My theory is that cats who have never lived rough, don’t know that times can get hard, they just trust that their lifelong slaves will deal with any issues. Cats who were brought up by hoomans and then tossed out to fend for themselves like Buddy was KNOW that things can go sideways at any moment so will resist any change.

I’m so sorry that you are dealing with this, I really hope you aren’t out a lot of money for incidentals.

Vinyl flooring nowadays is very nice and so easy to clean. It will be louder with more echo but if you are lucky, one or both of yours will learn how to peel out and drift around corners.

Been there, done that! We went through a couple of months without knowing who was going to get paid from where next while our retirements were getting sorted out. It’s not like we were worried about how our bills were going to be paid, it was just such a habit. You will get over it

We did that road with a bunch of friends on Harleys. Then we stopped and talked about it and changed formation and did it again. And then we went to the roadhouse and got drunk and slept in tents in the parking lot.

Good times.

So, those slackers on the other side of the fence haven’t done a thing all day. I know this because I spent most of the day sitting on the porch and watching! There’s been a lot more traffic down that road though, I saw three cars I didn’t recognize slowing down to look. At one point four cars drove by in an hour which is just annoying because the poor homeless birds can’t settle when there is constant traffic.

My favorite genre usually includes everyone going mad and/or dying. No judging here!

So, big news! Today I learned that I can actually make a nice Cheddar. This has been years in the making and I have no idea why I struggled so much, but I’ve got it now. The texture is still soft and it is pretty mild, but I opened it at 3 months instead of giving it more time. Tomorrow I will start another one and give it 6 months. If that one works as well, I will consider myself to be advanced enough to buy a new cheese fridge and other stuff so I can start playing with bleu cheeses. (Bleu cheese spores are really sneaky and if you make just one little mistake, they will contaminate the “cheese cave” so it is better to have a separate cave for them.)

(Don’t be too impressed about the fancy name, my cheese cave is a dorm sized fridge with external temp controls to fiddle with and keep the temp higher than the fridge is designed to do.)

I laundered. I made Asian BBQ chicken with asparagus and 'shrooms. I had a Sazarac. Life is good.

“Outside? The squirrel is undercooked and underseasoned, I had to fight a trash panda for a pizza crust, and a coyote ate Eight Toe Bob. One Star.” - Spot

Maybe. But the my hat is more “Michael Collins” than “Fidel Castro”.

Nettie, sorry about the disrupion, but hopefully it’s a one time thing. Verses my 5 different floods.

Nothing wrong with that.

Bleah, and meh. (Not sure if we can be friends anymore.)

Man, I hope so.

Oh! It sorta-maybe might could happen tomorrow. I was supposed to close, but someone with an Early-out shift wanted to trade. I shrugged & said “sure.” It’s a difference of maybe 3 hours, so it’s not like I’m out that much money, but Early-out shifts are, I dunno, kinda fun.

I spent nearly the entire 9 hours in front of the drive-thru window (plus another hour to close) and I like to think I was as friendly and professional with the last customer of the night as the first.
We certainly pride ourselves that the last pizza of the night looks just as good as the first …

Okay, story time:

There was the guy who was so busy flirting with me that he dropped his damn pizza. Not outside onto the ground, thank god, but it definitely slid off his hand onto the floor of his car.

Heh.

Alright, end of the shift, it’s like two minutes till one. We’ve had a moderate “panic hour” (the last hour of the night, especially weekends, gets a noticeable bump, as people go, “Ah, shit, they close soon!”) and we’re wiping things up.
Phone rings.
Manager says, “No way, no more orders tonight. We’re done.”
One of the Oven Masters - who has years of experience and is amaze-balls, able to juggle four or sometimes five pizzas crammed into all 4 ovens (I can maybe do two pizzas, 2 ovens total) but he really is something of a goofball - swears if the phone rings again, he’s gonna pick up and say it’s Pizza Hut.
We all laugh, my manager says no way.
He gets a serious look on his face and says, yeah, he will.

I never know when he’s joking … :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

The phone rings again.

