with all the hubbub?

flyboy, you are more persistant than I when it comes to getting burn residue cleaned up.

lily, hope the water heater cleanout has ended well.

Sensei, unlike some of us RDOS, you have a busy life with family, so just post when you can. And helping the family of a dying friend takes precedent anytime. All the best.

VanGo, looks like you two are going to be best friends. I am happy for you.

JtC, I have gas heat too, and the heater is in my garage, but back away from the garage door so it would be a bit of a project to drain it. Probably would hire a professional (and I see that might be the end result anyway).

And 11pm has passed, so need to take the late-night antibiotic pill and head off to Slumberland. Take care all.

Oh shit. How selfish of me. In my horn-tooting my milestones, I completely ignored Bob. It’s his birthday/gotcha day too - or it was on the 8th. He’s officially 7 years old, I think. He’s a handsome boy.

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave.

:champagne:  :birthday_cake:HAPPYbelated GOTCHA DAY BOB!!!:birthday_cake:  :champagne:

Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 19c/67f with a predicted high of 26c/78f and partly cloudy. Weather app says “Taint that good, taint that fucking bad. See what I fucking did there?” Well, it’s not that bad outside, there’s some sun and a bit of cloud with a light breeze.

What’s a senior centre? I’m not sure we have them over here - what does it offer you? Glad to hear there’s a dog park too, Nelson might make some new friends there

Shame about the delays, and the long day, but uneventful is my favourite kind of flight.

It’s a nice idea, but in your position, I wouldn’t be going either. Bad weather and a lack of people I actually want to talk to? Nope, I’d be staying at home with Bailey!

Happy Gotcha Day, Peach! I hope you have many years of happiness together! She is a beauty.

Ours is not a particularly unsafe area, so I could probably leave the smaller windows open at the front of the house. I need to find the keys so I can lock the larger windows and then I’d be happier. Our house was burgled many years ago, I’ve just been very wary ever since then.

The super-secret meeting got moved to yesterday afternoon so I didn’t miss out at all. Turns out that recent events in the College meant that it was necessary to move some staff around (with their agreement) so one of admins from the History team is moving (to my old dept) and we are having a new hire to replace him. The new person is only a 0.8FTE so four days a week, which means the rest of us may need to provide some extra support for History if they struggle to cope with the loss of 7hrs a week.

Happy Gotcha Day, Bob! He is indeed a very handsome boy.

Yesterday was very hot at work, and I was glad to get out of the office at the end of the day. Came home via a series of delayed trains, and opened as many windows in the house to get some air through. I had a couple of hours at home, tended to the needs of mogs, had some dinner and then went to the pub with my friends. We sat outside for the rest of the evening which was very pleasant after being so hot all day.

Today is a strike day so I had a lie-in until 7.30am, then got up to feed the cats and do the rounds of litter trays, biscuit bowls and water bowls. I’ve had breakfast and a cup of tea so now it’s time to get to the gym. After that, I’m getting the car washed, then coming home to wash me before heading out again for a couple of errands. I should also be able to pick up lunch from the nice Indian food truck in town which will be a treat for me. Afternoon’s my own for some slothing, and I’ll be off to collect ‘im indoors from the station later.

{{{sensei}}}

VanGo, congratulations on your new roommate! Sooooo cute!!!

{{{Pilot and BB}}}

Enjoy your slothing, BooFae!

J-Bats, such a cute pup!!!

In other news: BEEP

BEEP

BEEP

There is apparently a smoke detector upstairs that needs the batteries replaced. I found one and took the battery out for now and DAMN IT, that wasn’t the one that was beeping. I have no clue where the other one is that is BEEEP BEEEEEEEEPING now. I’ll have to go back upstairs before school starts and find it. But for now, I’m sitting with a BEEEP poodle BEEEP on my lap. BEEEEEEEP

SUCCESS! The beep has been silenced.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 76 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 90 and sunny for a while, then cloudy again. We will be bears who breakfast this mornin’ at Pearly’s. Afterwards we will go on a ramble. Not sure where that may take us, but I won’t be drivin’ so I get to take in the countryside and enjoy.

JtC there are no hex barns here but plenty of front porches, especially on old farm houses, painted haint blue. The porch ceilin’ and floor of the house I grew up in were painted haint blue.

Sensei check in as you are able. You’ve got enough goin’ on right now, so don’t worry about this place.

VanGo sounds like Peach has begun your trainin’.

Sticky_Buns glad you found the source of the BEEP.

Lily brave of you. I have drained a hot water heater before, but it was electric and somewhat less complicated. Now, I am inclined to pay someone to do that.

J-Bats happy gotcha day to Bob!

BooFae strike slothin’ sounds like a good plan to me.

Now I need more caffeine and then purtification must commence. The great unwashed have come to expect my impeccable hygiene.

Happy Thursday Y’all!
