[Old] Threads

I really enjoyed reading a thread brought up from 1999, sadly it was locked, i have no interest in starting a thread with the same title, what I liked was just that a 15 year old thread exists, reading it was retro and yet oddly current.
Do all threads get locked after a period of time and where can i find all these old threads? many thanks.

Old threads get locked only if someone tries resurrecting one with no additional input. Otherwise, if an update to the thread is warranted, it won’t be locked.

I don’t know how you can search for just old threads, but Google is a better search engine than the one provided here. I just Google “SDMB: xxxxx” and the first hit will also have a link at the bottom saying “More results from boards.straightdope.com.”

ETA: Where xxxxx is the topic of interest.

Check out http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/archive/index.php

This is better suited to About This Message Board than General Questions. I have edited the title to better indicate the subject.

Thanks guys! Damn, I thought that I finally got the correct forum to post in, sorry and thanks for the move.

You can change your settings to display all threads, too. It’s in your profile under the “User CP” (Control Panel) tab.

On each forum’s main page, at the bottom in the “sort by” dropdown, select “last post time” or “thread start time”, then in the “sort order” dropdown, select “ascending”, then in the “from the” dropdown, select “beginning”.

Note: lots of the oldest posts will have no user name due to some technical problems in the past.

emphasis mine

In the SDMB lame Advanced Search, you can specify “Find posts from” (date) AND “Newer/Older”.

So it is possible to search for a topic and restrict results to those “older than” some arbitrary date.