To my absolute astonishment, homeboy answers the phone just like he said he would:

“Pizza Hut … nobody out-huts the hut!”

He said the guy on the line was like, “Naw man, you playin’, this is Scribs” and starts arguing and trying to order!

My jaw was on the floor y’all, that man is my HERO tonight.

Well, Monkey has curled up in my lap but I do need to rustle up some sort of meal.

Good night, everyone.

ETA: almost forgot. Behold: the Sausage-Ball Snail!

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 45 (BRRR!) Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 75 and N.O.S. It’s either Fall or False Fall. One never knows for sure round these parts. The big item on today’s agenda is deheathenization. Morning Prayer with me as Officiant for those playin’ along at home. Then it will be back to da cave for sammiches, nappage, and the usual slothful inactivity that is our wont.

shoe oven guy is a man of his word. He said he would and he did! Also the snausage-ball snail is cute and I am sure tasty.

Boo The final score was 51-13. It was 44-13 at the end of the third quarter and that’s when I went to bed. Also, Notre Dame lost. I like it when that happens. WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!

Now I need more caffeine and to feeed rumbly tummy. Then purtification for deheathenization must commence.

Happy Sunday Y’all!

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off today. the usual cleaning and handegg.
In a bit of sad news, my dog-doption is on hold for 35 days, as the shelter is closed to due an out break of canine flu. 3 pups have died from it. :frowning:

Mmmmmm…Scribs-scargot

Chilly morning here - 46° outside and 68° inside - I did leave 4 windows open a little bit. We might see low 60s today, tho by Thursday, we’re promised mid-70s.

FCD asked me to help him move some shelves in his shop - it won’t be bad except that at the moment, the shelves hold all manner of aluminum sheet and bar and scrap, I’ll need gloves to protect my delicate digits as we move the metal off the shelves to a cart or another pile. Then disassemble, carry, and reassemble the shelves (8’ long X 2’ deep) and put the aluminum back on the shelves in their new home. But since it’s cool today, at least it won’t be a sweaty task.

Once that’s done, I have 2 more crocheted Peeps bunnies to assemble and stuff. I’m almost out of stuffing, so they may be the last critters I make. Which is fine - I have a pretty good pile of stuff to sell. Unfortunately, the long-range forecast is calling for rain on Saturday. Most of this fundraiser has to be outside - like the bouncy castle and the food trucks and the obstacle course. The time we had to do it indoors, it sucked. Fingers crossed…

This made me wonder - does your retirement include free/discounted flights? Yeah, I know, I’m nosy…

My sorta 50th reunion was this past summer, tho it was combined with the class of '73, as they’ve done for the last few years. I did not attend. I went to the 40-something reunion that was also combined with several other classes. They had 2 live bands in a venue that was more suitable to elevator music - conversation was impossible when the bands were rocking! I spent much of my time in the vestibule where one didn’t have to yell as loud. Apart from the couple of friends I’ve stayed in touch with, I spoke only to one guy who I absolutely didn’t remember, even when I dug out my old yearbook. I have nothing in common with those people and I’m sure none remember me. Never again.

Toughest for me was transitioning from bi-weekly to monthly checks. For pretty much my entire working life, I was paid every other Firday. Now it’s SS on the 4th Wednesday and pension on the last working day of the month. Then FCD started drawing SS, and that’s 2nd Wednesday. In theory, it’s still every other week, sorta, but a tad jarring nonetheless. But it appears in our account and I pay VISA (which pays all our bills except the mortgage) and life is good.

Speaking of bills, I got an email reminding me that the balance of our January cruise is due on the 22nd. I’ll put it on VISA on the 21st. We’re getting close - time to start making lists…

I also have questions for my “agent” at Princess Cruise Lines, tho she wasn’t responsive the last time I messaged her. I’m going to make a list of niggling little things I want to know before we go, including about the trip insurance. I need to know if the airfare is also covered should we have to cancel. That’s a big chunk of cash to have to lose, so I don’t want to. I suppose I could check American Airlines’ policy on cancellation.

