Old Punker seeks NEW PUNK

You should check out the New Bomb Turks.
And so should everybody.

They’re great, they’re from Ohio and they rock!
Fast, angry garage punk with great lyrics, fine melodies and raw power!
If you get only one album, get their debut “destroy, oh boy!”.

Still are. New album *The Difference Between Me and You is that I’m Not on Fire * out in next couple of weeks.
Surprised no-one’s mentioned Rancid yet: The Clash, basically, but done with heart.

Hey marky33 middle finger…you dare to besmirch The Clash…oh and the person that mentioned them in the same breath(?) as Green Day…middle finger

Where’s an evil, devil spew-y smiley when I need one?

Hey Cap’n, you misunderstand. I love The Clash.
The “but” was countering the fact that Rancid are not original, I was not suggesting The Clash had no heart: I’m pushed to think of a band that had more, in fact.
Apologies for any distress caused.

Yessss, Turbonegro is awesome. A little gay, but awesome. Of course, I think being a little gay is a requirement for starting a punk band. haha.

I also like The Hellacopters.

Not to get off topic, but I’m calling BS. Full Circle and About Time sound exactly the same and IMHO, aren’t better than the first two albums. Any Pennywise album after the second one isn’t worth getting. My recommendation are the first album Pennywise, and the second Unknown Road.

Wha? The Supersuckers punk? Not the times I’ve seen 'em. And their country shows are just just as good as their rock shows, only different.

Incidentally, KEXP will be starting a new punk show soon–I think it’ll be on Saturday nights, but I’m not sure exactly when. You might want to check it out.

Yes, I admit to Anti-Flag. Lots of my friends :dubious: me on that one. I figured I’d toss out a variety of stuff as examples. I don’t really know why I like them, or why I never stopped liking them, they don’t really fit. Go figure. I also don’t know why I never particularly cared for The Minutemen. Taste is a weird thing.

Huh? Apocalyptica? For those of you who don’t know, it’s 4 Hungarian guys on electric cellos doing covers of Metallica’s earlier songs (pre-Load). It sounds freakin’ awesome and they’re one of my favorite groups, but can Metallica be construed as anything remotely like punk, prog, or a mixture of both?

OK, my two cents having been weighed in on that - has anyone mentioned A.F.I. or Less Than Jake yet? (Yes, my “punk” tastes lean towards ska, I know…)

Also not quite “punk,” but a delightfully chaotic yet harmonious sound is System of a Down. Definitely political in their lyrics, always fun, surprisingly moving at odd moments, and incredibly frenetic.

The 'suckers are punk as fuck, and yeah their country stuff kicks ass as well. I don’t much care for Eddie’s new solo album though. It’s more Glenn Campbell than Johnny Cash if you know what I mean. Maybe it’ll grow on me though.

Hey, if people can classify pap like New Found Gloryhole and Good Charlotte as punk, then I am well within my rights to call The Supersuckers punk! :dubious:

New Found Glory and Good Charlotte are to punk what Ja Rule is to gagsta’ rap.
Note on Good Charlotte: How the fuck can you call yourself a punk band when your singer has a lisp?

Well, unless your band happens to have Jello Biafra as a singer that is.

Well some of these aren’t new but I didn’t see them on your list so i nominate:
The Lunachicks
McLusky
Boris the Sprinkler
The Dickies
The Queers
Zero Boys
Dropkick Murpheys
59 Time the Pain
Aerobitch
Diesel Boy
Hi Standard

Forgot to mention - Operation Ivy Was Ted Armstrong’s first band. Another punk group with ska leanings. They only did one album and I’ve had NO luck in finding a copy on CD. Maybe I’m just not looking in the right places? Anyhoo, He went on to create Rancid, and I give them a real hearty secord, or third, or fourth or whatever we’re up to now.

And add my vote to NOFX:

They got together and did a whole album covering each other’s songs (another one I can’t seem to find anywhere): BYO Split Series vol. III: NOFX/Rancid

I just registered to post on this thread.

