ID this flick: Little monsters in house afraid of light, live in fireplace (maybe)

I saw this flick on TV as a kid, scared me half to death.

Couple move into a house, and a fireplace or something like that is walled up. The guy breaks through it, which I guess frees the little monsters that live in the walls. They may have been monkey-faced somewhat, not sure.

In the end they are dragging the woman across the floor in the dark, and she gets a hold of a camera and starts taking pictures to freak out the monsters with the flashes. I don’t remember if she gets away or not.

Ring any bells? I’d like to look it up on IMDB.com, maybe even buy it if it’s on DVD.

Good GOD, I remember that too. It scared the bejeebers out of me. I must have seen it in ~1976. We lived in this big old Victorian with huge grates for heat, I was afraid to walk anywhere near them as I thought they were going to come at me.

Around 1976 sounds about right. I may have seen it later in the early 80’s.

If it was a made for TV movie, it was likely Don’t be Afraid of the Dark.

Other than that, I’m clueless.

That’s probably it, thanks grendel! I almost wrote in the OP that I thought it was made for TV, but decided against it.

Looks like there’s going to be a theatrical remake:

Every horror remake I’ve seen sucks, so I have no almost hope for this.

I recently tracked down a copy of this movie on tape. It is no where nearly as scary as it was when I was a kid. The only thing frightening about it is the 70s clothes and hairstyles.

It definitely is Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.

This movie scared the hell out me when I was 8 years old but, as Wicked Blue observes, it looks pretty cheesy to grown-up eyes,

Pretty much no movie scares me anymore, but I’d still like to see this one again for nostalgia’s sake.

Revtim, send me an email at the addy in my profile, and I’ll see what I can do about lending you my copy.

That had Jim Hutton, didn’t it? What I found scary about it as a boy was that the little twisted creatures didn’t just want to kill you, they wanted to turn you into one of them and you’d have to be that way forever. The woman doesn’t get away, Jim Hutton is too late to save her, and at the end, the house is shut up and abandoned, but you hear the creatures’ voices, including the woman’s now, talking about how eventually somebody will come to the house and they’ll be able to get them…

Wicked Blue, that’s extremely kind of you! But I don’t want to see it so much to bother anyone with mailing and postage and such. Plus, what with a remake being made, it seems very likely that it will be on TV again very soon. Thanks though!
