(Old) Toss it on the grill in the MMP

I think they are totally asking for it naming a hurricane Karen. Can you imagine the scene that spoiled bitch is gonna create? They really are going to have the store torn down and the manager killed.

I know an Andrea, Barry, Erin, and Gabrielle. Have worked with an Humberto, Nestor, and Pablo. The majority of my former employer’s ethnic Latin pilots gravitate to Miami, so those sorts of names are very, very common there.

Tanya was a project manager who worked at my IT company mumble years ago. She was a hurricane in a bottle. You do not piss off Tanya or deliver your stuff to her late. Other than that she was a good worker and easy to have around.

Here’s the official list for all years and a bunch of fun background info: NHC - Tropical Cyclone Names.

Blood draw was nominal & breakfast is ordered but not yet arrived.

Thanks to all for the well wishes about my impended dental “encounter” as the medics say. Don’t know what, if any, post-op meds they’ll prescribe. I stock acetaminophen at home, and have a few ibuprofen left from the small bottle I got a couple weeks ago for my damaged shoulder. Which is a lingering annoyance now, but no more than that. Thank goodness.

Rainy drippy day here, as was much of yesterday. Warm, mid 70s / ~25 overnight and mid 80s / ~30 during the day,

On a low carb diet, it’s a starch, so that may be why you feel like it’s not a veggie.

I know several on the list. In 2022 there was one with my name.

Awake and internettin’, but have yet to take Nelson out, breakfast or caffeinate because I don’t want to wake up Sis.

I’ll be going to the social security office today to get more info. Once that is settled, I can begin making arrangements to officially retire from my irkplace.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Mornin’ everyone.

It’s 48°F and mostly cloudy right now. Our expected high temperature is 77F, with partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies.

JtC, I’m so glad you found Harry with the raven’s help. I wish him a full recovery.

Pilot, I hope the crown prep goes smoothly and that the pain is minimal.

I went to VBS a couple of times as a kid. I don’t ever remember gettin’ hawt dogs or hot food. Ours was during the day. I think we had sammiches.

I spent the entire day in the backyard dog-free zone yesterday. I amended the soil, planted some additional plants, and relocated some older ones to new locations. I then cleaned all the pavers off. All that is left for that area is to plant the slope. My lawn in that area is really bad this year and looks sad. It needs a good thatching, scarifying, and reseeding. Creeping clover and moss have taken over the areas that are not full of thatch. However, that section of lawn is so small that I’m half wondering if it wouldn’t be better to pull it up, add soil and sand, and lay sod. Either way, it’s more work. Still mulling it over.

By the time I was done yesterday, I was too tired to take pictures. I came in and took some ibuprofen because I knew my back would start screaming. This strategy worked and I feel normal today.

The pest guy is coming today, so I’ll have to hop in the shower and tidy the house. He doesn’t really spend much time in the house, other than to say hello to the pups. He loves to come in and give them a good scritch. He then checks the traps under the house and the bait stations stowed in various locations outside.

My old SD contacted me yesterday. It was good to hear from her. She wanted to pass my name along to a private partner from my former organization for a job opportunity. I told her that I was very appreciative of her thinking of and recommending me, but that I wanted to have this summer to assess what I want to do. It may be a full-time RDOS position, or it could entail a part-time or full-time job. For now, I want to decompress. She told me she is doing the same thing as I am.

I also heard from a former co-worker, and we’re making plans to meet soon at a wildlife preserve for a walk and then lunch. It’ll be good to see her again.

I was surprised to discover that my name has been used several times for both hurricanes and tropical storms. The last time it was used was in 1977.

Pavo, it’s nice that mama and baby deer feel your yard is a haven.

Nellie, I’m sorry you have the crud. I hope you’re feeling much better today.

Alrighty, things to do, and places to go. I hope you all have a good day.

ravens are so very smart. that bird will be getting quite the treats for some time. good work, jane on understanding the bird quite literally raising the alarm. a very good thing that harry is buds with the raven.

i hope harry recovers well.

poor gg, he just wanted a fun time in his water park.

fachverwirrt, that pic is even more impossibly cute! nice yummy clover in your yard.