Anyway, I crashed early last night and had a good sleep, so I’m ready for the day. And since resuming my smarter-eating program, I’ve shed 14# and now comfortably fit into jeans that were way too tight, so yay!

Speaking of jeans, I ordered 2 pair from Penney’s and they came on Firday. I tried them on - they’re almost 3" too long!! Dammit. I hate hemming jeans. That’s what I get for not ordering “Short.” At least I have a good sewing machine so the fix won’t be too awful. Still…

Oh, yeah, Happy Sunday.

Forgot to mention that when I got home, at precisely 1:59 a.m. who should I see ambling around my yard, but my little visitor from the other night. Same size, gotta be “my” possum.

I called out a cheerful “Hello, friend-o!” into the darkness, and once again realized that, should a neighbor witness my behavior (which for them would be out of context) they’d think I was absolutely fruit loops.

Aw, no! I hope your chosen pup emerges unscathed.

Well played.

Mornin’ all. It’s just post-dawn here and the sun will emerge from the cloud bank on the eastern horizon soon. Thus puttin’ an end to my balconatin’ til evening. Cooler today, 77/25 now (Brrr!) on the way to 89/32 and no clouds at all over the land. The stars are long gone, but were pretty when I first got here. We have lots of light pollution, so “the stars” is usually a dozen-ish tops. Which is just very sad.

Dressed for beach and will go in awhile when it warms up a tad. Just about hit my vitamin UV limit yesterday, so today must be a bit circumspect.

Yeah Jane & FCM the cashflow will be a bit of a bucking bronco until maybe mid Dec. My pension plus survivor’s SS together represent about a 90% gross pay cut from my usual W2. Probably about 80% cut net of the tax differences. I used to make more than we spent by some decent margin. Now it’s the opposite by a hefty margin. The shortfall will be made up from cashflow from investments, but exactly how much how and when is all TBD. Fully planned for, but still unsettled and a bit unsettling.

I had to laugh at 4 cars per hour constituting “constant traffic”. 4 cars per minute pass my place when things are quiet at 5am. One of the fun things about SDMB in general is seeing just how differently other people live; people you’d have zero chance to meet IRL.

Her Ladyship’s favorites almost always involve women plotting to kill men. Hmmm.

That is huge news. Congrats! After 6 months, how firm and sharp would be typical? It’ll be a success no doubt, I’m just wondering what sort of success? I’ll set a reminder to ask you about it every day between 5 & 6 months from now. Is it ready yet, Mom? Is it ready? Huh, huh? How 'bout now?

Glad to see Shoe survived Long Night and brought some funnies for us. Great flirting story. Back in the day I used to regularly comment to my wife “I’m sorry Dear. I couldn’t think; there were breasts in the room.” Her Ladyship would not find that comment amusing. Sigh.

Good luck w GC and early out. Leaves more time for him to still be awake.

Years ago my wife moved her solo law office into our home. And we pointed her office’s 800-number at our home phone. At that time New Mexico had just one area code. The statewide number for Pizza Hut in NM was, say 345-6789. And was advertised all over NM: “Just dial 345-6789”. Of course lots of less than brilliant or less than sober New Mexicans dialed 1-800-345-6789. And our home phone would ring.

It actually didn’t happen as often as you’d expect. And most folks would take our explanation, apologize, hang up and we’d never hear from them again. But about weekly somebody Would. Not. Listen. Cumulatively we took a lot of pizza orders until we decided that 800 number was more trouble than it was worth. Such fun.

That sausage snail is great. Except for the “horns” it looks a lot like the shrimp on our app last night.

Congrats to Swampy for what’ll doubtless be an excellent spell o’ preachin’ the Word. I ‘spose you could could do a silly and preach a bunch o’ hellfire, brimstone, n’ Damnation then when somebody objects, act all confused and say “This isn’t the First Baptist Church?” or whatever’s the name of your arch-rival church down the street. “Oops. Sorry. Gotta run, I’m late for the service!”

Doggio enjoy the day off and handegg.

