(Old) Marching along in the MMP

Wouldn’t it be easier to use an ATM?

How odd. My Jeeps all had the same problem (or perk, depending). I’d be driving on a perfectly decent dirt road, when suddenly the Jeep du jour would veer off onto a moose trail full of boulders, mud and lakes.

There was grumbling in this morning’s exercise gathering. Some were grousing about the dinner in the dining room a couple of days ago when they were served some sort of Tater Tot casserole. It was apparently nearly inedible and a lot of it went back to the kitchen. This recent “chef” (as he insists on being called) may not last too long if he incurs the wrath of the wrinkled. My wife orders dinner from down there from time to time, but I find institutional food to be uniformly tasteless and often poorly prepared. I spent too many years eating Navy chow and refuse to start doing it again this late in the game.

I noticed this, not nearly as strongly, about the Jeep Compass that we rented for a month back in 2022, while our Dodge Dart was in for some work at the dealership.  I got a definite sense of it having a soul, a will, a desire to explore.

Much, much more so, about the Jeep that we bought in 2024, and the second one that we bought after the first one sank five months later.  It is definitely not a mere machine, but a sentient being, with a mind and a soul and a will of its own.  It wants to explore, it wants to see new places, and whenever possible, it wants to go where normal cars cannot go.

I wonder if all Jeeps are like this.  I very much suspect so.  At least for those that are 4×4 and offroad-capable.  Somewhat to my chagrin, since the mid-1980s, the Jeep name has appeared on models that are not 4×4, not offroad-capable, and really not worthy of the Jeep name.  Except for the Wrangler/Gladiator models, all current and recent Jeep models have such variants at their lowest trims, not 4×4, not offroad-capable.  Maybe those don’t have souls and minds, like the higher Jeeps do.  Mine’s a fifth-generation Cherokee, KL, in the Trailhawk trim, which is the most offroad-capable version of any model for which the Trailhawk trim exists.

@Seanette has taken to calling my Jeep “Christine”, after the Stephen King story about a sentient car.  If I were going to name it, (which I am getting increasingly close to thinking I will), I would name it “Rocinante”.  I’ve been envisioning that name on each side, in stick-on letters, with a graphic silhouette of Don Quixote attacking a giant (but a modern, three-bladed, power-generating type of giant, such as those that infest such places as the mountains above Livermore).

What kind of Jeep do you have?  What model, what trim, what special features?

  Mine’s a 2017 Cherokee Trailhawk, 3.2-liter V6, with an aftermarket 2" lift and better, bigger-than-stock tires.

A morning writing group followed by errands. Home to order stuff on line thst could not be procured locally.

I will take a short nap, then eat leftover pizza, then spread another 6 bags of mulch before returning to my list of things to do today.

All three of mine were Wranglers. The old two-door type. First one was a '92 that we took to Africa with us, black over white with some cool juju decals on the sides. It seemed very happy to be there, especially when allowed to romp across the wadis where no roads exist. Rough suspension; driving down a dirt road required wearing a hardhat. Second was black/black new '98 with the softer suspension and an AC that actually worked. Third was a 2001 black/red(ish).

And a good early evening to all. Got my gym time in and repaid the large calorie loss with a couple grilled cheese with bacon Sammiches, so doing well while doing good. One of my coaches can’t make it to his game tomorrow (son’s birthday) so I get to be the fill-in coach, which is no problem, I was going to be out there anyway. Very cloudy and a little rain, with temperature down to 60F and falling.

Nut, one of those days, eh… And that family history could have made a good 1980’s TV Series…

Mollie, I have about 10 kids who registered late for soccer and are on a wait list, but I simply don’t have enough coaches to get them assigned to teams. Hope he has better luck.

red, your probably right, but I have a peculiar compulsion to try and have my checking account balance with even numbers at the end of the month (like $900 or $1600 for example) and ATM’s just don’t issue money totaling $272.89…

Bob-B, never been an off-roader, but have to say that car looks the part.

And just past 6pm, so need to finish the evening internettin’ and watch some basketball. Take care all.

Lady SCAdian says the best way to find a lost item is to buy a replacement for it.

