old show about dinosaurs.....

When I was young…back in the time…I used to watch a show where some young kids were going down a river and the farther they went down the river the farther back in time they wound up being. They watched all kinds of things happen from the river. And they tried to figure out where they were in time by the kinds of dinosaurs they were watching… I don’t remember much about the show, except that I found it completely fascinating. This would have been in the early to mid-60’s. Does anyone else remember this show at all? It wasn’t a cartoon. At least I don’t remember it as one, but I was probably 8 yrs old, and my memory of this show isn’t very clear. I think it came on right after school was out, and may have been a part of another show. I’d appreciate anything any one else may remember about this. Thanks, learae

“The Land Before Time.” You a Chicagoarean? Used to be played on “Garfield Goose.” Just found that my wife has it on tape.

Nope, nope. “Land Before Time” was a series of cartoon movies about dinosaurs. Learae is referring to “Land of the Lost.” It had Sleestaks (sp?). I seem to recall talk of Sleestaks on this very board a while ago. They were bug-eyed lizard people who hissed a lot, but moved with glacial speed, and thus were pretty easy to escape.

I seem to recall sneaking about on that show, Lux. but my noggin stores very few accurate memories.

I thought it was Land of the Lost (“Martial, Will and Holly / On a routine expedition…”), but the OP says that the kids had to figure out when they were by identifying the dinosaurs as they (the kids) floated down the river. In Land of the Lost they went over a waterfall and would up wherever it was they were. Could’ve been during the titles, though. I think this show was on in the 70s, not the 60s.

BTW: There was a cartoon that was on around the same time about people who went to a “prehistoric” place. But they were still in the present day. They just couldn’t get out of where they were. (In one episode, they saw an airliner fly over.) I don’t remember the name of that one.

I recall seeing that one, too (if I’m not mistaken). I saw an episode when I was 4 (that would be 1962-3 or therabouts).

The dinosaurs were stop-motion animated, and I have the impression (possibly incorrect) that the folks headed downstream were boyscouts. My memories of this are very dim, but I remember watching part of an episode witn my oldest sister, and she drew my attention to it by calling the dinosaurs to my attention.

Was this a TV show or a movie? There was a movie that came out in the 60s called “Journey to the Beginning of Time” . It was actually an Eastern European movie with the scenes of the kids added in the US. The framing story starts and ends at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC. The dinosaurs are animated, and aren’t bad.

Land of the Lost. Duuuuuude! Chaka! I loved that guy!

I sometimes forget that the world didn’t explode into being in 1977.
