Oldest Recorded person

Now I remember why I had such an overwhelming urge to post “Og” in reply to this thread.

It is probably is depending on your point of view, one of the Scorpion King’s immediate successors or immediate predecessors.

Some one might correct me, but I believe the earliest believed name of anyone is King Scorpion I, believed to be one of the Scorpion King’s predecessors. He is certainly historical as his tomb is known and there were hieroglyphs of his name and of some of his deeds.

I meant either two years ago or '09, couldn’t decide which to post, and portmanteaued it into that inflated figure – appropriate for a thread on earliest history, no?

“known to have existed.” i suppose human remains are more reliable than human relics.

The OP specifically asks for a “recorded named person”.

i got it from another site! Oldie Oldenstien who is sad to pre-date the pharaoh Djoser (2,600 BC to whom the step pyramid is attributed.)

it’s tough finding a named person before 3,000BC.

Narmer was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh of the Early Dynastic Period (c. 32nd century BCE). He is thought to be the successor to the Protodynastic pharaohs Scorpion (or Selk) and/or Ka, and he is considered by some to be the unifier of Egypt and founder of the First Dynasty, and therefore the first pharaoh of unified Egypt.
From Wikipedia:

I meant Narmer aka Menes…

I guess it depends how specific you want the documentation to be.
Scorpion is allegedly named from the scorpion symbol on his (and predecessors?) tomb. It may or may not have been his name. Namrmer/Menes appears to be that guy’s official name.
3100BC.

Unless Chinese writing and historical record predates this, I would assume this is as far back as a written record will go.

Even with oral history, the whole Troy/Odessy thing IIRC dates to about 1200BC and was not written down until about 400BC. Abraham, who is likely the earliest character in the bible who seems historical than mythical, still only dates by most consensus to about 2000BC or later.

That’s exactly how I read it and replied to it in my head.

This reminds me of a question I asked(or wanted to ask) years ago. Who is the “furthest back” identifiable person we have a photo of? I mean the person with the earliest birth date, whose name we know, and we have a photo of them.

I don’t remember if we ever got an answer.

Since the time of the original posting, the pre Dynastic Pharoah Iry-Hor has been confirmed as been real. Is there anyone else?

It’s a selfie.

ETA: Not quite what you asked, I now realise. Still interesting, anyway.

Who is the oldest Egyptian mummy, whose remains still exist, and whose name is known, with a few facts to back up what is known?

It used to be me, but then two guys took over, and now I only rank 3rd place. :frowning:

If everyone is busy answering questions the OP did not ask, can I just add that the oldest recorded speech is from 1860, from the Frechman Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville (1817-1879)? It’s a wave pattern that could only be converted to real sound again recently (impossible without computers): Phonautograph - Wikipedia