I tell you what, about half the shit people have suggested are just guitar pop of varying degrees of speed. I mean, come the hell on, he asked for punk, not pseudo-goth crap.

That being said, there are a few excellent bands on here so far. The Lunachicks, if you aren’t already a huge fan, are a must-have. Nasty women playing nasty punk - saw them open up for the Buzzcocks a few years ago and they blew the old bastards out of the water. Op Ivy, if you’re into ska at all. Dropkick Murphys, but only the albums Sing Loud, Sing Proud, Do or Die, and The Gang’s All Here - they do excellent celtic punk. While you’re in a bagpipe mood, check out The Real McKenzies - Scottish punk by way of Canada.

Thug Murder is basically the Clash, if they were all girls and from Japan. easily the strangest oi I’ve ever heard, but get their album The Thirteenth Round and you won’t be dissapointed.

U.S. Bombs - you may have been into them before, they’re still around and still putting out albums.

Speaking of, ignore those that tell you, “there is no punk, it’s all radio punk now” - that just means someone’s out of the scene and has no idea what’s still going on. I went to three spiky-headed punk shows in the past two weeks, I’m going to two this week (okay, one’s an oi show), and all of them are a hell of a lot of drunken fun.

If Fuckface Jones ever plays near you, make a point to go see them.

The Transfusions are somewhere between The Ramones and faster pogo punk, with sunglasses. They just put out a demo/bootleg that’s well worth getting a hold of.

Roger Miret and the Disasters - Roger from Agnostic Front’s oi band. What more to say?

I could go on, but I’m going to just add some labels instead.

PunkCore: Mohawks, safety pins, and bondage pants. Just ignore The Casualties, they’re pure shit.

TKO Records: mostly streetpunk/oi - their Punch Drunk compilations are a good place to check out plenty of different bands for super fuckin cheap.

Epitaph: just sold to a major label, but if you don’t care about that, check it out. A good place to find a lot of current punk with a more classic sound (but they also carry some real stinkers).

And it’s not a label, but if you’re truly interested in the state of the scene today, go to World Wide Punks and check out their forums. It’s got a good mix of older and younger punks, a few skins and rudeboys. A lot of boob and beer talk, but ain’t that part of punk, too?

Oi!

  • Operation Ivy Was Ted Armstrong’s first band.*

I forgot to say: it’s TIM Armstrong, not Ted.

I get the feeling that there are a lot of “young folk” posting here, which really makes me happy happy happy.

One thing I always loved about punk was the endless argument over what’s punk and what sucks. Any movement that absolutely refuses to cohere… well, that’s a plus. It short-circuits the life cycle that inevitably leads to death.

Some of the stuff I’m seeing are bands I actually listened to back in the day, like Bad Brains. My list in the OP wasn’t comprehensive by any stretch of the imagination – just stuff that came to mind at the time. (I happened to be making a compilation CD for an old friend who bit the potato pretty hard but never made it past London Calling, punkwise – I think my 999 tapes turned him off… too hard for a Devo-te.)

I do like ska when it’s done right (i.e., relentless), and even silly shit like our old 1HW friend Athletico Spizz 80.

Thanks for the resources, too.

OK, here’s an admission the youngsters will probably laugh at – I’ve never downloaded music or played mp3’s. In fact, I’m a big vinyl freak. But unlike most of my friends at the time, I immediately fell in love with CDs when they first came out. I remember being at work, tossing one (a demo) around the room and playing it just trying to get it to skip. Finally had to scratch it with a screwdriver. Sounds really really dumb now, but when you came from the vinyl age, it was just AWESOME! Thing is, they told us back then, “Oh, the prices of CDs will come down” – they never did!

Come to think of it, have you tried listening to Chrome or Helios Creed’s solo work? It’s more industrial than punk, but might have some appeal.

Whoops, my bad. I suppose I would also get in trouble if I referred to him as “You know, that guy from Green Day’s brother.”
<Ducks from various objects lobbed in my general direction>

Funny how the most die-hard punk fan I know still thinks that is a true statement…

Are there any great political bands that aren’t leftist?