FCM: Congrats on wrapping up the crocheting. The shelving move sounds daunting. Whole lotta ways to get your arms sliced on sheet metal; gloves are only part of the needed protection. Double congrats on the 14# loss, even if you didn’t also grow 3" of height. Willowy is next year!

Yes, our retirement bennies include unlimited free travel on us, and heavily discounted travel on damn near every other airline in the world. Plus cheap cruises and inclusive resorts and such. The bad news is all that is purely standby and the whole travel industry has gotten very, very good at selling the very last seat or cabin or hotel room over the internet at the last minute. Meaning you can make all your plans, get to the airport and be stranded there, or left behind at the dock or … Beggars can’t be choosers. But you can score some stellar deals if you want to go to less popular places at less popular times of year. Brussels in gray snowy Feb? Sure. Paris in warm & sunny May? Fuggeddaboudit!

I’m good with that sort of irregularity, but Her Ladyship much less so. We can still get a decent price on actual guaranteed reservations and when she and I travel together that’ll probably be the plan.

Reunions:
For folks who live elsewhere, IMO reunions are as much about seeing how the old haunts have changed as it is about the event proper and the people there. You wouldn’t otherwise make the trek, but once you do that’s a big part of the value.

Given the advent of FB & such, I wonder if reunions, like so many other in-person social activities will wither and die? Will the typical HS class of 2023 be holding a 10th in 2033 or a 30th in 2053? Methinks likely not. I also suspect that HS reunions were bigger when HS was the final educational attainment of 90+% of the populace. Now that over half of young adults go on to college, even if many don’t exactly graduate, HS graduation seems like much less of a mental and practical milestone in life to be re-commemorated later.

For sure it’s friggin’ infuriating to attend an event that’s meant for camaraderie, conversation, and social, but somebody hires a band who thinks they’re playing a concert where they are the reason for the crowd gathering. Same thing with live “background” music in restaurants that becomes “foreground” music. Gaah! It’s definitely not easier with hearing loss and hearing aids, that’s for sure.

It’s warmed up a bit, the sun is high enough, so time to beach!

Happy Sundaying all!

Afternoon, mumpers! It’s a balmy 20c/69f with a predicted high of 21c/70f, and cloudy. Weather app says “Oh good. It’s super fucking cloudy outside”. Except it’s not, it’s sunny and there’s quite a bit of blue sky.

metal mouse Big City Station only has 12 platforms so it’s not massive and they’re all connected by a footbridge so if you’re a savvy commuter, you can scoot from one end to the other in a couple of minutes. My rail app tells me which platform I need, and I always make sure I’m travelling in the very back part of the train from campus as that door opens right by the stairs  Unfortunately, campus is on the cross-city line which almost always runs late despite the fact there’s virtually no other trains using that route.

Pilot we have multiple train operators using the same routes/track etc, so there’s a lot of scheduling gods to placate! I need two trains to get to irk, and that can involve five or six different operators depending on which train I manage to get on.

Doggio sorry to hear about dog-doption woes, I hope the shelter opens up again soon without any further losses.

Taters I know what you mean about Polar’s water bowl, perhaps someone else could do that for you? When we lost Ophie last year, it was really hard to deal with things that were specifically hers, part of it felt like we were removing all traces of her from the house. I still have a few packs of food that we bought for her, it somehow doesn’t seem right to give them to the foster cats (I already know Shadow won’t eat any of it) but at the same time, it is daft hanging on to them for no good reason.

Seanette sorry to hear about the disruption, it is such a pain but hopefully the results will be worth the upheaval.

My day is half over already…achieved very little apart from one load of laundry, changed the bedding (that’ll go in the wash next), 'im indoors ran the rollsuck round the house accompanied by much colourful language as various items conspired to make the job more difficult, and I’ve had a bath. The afternoon and evening plans involve sofa time and slothage because the irk merry-go-round starts again tomorrow.

