(Old) Mad March Hares in the MMP

Sketti sauce, meatballs, cheese tortellini and a martini for dinner tonight. No damage from the storms.

One of routes is the Animal and Plant Disease Lab, and several people use duct tape on the return sample boxes. Of all the things I’ve wanted to be growing up, Patient Zero isn’t one of them.

I feel kinda bad for the young men living upstairs from me. They’re nice enough, but someone had a brain hiccup that could have led to disaster. I’d spent quite some time getting aggravated about a beeping noise that I was sure was coming from outside somewhere, but that doesn’t pin it down a lot.

When I got home from a grocery run, I was unloading when the head maintenance guy came up to me and asked if I knew anything about a visit from the fire department. I explained that I had been out for a little while, but aimed him at the occupants of the apartment directly above me and the occupant of the one next door to them.

Turned out when the guys upstairs went out, someone left something on they shouldn’t have. So far as I’m aware, there wasn’t an actual fire, but the beeping had turned out to be their smoke alarm.

Those poor guys heard about it from the guy next door to them and the head maintenance guy. I did comment that timers can be a good thing, but that I was relieved there’d been no injuries. They’ve gotta be pretty embarrassed by the whole deal. OTOH, hopefully this translates into them being MUCH more careful about what’s still on when everyone leaves.

We have very cold wind tonight, Buddy’s being a noisy PITA about demanding that I open doors he then declines to go through, DH urgently needs sleep (so I’m trying to get Buddy to shut UP already), and my gate remote isn’t working, even after I gave it a new battery. This last will require a trip to the leasing office tomorrow (grumble). The office staff are pleasant people, but still…

At least the cupcakes that came home with me are good (they were the major incentive to do the grocery run when I did, since I had a major craving).

Now that Ash Wednesday has cine and gone there won;t be meat for me until Easter, It’s an observation, not a requirement, There used to be an LJS near me but it closed. The other two are way out of my way. So I will have to cook my own fish if I feel like something fleshy.

Anyone else have ashes imposed and stopping briefly at the store, on the way home, have someone ask if they know there’s a dirt spot on their forehead?

I’ll admit that before I learned about Ash Wednesday (I’ve never belonged to a church that followed that tradition), I was puzzled by the matter, but understand it enough now to not react to people around me who do have ash on them.

Lol, I’ve never seen anyone with ashes, and my husband is Catholic.

So hi, how ya been?

My hands are very crippled from muscular dystrophy, so typing is limited. But I wanted to say I got my toenails cut today for the first time in eight months and it feels so good!

Hello to @nelliebly and @LSLGuy glad you’re both back!
I’ve been … drained emotionally, mentally, and physically, so I’ve only done a quick-surf of some posts.
There’s too much to do, too much to try to keep track of.

We started the afternoon with sunny mild mid 40s and before my shift ended we had a full-blown howling snowstorm, so Mama Nature had her fun today.

S.M. looked like death and sent herself home with a likely ear infection.

Oh, and a special shout-out to the guy the other night, who smogged the kitchen and the rest of the cars waiting in line so hard, the lady in line behind him complained.
S.M. said that’s never happened before. (The complaint, not the blowing a lungfull of Devil’s Lettuce into my face and across the kitchen, cuz that happens frequently.
Frankly, sometimes, that brightens my evening.

Cigar smoke, now that’s just rude.)

Then S.M. very quietly, and I shouldn’t share this, was like, "

Summary

You should’ve asked where they got that from, that was strong stuff."

One of the Mumper wives specializes in ezzactly this task, and I am proud that she’s an honorary member, and happy for you that you feel better!

I can only imagine! Mine need cut monthly or more.

Don’t recall seeing you before, so welcome to the madhouse. We always welcome pet pictures, and don’t worry about staying on topic (we don’t).

Thanks! i have diabetes, so I have a podiatrist cut them every 9 weeks. But I missed an appointment because I was in the hospital. Then I was in and out of the hosp. several times and the appt. just didn’t get rescheduled until … now.

I’ve been off the SDMB a long time, but I’m glad to see a fair amount of old-timers around. I’ve come back seeking social media not owned by a billionaire and not completely consumed by news of him and the other hims.

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave.
[Pedantic nitpick]I was watching Celebrity Jeopardy tonight, and the Final Jeopardy clue was "this color was made from Mediterranean snail, and was rarely found on contries’ flags. The correct response was ‘purple’ which none of the got right. But one wrote ‘charcoal’, which is a technically correct answer, if you cremated the snails.[/Pedantic Nitpick]

The ice cube was batted under the fridge, and the bowl was 89% full, so somebody just let out a 20 second screech(First Cat Problems).