I know the one I lived in when I was four was torn down very shortly after we moved out (Sears were expanding their car park), and the one we lived in when I was ten-twelve sat empty for twenty years before being torn down sometime during the next ten years.

My brother told me when I first enlisted that submarines had the best food in the Navy. He was right.

The chair arrived a bit after 2 pm. It had to be unboxed to fit into the lift. Once out of the box it went well. Lager and I are enjoying chair time. He is very happy with it. Koritza was first on the chair. She hopped on, quick sniff, and off. She takes longer to warm up to new furniture and reshuffling.

It does take up more room than I expected. I will have much reshuffling. Luckily, my levenger table works well with the curve of the chair. Levenger Desks | The No-Room Hideaway Desk

Last night I put together a pantry cupboard. I’m still deciding if I will put the doors on it. Of course I put a major piece together upside down. Le sigh. I always do this. This time it was not an easy fix. I would have to take the entire bottom off the thing. I thought I would try working around doing that. It is holding up…but is very delicate.

When I moved the old thing out I noticed a faint gas smell near the pipe. The building has gas for cooking. I had the stove removed and the pipe capped. The building engineers checked it out this morning. It is a very slight leak that is barely picked up by the device. It is around the valve. If i hadn’t swapped out furniture I would not know it was leaking. The plumber will fix it next week.

I’ll decide what to do about the cupboard when the plumber arrives. I’ll have to move it for the repair.

I may putter about a bit more tonight..right now being on the chair with lager is paramount.

Howdy Y’all! Gettin’ candles ready will be a next week chore. I saw a note in the Sacristy this mornin’ that said everything would be all clean and shiny by Moanday. Since I will be at the church house every single day for one service or another every day from this Sunday through Resurrection Sunday, it will get done. I call Holy Week Episcopal revival week cause there are services all week long. Current Priest loves him a service, he does.

The house I grew up in is still there. My ‘rents sold it when they got rid of the sibs and me and bought a house in the country. Sis lives in that house. I am in my third house and plan to stay in it until I move to the home or columbarium, which ever comes first.

Taters Huzzah for your son and his new digs! I am sure Mazie and Buster will have many good visits with their boy in his new home.

BooFae I sincerely hope the entitled a*hole graduates this year.

Rocker yikes about the gas leak! Yay for new chair! I am terrible with puttin’ things together. We bought a nice storage cabinet for the kitchen several years back that needed to be assembled. I used my favorite tool, my bank account.

Today’s fun: The Exceptions Resolution program that lets us fix bad addresses was down over half the company. It wowkred after a while on the 100 and 200 Slides, but not the Mez or 200 Slide, so they brought J over to work on the 100. Somehow we managed to ru though the 3 big carts of last night’s leftovers. And we had the obligatory powdered box of porcelain tiles from Home Despot. I came home, did laundry and hung it up, and had a bowl of dry, flavorless bit(with cranberries). I napped. When I woke up, I streched right when Spot was leaping up on the bed, an accidently give him The People’s Elbow in the cranium.

  1. Why? 2. Can you have Troublesome Minion put into that category?

I find it useful at work dealing with half wrecked labels [Picard]Computer, magnify and enhance[/Picard].

Yay!

Mine used to violently swerve into bar parking lots. But it was fun to drive over 5 foot snow berms in parking lots to get to the faster exit.(Mine was a 2001 Grand Cherokee)

As a fan of The Expanse, I support this.

:open_mouth:

Just finished watching Merrily We Roll Along - I lurves me some Sondheim! Then I got a message from someone who wants to buy my big Fire TV, so yay for that. I hates Fire TV, I does! She’ll pick it up after No Kings. I plan to go but I expect to leave early. Not sure I can take 2 hours on my feet in the cold.

For now tho, it’s almost bed time since I had a bad night. So I’m off!

I only very recently was made aware of that show and its premise.

The name Rocinante comes from the story of Don Quixote; it’s the name of his horse.  From what little I know of The Expanse, I see how it would make sense for the protagonists to name their spacecraft after Don Quixote’s horse.

Late night final as I head off to Slumberland. Nothing much new to report, answered a couple of soccer questions and printed off the current rosters for all the teams since I am positive somebody will get it screwed up. 51F heading down to 39F so glad soccer doesn’t start until 9am.