The thing that’s the most difficult for me is starting spend the money we’ve been socking away for retirement. Because we’re in retirement and that’s what we saved/invested for. It’s a tough mind-set to change. I feel guilty for not saving (even tho a portion of SS/pension still goes into our savings account.) New paradigms are challenging!

Pfffft - I’ll be thrilled with less-lumpy!

FCD is up and we’re both clean and clad. He’s having breakfast and despite my efforts to convince him to wait till tomorrow, we’ll be heading out shortly to begin moving stuff. Then on a future weekend, we’ll be moving the wood rack from the garage to the wall in the shed that will be vacated by the shelf-move. Feel free to drop by and share in the fun!!!

You are a far braver woman than I. Ordering jeans online? What, do you buy bras that way, too?

I’ve gone into stores, selected two or three jeans of the same size & style, from the same brand (just different color washes) and still had them fit differently.

I read that the tolerance in overseas factories can be quite loose, as they’re often cutting dozens of pieces of fabric all at the same time (stacked under the cutting mechanism) so there’s a lot of room for error.

Still, too long (and therefore hem-able) is better than too short.

Last batch, yes. I just ordered more of what I already had.

At one point, I had maybe 8 or 9 pairs of jeans in my closet, all supposedly the same size, and many the same manufacturer style, and they ranged from pull-on-and-off-without-unzipping to can’t-zip-even-when-lying-down. But since these were from Penney’s and there’s one near Daughter’s house, if they didn’t fit, I could just take them back when I took Tobias home. Luckily, they fit, except for the length.

I really wish there was a size standard for women’s clothing, but the need for vanity sizing is strong. Can you imagine the outrage if the size 8 you’ve worn “forever” was suddenly defined as size 12?? The very idea!!! :open_mouth: How sad that some women define their worth by a little tag in their clothing. I’d rather be comfortable than attempt to squeeze my butt into jeans with a lower number on the tag.

I don’t know if we can be friends. (missred, who grew up RC in northern Indiana)

The last jeans that I bought online were two pair, same jeans, just different colors. One pair needed a 1" hem. The dark wash pair, however, needed 4" lopped off and then hemmed. I quickly learned from thrift store jeans and that experience that I needed to order women’s petite from that company.

Nice going on the cheddar JtC!

It was a chilly 41F when I walked Nelson this morning. The heat is on now.

Other than the usual Sunday chores, not much shaking at CasaRoja today.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Cheddar and blue cheese are my favourites! I hope they work out well.

Yeah, that took some adjusting. Then the Thrift Savings Plan (the Government’s 401k-like program) that I invested in pays me on the tenth and of course most of the bills come in the last half of the month, so it does keep me interested in the book-keeping.

And what’s wrong with that, I’d like to know… :upside_down_face: :upside_down_face:

As for jeans and reunions, I’ve found my best fits come from Duluth Trading (no local Penney’s around here and I’m wary of buying pants online) and I skipped my 50th Reunion just liked I skipped all the previous ones (with a class of 900, the chances I would meet someone I actually knew/liked was going to be to small for a 800-mile trip).

JtC, congratulations on the Cheddar success story. Sure you will be cutting the cheese soon.

FCM, I know what you mean; I still almost obsessively watch my budget and how much I’m running up my credit card, while I have money sitting around earning pennies in interest, but deciding to spend any of it makes me thing twice..or more. Happy shelf re-locating!

boo fae, thanks for the info. Been awhile since I took a train for a real-life station, nearly missed a connection in Melbourne because I couldn’t find which platform I had to go to (a guy working there got me sorted out).

Pilot, love that they would order a pizza when you were telling them it wasn’t Pizza Hut…did any call back to complain they didn’t get their pizza? And absolutely loved the story of the aquatic birds floor show for dinner.

doggio, haz a sad for the lost pups; be patient.

shoe, sometimes a Oven Master gotta do what an Over Master gotta do–nice story.

flyboy, glad you conquered the tides. And I always thought falling out of the kayak was the norrnal way to exit (least for me…

Well, ended up doing five loads of laundry last evening, the temperature is down to 47F now (supposed to reach 70F later in the day) and I have ventured forth early to procure my Sunday New York Times (a rare and precious find here in N. Ali-bama). Will head out for my early Sunday dinner in a couple of hours and then wait for it to warm up some before performing mowage. Otherwise a slothful day watching tackleball. Everyone have a good one.