Although second hand wacky tobbacy in a joint full of pizzas is trouble brewing.

Welcome back, and yay for the toneail clipping.

And if you do find out let me know, because Spot is “Full moon on Friday the 13th with Mercury Retrograde” unhinged at the moment.

Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 10c/49f with a predicted high of 15c/59f, and sunny. Weather app says “Well, fuck me sideways, the fucking sun is out.” Yes, it’s true, it’s bright and shiny out there this morning.

Then we are doubly grateful that you continue to do it, even though it seems pointless. Making a stand for what you believe in is never wasted time though.

Sounds like it - I’m glad you made it home safely, I hope Moxie doesn’t get too spooked by the weather.

You’re good to be checking up on him, he’s possibly a bit freaked out by the whole situation and maybe he’s still deciding whether federal contracting is the world he wants to be in now, maybe he’s considering a jump back to the commercial world instead. Whatever he decides, I’m sure he’ll appreciate someone checking in with him and making sure he’s ok.

{{{{{Sticky Buns}}}}} I hope you got a decent sleep and Annie’s feeling better by now.

Silver linings, right? I’m glad you got to the bottom of the beeping mystery, I bet the guys upstairs were suitably sheepish.

Hello, and welcome back!

The Travel Gods were their usual capricious selves yesterday, the commute into work was not bad but the one home was beset by delays. I got there in the end, the cats were pleased to see me because nobody had been at home to feed them all day so they were dying of starvation (despite two breakfasts before I left, and access to four different bowls of dry, flavourless bits). I did my chores, had dinner and then went to the pub with my friends. It was a late night and I was not in bed until about 11.30am, and wide awake at 5am.

Today’s commute to campus was also beset by delays and broken trains. I was almost 45 minutes later into the office than yesterday but it’s not a massive issue as I didn’t have to be here early for anything. I’ve got one meeting this morning and then I can get on with whatever icky things I don’t want to do!

Oh yeah, judging by expressions and body language, much embarrassment. Hope they don’t wind up getting invited to move out over this. Oopses happen, so far as I know there was no significant damage, and they’re some of the most tolerable people to have lived in that apartment since I moved into mine. The sound level from them is totally reasonable, they’re polite and pleasant when I encounter them in the parking lot, and they don’t hang out on their balcony yelling into phones at godawful hours. I don’t want to swap them for another elephant mosh pit, thanks.

Arthritis is stupid. So is the flu. And some other things I can’t remember right now because it’s early and I’m only half awake.

I had a root canal and a temporary crown installed in January, I think. I’m hoping it will last forever as my insurance has changed.

This is the joke that I’ve shared with my best friend for the last 30 or so years. She is the one with the dirty forehead and I’m the one who thinks I’m hilarious by bringing it up year after year.

Annie is sleeping quietly on my lap this morning. Yesterday when I got home she was blowing snot rockets all over me. I got a message to call the vet back - something about her next dental service but I didn’t have the mental capacity to deal with that phone call yet.

My appointment went better than I expected. The doctor was friendly and didn’t feel the need to point out that I am a fat fat fatty.* He just suggested starting out with a different kind of brace than what I have now and also some more physical therapy. I am looking forward to the change in braces. I hope that it helps.

Today I must begin cleaning the house in earnest as one of my stepsons will be coming to visit this weekend. So, it does turn out to be a good thing that we waited to celebrate MusicMan’s birthday because now we’ll have extra company.

*Whenever I go to see a new doctor I get all hyped up and afraid that they’re going to yell at me for being fat and somehow imply that me having gotten fat in the first place was a stupid thing to do. Honestly, I’ve been to mostly a bunch of really good and kind doctors lately. I’m sad that those other assholes are still living rent-free in my head after all these years of me being fat. Because that’s the thing, persecution for fatness does not make me any less fat. As a matter of fact, historically, it’s contributed to shame related weight gain for me consistently. I’m not sure why I’m so hung up on this recently, but it is what it is.

Ok, I think I’m done with my post and my bunch of overused cliches.

Mornin’ all. About 45 minutes past sunrise. Clear skies, 63/17 on the way to 75/24. Yesterday was weird, alternately sunny & warm or widespread gray and spitting warm rain. The next few days should be simpler: pure sun, albeit quite cool overnight.

Had a pleasant happy hour dinner of two apps & some wine, followed by a stogie I really ought to stop ever getting. Otherwise a mostly slothful day.

Today presages more of the same. Might be warm enough to beach a bit. BB will be here Fri-Sun and looking forward to that pretty well fills my mind.