We caught mom picking up baby this morning.

My wife caught this from the neighbor’s yard, which I guess is where she goes to nurse.

VBSs are (or were) primarily organized and run by volunteer church women. In our generation vast majorities of those were at-home mothers, available to put on a day time VBS. Now that volunteer core have 9-5 jobs so VBS has moved to late afternoon & evening when working parents can get them there after work and enough of them can volunteer. Around me now many of the VBSs have also dropped back to 3 days rather than 5. I don’t know when the change happened but in the early ‘90s when my three were of that age it was still all-day and M-F.

Sweet pix of mama and bebeh deer.

Colonoscopy prep today. I’m gonna die without food for 24 hours! The nurse who did my phone intake assured me I will get juice and cookies afterwards.

Well, duh! I shoulda thunk of that! MIL used to volunteer at her various churches over the years, even when her kids were grown and gone.

OK, time to head to Aldi, then figure out the rest of my day.

Thanks again for the kind words, I really didn’t do much at all, I was just first to notice. Once I made the first call, everything started happening around me.

We’ve gotten a group text from Harry. He says he’s doing fine, his doctor is a jerk who won’t let him go home without more tests and Mrs H won’t listen to him either. (no coffee yet, I don’t blame him for being crabby.)

He says he didn’t have a stroke, he just got too close to the edge without realizing how soft it was and the fall knocked the wind out of him.

He also sent a PS an hour later telling everyone that fat ravens can’t fly, so I’m guessing there were more plates of food on their porch this morning.

How sweet is that? It’s nice that mama thinks your yard is a safe place for her baby, and you and wife are good folks for being sure that it is.

Cookies and juice tomorrow are not cookies and juice today! You have my sympathy.

Do you really need grass there? It sounds like white clover and wildflowers might be easier to care for?

Back from Aldi. Eggs are down to $2.96/doz - gee, thanks Unca Donnie!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Question for Aldi shoppers: Do you find a lot of folks in your area just leave their carts in the corral without taking their quarter? Last 2 times I went, people had parked their carts and were walking away while pointing them out to me. And today when I left, I saw at least 3 other carts with quarters in the slots.

Lunching now, thinking about what I’ll fix for supper…

Good for you! That’s awesome that you are committed to taking time for yourself.

That’s what I do, generally speaking.

I’m back from the dentist. Does anybody else have the Novocain make them shaky? I’ve had that happen for the last several years. What makes it more fun is that the first round of shots are hardly ever enough to numb me. The other new and exciting fun thing is that it appears that being on a GLP-1 enhances the effect. I honestly wasn’t sure I’d be able to walk out to the reception area.

Finally made it home and there is a poodle here to comfort me.

I’m still feverish, but I kept down a half-slice of toast, so progress!

JtC, one more heroic act, and we’re going to insist you wear a cape and tights. I’m so glad Harry is doing better.

It must vary based on location. My great-nephew in Louisiana is attending VBS this week, and it’s from 10 AM until 2 PM. The VBS teachers are mostly teachers and paras who have the summer off. I just checked three local churches here, and they all have VBS in the morning. wonder how they staff them.

Taters, sounds like a wise plan. This way, you’ll know in advance that the position suits you.

I was on the 300 Sort table for most of the shift. Just when it seemed it would be an easy, early day, they pulled half the people until the whole table jammed up. When it got down, I had to pull for Middle Red and load one truck(yet a another different person in that set), then over to pull for Top Blue and load one of the trucks, because Loud Dude was spending more time complainging that loading. I stopped at Aldi, because I forgot meatballs for tomorrow’s meatballs and tortellini, and Sur La Table for a knife sharpener. Now it’s naptime for me and Spot.

does that mean the mistress was “her in the stables” or “her hiding in the privacy hedge”?

It’s a sign that The Invisible Mole People are massing for an assault.

I use that one when beer is on sale at Teeter.

It doesn’t work on me at all. Ow.

This is good news!

