I decided to get my pot of chili going today instead of tomorrow. It’s simmering on the stove as I write, and will be relegated to the refrigerator later today to think about its sins for a day. I may have put a bit too much heat in it, but perhaps it will mellow with age. Also, when I was grabbing cans of black beans at the store, a can of kidney beans snuck in there, so the fat bastards are now part of the mix. ::shakes fist at the minimum wage stockers:: Also, I was wrong about this stew needed extra liquid. The canned beans and tomatoes provide plenty.
It decided to drop down to around freezing today, but the ground wasn’t frozen too hard to do some gardening anyway. I have loads of plants which have been hanging round getting bored in pots and I needed to dig an extra bed out for them (so they can hang around in bed, which is preferred this time of year).
I need to put up a fence as well, which is a bigger job- I have all the kit, including these big spike things to hammer into the ground, which is fine, but they’re really long and I’m not sure where all the utilities are. I’ve managed to get confirmation that there’s no gas pipes under the garden (the house isn’t connected to the gas, but next door both sides are, so I knew it was around). I think I know where the internet cable is having already nearly cut it in half cos it was about 10cm deep, but the electric and water pipes are still unclear… I could try carefully dig to check, but that probably would make the fence less stable.
I was on the 200 Slide again, except when I was loading. Then there was The NoodleHot Sauce Incident. A bottle of hot sauce go broken, and by “bottle” I mean “55 gallon Costco drum”. The hazmat guy took care of the sauce, but I had 6 carts of stuff to rebox(including 2 sofas). So I was there till noon. Temp was 37 when I left, and windy. Brrr.
Muph showed up. Between 8 and 10 I dropped off some graphics at a shop so they could sew a piece of fabric on to serve as a hinge, got to the museum and did standard opening chores, one exhibit had decided that its timer wasn’t any good anymore, so I had to dig in its guts and do a replacement. I installed a new set of doors on the reef tank, then my boss brought out the graphic panels for them, too big. Installed anyway. An exhibit that we have in cooperation with the Lab of O had its license expire today, and the Lab of O is off until Jan 5. The new lamp for the projector on another exhibit again failed to arrive, and yet another exhibit that just went on the floor needs to have some software installed, but the dud who set it up is out and he didn’t leave the admin password. And finally, the shop that sewed on the fabric hinges used the wrong color thread and did a kind of shitty job. So Yeah, Murphy was hard at work.
Howdy Y’all! I did the thing and was happy to spend the rest of the day in da warm cave. Much sloth ensued until it was time to fix sup. After that, well, sloth continues to ensue. Tomorrow will be busy for us, as prep for the NYD feast will consume time. OYKW will make his famous cheesecake and then I will get bzzy. Lily has inspired me, so we will have breakfast for sup with waffles and bacon.
Just had some drinks with my sister, where she updated me on her ongoing divorce saga. In addition to refusing to move out, he also seems to be refusing to acknowledge service of the divorce filing (which she did by mail), which means she’ll probably have to follow up with certified mail, which he’ll probably refuse to pick up, so she’ll have to get the sheriff involved. Because he is deeply invested in making things as difficult as possible.
Evening all. Spent most of the afternoon at the gym exercising or reading, sometimes both at once, and have finished my Mac-n-Cheese dinner. Tomorrow is banking, shopping and gassing up the car for the morning duties and a ‘we’ll see’ afternoon (gym is closing at 4pm tomorrow and Thursday, so don’t know if I’ll make it there or not). A little bit warmer today but down below freezing again and will wake up to about 25F.
Got all the soccer parents contacted, coaching three teams (U8, U10 and U12, I can manage that since they all will play at different times) and probably referee a game or two this weekend. Got rain due Firday night but the rest of the time it should be dry outside.
Coppertone, good to hear the health report is positive. Hopefully you got all your outside stuff done today as 7" of snow does not sound promising for getting around tomorrow…
Cookie, happy chillin’, whatever ends up in there…
Nut, hope someone can advise you about the utilities, would be a bad thing to rupture something.
Anything from 5 Guys will brighten my day…
doggio, I understood that reference. Sounds like it was a wee bit messy…
And now I have learned something new this week…thank you.
VanGo, sorry I even mentioned it, hope I didn’t Jinx you, I’m sure it will work itself out..eventually…
Waffles and bacon…hmmmmm
Pavo, sounds like soon-to-be-divorced husband is a real anal cavity. Hope he finally recognizes reality, even if the sherrif has to explain it to him.
I thought we would have leftover prime rib for dinner. I was planning to have mine in a salad. But The Spousal Unit took us down the beach instead. We both had the blackened rockfish sandwich. I had mine with no bun, and salad instead of fries. One drink each.
La Jefa will inform all of our data contributors on Tuesday, that I will be leaving the company in early February. I’ve been blue all day.
Its badly warped but I know how to fix that. A little steam and a few weights and it will be ready to be made into a pillow cover.
My yearly Oort jar is now empty.
That’s all the bits and pieces of thread as I was stitching this year. Some stitchers date and keep their jars, I just use one because I’m lazy. If I put snips of thread on my desk, they will end up on the floor and I’ll have to sweep them up before the fuzzbutts eat them. I’m far too lazy to get up and put the bits in the trash, so I put them in a jar. I cover the jar when I’m not actively supervising the yummy bits of cat blocking thread and am too lazy to dump the jar but once a year.
The piece I just finished was 18 gauge (18 stitches per inch) and the new piece is 24 gauge. Time was that I could easily switch between the gauges hourly but my eyes don’t like doing that anymore so now I’ll just stitch the same gauge all year and stop the eye strain.
This is one of the panic pieces I bought when the customs fees got so stupid. I’m glad I did, the prices have gone up already.
Now its time to clean up, I’ll chat more in the morning.
Just to elaborate: there’s a difference in the way ice is used for hockey and figure skating, and curling. Hockey and figure skating want the surface to be as smooth as possible, to ensure the skate can get even grip. That’s why there’s Zambonis, to shave and smooth the ice between periods and between competitions.
Curling is different. The game needs an uneven ice surface, because that’s what helps the rocks to curl: micromelting on the pebbles (little bumps of ice on top of the ice) provides a bit of slipperiness for the rock, and help ensure they curl. So as the final prep for the ice, the ice-makers walk up and down the sheets with a device that shoots droplets of water onto the surface, creating the pebbled effect.
After 10pm here, finishing my last You Tube Vid of the day (Girl with the Dogs) and will be heading off to bed then. 28F now so being underneath the heavyweight comforter in a half-hour will be nice.
flyboy, sad for you.
JtC, lovely work.
Piper, fascinating, knew about Zamboni’s of course but not what was needed for curling. Used to subscribe to Smithsonian Magazine, maybe I need to see if it’s still published or is all on-line…
And nearing bed time, so will catch up with y’all on the 365th day of the year.