With luck, all y’all should be having your Spring begin sprunging here real soon. A “funny” thing happened a lot on the cruise in Norway. We’d be on the ship or traipsing through some town on a guided tour with everyone wearing their boots, gloves, & heavy coats and somebody would remark on the cold here in Norway: ~30F/0C. To which someone else would reply in a midwestern accent: “Yeah, 20 degrees warmer than back home right now.” This has been a beastly winter for a LOT of people.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 43 Amurrkin out and N.O.S. with a present high of 63, N.O.S. and windy. We will procure provisions this mornin’. Not a lot is needed and Food Kitty has Poopsie products on sale so we shall go there instead of the Pubic sto’. I have beef, veggie and barley soup in the slow cooker. That and cornbread will be sup.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, alas and bother, I suppose I should purtify and don attire acceptable for bein’ amongst the great unwashed. I am tired of peoplein’. This will be three days in a row!

Happy Thursday Y’all!

I was hired in Dec, 1985 and was under FERS…

FCD would take MIL periodically to get hers done, and every time, she informed us that you could get it done for free under Medicare. And every time I reminded her that we don’t have Part B so, no, it wouldn’t be free for us. But so far, I’m able to manage for myself.

And that jogged the memory of my dad cutting his dad’s toenails after my grandfather’s stroke. I had to be all of 9 or 10 at the time. Odd things we remember…

That’s what we’re promised later today and all of tomorrow. We shall see, shan’t we? If the overcast moves out, I’ll do some more raking this afternoon.

I’ll turn my leftover pot roast into this today. That’s pretty much all I have planned, except for maybe some raking. FCD was talking about going to the boat and sorting out some wiring before the new tanks are installed. Or he’ll finish up the installation drawings. Either way, he doesn’t need my help.

I slept with Mel last night and got close to 8 hours, but I feel like I have a melatonin hangover this morning. I just finished ingesting breakfast and I’m nearly done with my morning caffeine. I’ll hit the shower after my sweetie is done in there, tho I hope he’s still sleeping. The man will not stay in bed later than he thinks he should. We’re not under a looming deadline for anything, but he’ll still be up before 7 because he thinks he should be. I don’t know…

Just checked the weather site - it’s saying windy - if that’s the case, I’m not going to rake. No sense fighting Mother Nature if she wants to load the leaves into my garden. We’ll see.

Happy Thursday!

Ugh. I have bursitis, as well. Makes for misery for a side sleeper. I’ve found that doing a “figure four” during the night helps. If you’re not familiar, it’s just hoisting your ankle up to rest on the opposite knee without applying pressure. It stretches that hip. Only takes half a minute and really helps.

There’s an emergency situation here - I woke up and there’s no Diet Coke!! Work has been too busy this morning to slip away to a convenience store, so I will have to suffer a little longer without my morning caffeine.

Oh that’s scary - a neighbor starting a fire was always one of my biggest fears when I lived in an apartment.

I’m sorry things are so rough for you right now shoe.

Welcome back Gr8Kat! I recognize your name but I’m afraid I don’t remember any specifics about you.

Dude. That is the absolute worst.

I’d email one to you if I could…

ETA: I couldn’t right now even if I wanted to. There’s a dog’s head resting on my left hand and I can’t reach the Diet Coke with my right one!

OMG!!! You poor dear!! Should we call out the national guard?

I know when I don’t get my Diet Coke fix, I get a headache - caffeine withdrawal, I suppose. I do so feel for you!

Just back from a quick run to Food Lion. It’s unpleasant outside and the wind is picking up already - so much for raking. Maybe tomorrow.

I noticed my purse is starting to deteriorate so I decided to do an online search for a replacement. I must ask - WTF is vegan leather?? Is it what we called vinyl in the olden days? Also, what is it about a prestige designer brand that makes a shoulder bag cost over $300? Am I missing something?

I know the bags from WalMart ain’t the greatest in the world, tho they’re usually worth the price being charged. I think you know what to expect from a $15-$20 bag. But is there that big a difference between a $150 purse and a $250 purse, assuming the pricier one doesn’t have gold fittings or something? Is a designer label really worth that much? I suppose it is to some buyers.

Anyway, no rush to replace my bag. I’m trying to avoid Da Jungle. And I really should shop in person because there have been times what I ordered on line wasn’t exactly what I expected. Have I mentioned how much I hate shopping?

Purses aside, I honestly don’t get designer fashions. I must be lacking that girly gene or something. It’s one thing if you buy something because you like it, it’s another if you’ll only buy something with a specific label on it. Then again, it’s not my money, so in the grand scheme of things, it’s none of my business.

End of grump session.