Second day of roofers. They were here from 8:30-8:00 yesterday.

  • Our plywood is good, which saves us $40 per sheet.
  • Only one fascia board needs replacing (that’s “needs replaced” to some of you).
  • They’re using a pot of sample paint we have in the garage to paint the new fascia so it looks better until the painters come.
  • We have two roof vents that aren’t attached to anything. By later today, if not already, they’ll be removed and patched.
  • We’ll have a lovely row of attic vents added.
  • All the plastic vents (which are deteriorated and one of which leaked after the now-unnecessary roof cleaning) will be replaced with metal, leaving only the exterior dryer vent to replace.
  • A call is in to the handyguy for some minor work if he’s free before the painters schedule.

ETA: Oh, yeah,

  • Had a locksmith replace the front door lock, though he hasn’t re-appeared with a matching back door lockset. OTOH, we haven’t had to pay him yet.

Here it is 5 morning VBSs, 6 evening VBSs and one hybrid one that does evening on a Friday and then all day Sat and Sun over the weekend.

Probably a lot of regional variation meeting a lot of tradition and both wrestling with social and economic realities.

I just wanna go to Swampy’s VBS for the food and to hang out eavesdropping on the kitchen.

Almost 70 years ago I went to a VBS at a rock-ribbed Congregational church down the hill from me. I still shudder a little when I look back on it-they gave stern Puritanism a whole new definition and the adults all seemed to resent kids. They harped on original sin the whole time and the food was regrettable, no redemption there.

Well, I’ve been recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, and have actually taken a class and talked with a dietician, so of course I know everything!

In all seriousness, corn, peas, winter squash (acorn, etc., not zucchini) are all called “starchy vegetables”. Heck, I remember that from a kid, long before I became “all knowing”. They’re a little better for you than potatoes and other pure starches. My “standard” meal is a protean, a vegetable, and a starch, and I’ve always considered an ear of corn as a starch; my wife always considered that a vegetable.

Looking on my handy-dandy chart, they treat corn EXACTLY like potatoes - 1/2 cup = 15g carbs. Squash is 1 cup. Peas are 1/2 cup, but pea pods are considered “nonstarchy”, so 1 cup = 5 carbs.

Oooh. I can have 3 cups of popcorn as a snack!

Tell me truly - are you the only one who actually works there??

I just finished pruning and feeding my azaleas - I think I have 18 of them, maybe 19? Anyway, the damned things fought back - I have 3 stab wounds that bled all over the place, but they’re now clean and band-aided. I also dug out one dead azalea and replaced it with a hosta that somehow took root outside of the garden. Hope it’ll be safe from the damned deer who have noshed several of my hosta to leaflessness. Stoopit deer.

Anyway, I’m watering the azalea food into their roots since no rain is predicted till this weekend. That involves dragging the sprinklers all over the yard. Good times!

Taking a break now with some ice water. Supper will definitely involve a salad, but I haven’t decided on the protein yet. Maybe I’ll chop up some ham and turkey and cheese and make chef salads?

There are days when I wish I had a psychic cook who would prepare exactly what I want for supper before I know that’s what I want.

That’s what FCD has.

Lucky guy…

A, J, K, O - high school. B - my first boat. M - niece. R - friend’s daughter. T (and also a different K) - church.

Wiki says thus far there has never been a hurricane, cyclone, or typhoon with my name.

Once or twice. What’s a lot more common is people seeing me walking toward the store and give me their cart – about even odds, I think, whether they’ll accept the quarter I offer them. If I get a cart that already has a quarter in it, I leave it there when I return the cart.

Think I’ll start giving that as my occupation on income-tax forms.

In the “Atlantic hurricane” article Wiki has a map showing hurricane tracks from 1851 to 2019. I want to know which one it was that crossed the border from ME or VT, continued north almost to Hudson Strait, turned left to Hudson Bay, went south across the Bay to the Belcher Islands, then turned back east and lost itself in the mass of other tracks near the Qubec/Labrador border!

ETA: I have no idea why Discourse thinks this post is a reply to miss red, not to the thread…