Truth.

rocky, enjoy the new chair. And glad the gas leak was caught while it was a minor thing.

doggio, just be happy that Spot is not the vindictive sort…oh, wait…

FCM, a nice show and a fire sale…not a bad evening at all.

And that’s all, folks. Off to bed I go to see what time my bladder wants me up again (hopefully tomorrow).

I just finished watching a Call of Cthulhu video and will go to bed shortly.

Mrs Magill and Squeaky are headed down to Huntsville tomorrow morning to tour UAH. Squeaky is interested because his Granddad learned programming at the NASA facility shortly after graduating college.

Fun fact - shortly after we moved to Tennessee, my parents immediately wanted to come visit us so my mother could visit the Jack Daniel’s Distillery, and my father could visit the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville. We did both. My father ended up spending two hours geeking out with another retired NASA engineer.

I’ll have to tell him about myself eventually. I’m not worried he’ll reject me. I’m just worried he’ll not accept me fully.

Right - that’s enough gin for an evening.

She’s right, based on my experience.

IIRC, Spot is a cat. Vindictive goes with the feline territory.

Week Two at the new job has been completed. Increasingly, I’ve been left to my own devices. I’m becoming more confident. The last couple/few days – especially today – I’ve fielded phone calls. Today I got a call from a Spanish-speaker, and I don’t speak Spanish. He wanted a certain person, who was not in the office today. So I said, ‘Yo no habla Español. Uno momento,’ and used Google Translate to see how to tell him the person isn’t in, and may I send him to her voicemail. He said, ‘Yes!’ So problem solved. My cow-orker/trainer observed the interaction and said she was going to write me a kudos.

Up, caffeinated and sheveled. Off to heave. Their calling me in 30min early, so work is already a trainwreck full of dumpster fires. It’s 50 degrees Ferret Height(10.0 Centipedes). And today’s high is only supposed to be 59 Ferrets.

Cool.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 62 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 70, partly cloudy and windy. OYKW wants to go to Asia Buffet for an early lunch. Apparently he has a gnawin’ and a cravin’. I would prefer to stay in da cave all day, but if that’s the only place we go I shall survive I suppose. The rest of the day will be spent in hermit mode.

FlyBoy glad the new gig is goin’ so well.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. I suppose I should purtify myself and consider some appropriate for bein’ amongst the great unwashed attire as well.

Happy Sattidy Y’all!

Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 6c/44f with a predicted high of 8c/48f and partly cloudy. Weather app says “I would talk about something other than the fucking weather, but I don’t really have anything else of fucking value to say.”

Taters How exciting for your son to be buying that house! I’m sure you’ll have just as much fun helping him move in

Good news that you’re feeling better, oatmeal and tea is a very safe bet. In fact, that’s what I had for breakfast just now!

Mooooom love the new glasses! I’m likely to be ordering some spares from t’interwebz soon and will be looking for something a little bit different.

I would love to sometimes, she was off on another rant yesterday  Bad Student was explained upthread, she has a history of rude behaviour including threats to staff and, apparently, making unfounded allegations against people for things they could not possibly have done. Four more months and she may well be gone!

Well done! That was good thinking, and you deserve to have it recognised. Congrats on having a good second week. They’ll soon be learning what a great asset you are.

Yesterday was not a bad day at irk, in the end. TM was fine until the crew from Facilities came up to have a look around the office we’ll be vacating (hopefully next month). I had a couple of questions about something, then she chimed in with a bunch of concerns and complaints that are nothing to do with Facilities, and also not really anything to do with TM. I had to email the lady in charge afterwards, partly to apologise!

I got home at a reasonable time, only slightly delayed by the vagaries of public transport. I had few plans for the evening, I didn’t do the one thing I’d thought I might do because I lost the motivation  Had a nice bit of slothing on the sofa with Blossom, watched a bit more of The Capture, and was in bed by 11pm. Up early-ish today, cats are fed and watered, I’ve had breakfast and I’m pottering along until it’s time to go to the gym. I’ve got a couple of errands to do this afternoon, then I will be a hermit for the rest of the weekend.
