I lived most of my life on the East Coast, and was accustomed to drinking Old Tyme Jamaican Style Ginger Beer, a pungent brew that is unequaled by any other ginger beer.
I can’t find it on the West Coast, and can’t find either the address/home page for the company or a retailer who will ship it.
Any ideas? I’m also open to trying West Coast ginger drinks, but unless they make my eyes water and my stomach burn, I’m not interested.
Look for a brand called Stewarts Ginger Beer. Does the trick for me (if it’s too weak for you, then I’d really like to try your brand :)). Discovered it in MA, but found it at many groceries in WI. Don’t know if I ever saw it out west though…
Stewart’s isn’t a bad substitute for Olde Tyme, nor is Sioux City, nor The Ginger People. My favorite however, is Reeds “extra ginger” ginger brew, available at many organic grocery stores.
Avoid Faygo’s version tho.
And search the archives. We’ve had a few Ginger Beer threads before.
There’s a brand of ginger ale called Blenheim from South Carolina that’s pretty zippy. I’m not sure what the difference is between ginger beer and ale, though. There are a lot of places on the web that will ship Blenheim to you.
I just had Asian Spice Ginger Beer. Nice and spicy, especially at the botton of the bottle. I found Reed’s and Stewart’s a bit too sweet and bubbly. Goya has a facility in California, but their Ginger Beer makes me think that they should stick with Malta.
Ginger ale and ginger beer are two very, very different beverages. Ginger ale is soda with a light ginger accent. Ginger Beer can be carbonated lightly (but shouldn’t be, if you ask me) ginger intesive drink. Like ginger tea with honey and a few bubbles.
I’ve been to the odd bar where a good strong ginger beer isn’t around. In such a case, you can put a dash of bitters in ginger ale or weak ginger beer. Mind you, it’s far from Old Tyme, but in a pinch it’s palatable.
