Older cat suddenly starts smelling bad and is far more lethagic, is it close to dying?

Thanks for the update, although I’m sorry this was the news. It sounds like everything happened very quickly, and she had a wonderful life.

I’m so sorry. What was your kitty’s name, @Asuka?

I’m very sorry for your loss. Thanks for coming back to update us.

If he does: please don’t write him off immediately. Cats with feline leukemia often live for some time, some of them for years, without having any significant symptoms. I had one who got three good years after diagnosis.

So sorry about this loss, Asuka. I hope your other kitty is taking it well.

Oh, so sorry about your kitteh, blessed be to you both and best wishes for your other kitteh being healthy and well.

Aw, so sorry. Sounds like it was relatively quick at least.

FLV is not an immediate death sentence for sure. I always vaccinate my cats, but as a birthday gift I took a friend’s 5-year-old cat to the vet for a long-overdue vet check up - and it turns out kitty is FLV positive. However, the vet was fairly reassuring. Her main concern was that the cat not infect others, but she said he himself might very well have many good years ahead.

I’m sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss - the end usually comes quite quickly with FELV and at that stage there is little that can be done. If you are aware of FELV status beforehand at least you can be prepared and make that decision a couple of days earlier. It can be hard to know when to let go and in any event the hardest part can be wondering if you could have done better - the answer is that you did your best, and its the same for everyone.

My condolences. It’s very difficult to lose a pet. We had two dachshunds for 13 years (Luc died four days short of exactly a year since Shanni had died). They were rescues, though, and were probably about 3 years old when we got them. They both had long lives, and Shanni had epilepsy, so she lived a good while on medication until it finally stopped working. We were going to hold off on getting a new dog, but our rescue had an older boy that we adopted only about a month after Luc passed. That was a year ago October, and now in the last month Max has been diagnosed with adenocarcinoma. No hope. He’s doing o.k. on a handful of medicines (thank dog he gobbles down his pills in a dog food meatball, so no issues there). But long story short…you never know how long you’ll have them. You just loved them while they’re with you.

PS: I can understand the reluctance to go to the emergency vet if your regular vet is not available. Max’s diagnosis and original care was a $5K bill. It’s hard.
