Old horror movie a friend asked me about...

I’m an Old Horror Film buff so a friend asked me about this…

Some people live in a house where little monster elflike things live in the fireplace. They end up dragging the people into the fireplace.

Anyone have any ideas? I’m stumped. I’m waiting for her to get back with me about if it was color or B&W.

Sounds like it could be Don’t Be Afraid of The Dark.

I just sent her that message. She hasn’t responded yet, but I think we have a winner.

That’s almost certainly it- but wasn’t that a made-for-TV movie in the Seventies?

I think it was, yeah. I was only 3 when it was made, so I saw it many years later, almost certainly on VHS. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people saw it and had no idea it was made-for-tv.

That’s funny, I just read an essay today about that movie (it’s in an anthology of horror film essays that my husband just put out.) I thought it was funny that I’d never heard of it.

That’s a classic. The creatures when finally revealed are utterly hideous.

It could even be The Boogens.

Good grief. I knew it the instance I read it and was still too late. Curses! Foiled again.

I used to have this big book of horror movie monsters, and this was the only movie description I found really scary

Oh, man! I think I saw that one on cable about 30 years ago. The monsters looked like Muppet turtles!

Yup, that’s the one. It’s actually a decent quality early-80s slasher movie with an entertaining plot (monsters get released through underground tunnels when they re-open an abandoned silver mine in Utah!) and good actors. The opening credits are in the style of a Ken Burns documentary, except that this movie came first.