'Yakwife says, ‘There’s no graceful way to get out of a kayak.’ Remember that both of my knees are rubbish. I can’t just put a leg over and stand up. If I’m on the beach, I need to put my right knee down (which can be problematic because of the rocks) and lever myself up by holding the sides of the kayak. An easier (and more graceful) way of getting out is to put both legs over the left side in water that comes at least halfway up my shins. Then I can more or less just stand up. Yesterday I think the water was just a little too deep, and the kayak pushed away from me whilst I was in the process of standing.

Good morning.

It is 56F, cloudy and slightly foggy outside. The expected high is 76F with partly cloudy skies. The rain moves in tomorrow, so the lawn will receive a haircut in a couple of hours.

Yes, exactly. I have perfectly good treats which I can’t make myself throw away. There is still doggy ice cream in the freezer. I will probably end up giving that stuff to a friend who has dogs, but right now, I just can’t do it. Additionally, the last of the chicken we cooked for Polar is in the fridge. I can’t eat it; I just can’t. It will have to be trashed today, and I feel bad about that too. Someone asked if someone else could take care of the water bowl; that only someone is my husband, but he’s just as heartbroken as me. The final thing is washing off Polar’s cooling mat, which is still folded up for the moment. That one is just too hard to deal with right now.

I have never attended a single class reunion and do not have any interest in going. Ironically, I received a note on Classmates.com (I don’t know why I still have that subscription), from an old classmate stating she ran across my photo, and it just made her so happy. I was all :face_with_raised_eyebrow:. We were friendly from junior high through high school, but we weren’t besties, and I think we only hung out once or twice. I dunno, maybe it was totally innocent, but it was odd for me.

nettie, I’m sorry about the disruption to your lives. Personally, I think the rent credit thing is BS, mainly because you wouldn’t be spending money on a hotel room if they weren’t doing that. So, how is that helping you any, especially if the hotel costs more per night than your rent broken out by night?

I can’t bring myself to buy pants online anymore. I tried twice, and both resulted in ill-fitting pants. No more. Tops are hit or miss, and bras were a failure too, even though they were the same brand as I already had at home.

Well, I suppose I should finish my coffee and get the last of the dishes in the dishwasher. Everyone take care!

Youngest son and brood coming over later today, which is always good. The eldest is in university, so I’ll grill him about how he’s spending my money.

French toast this morning. Sourdough slices and orange zest. Best FT ever.

A bit stiff in the knee this morning after yesterday’s mild exercises. Rest today and hit it again tomorrow.

Onward to the Sunday crossword puzzles!

And we’re done! I did as much of the lifting as I could, since FCD’s back is hurting. There’s a buttload of aluminum in the back of the truck, awaiting sorting and stowing. The shelf unit was a double, so we removed one side, then carried an assembled unit from the shed to the shop. FCD attached it to the wall, then we reassembled the entire unit.

And then we quit. He really is hurting. I’m glad he decided to take a break.

I’ve got a pork roast in the crockpot with onions and celery. Later I’ll add carrots and spud chunks, so supper is planned. I thought I was pulling a hunk of chuck roast out of the freezer - the label just said “Roast” - I’ll know better in the future. Still, poke roast, beef roast, whatever!

Time to finish the last 2 bunnies. Or maybe I’ll make some more fingerless gloves. I need to check my inventory. Back to the yarn!

I spent a chunk of last night researching down comforters. Two years ago I stored my Target not down comforter in a non breathable storage bin and it stinks and I refuse to use it. The other blanket is too heavy on my body. I don’t understand how people can sleep with weighted blankets, but maybe they don’t have hot flashes…. I chose a comforter from Land’s End. It should be here late this week.

Got outta bed at 8:45 today. I want to ride but I also want to stay home and watch teevee and eat potato chips….
