"Oldest Teacher" retires at 104 years old. Hats off, sir

This is a teacher’s teacher
He’s been fighting ignorance since 1926! My hat is off to such dedication. (If I had a hat)

Really puts his age in perspective. :wow:

I was going to make some snarky comment about having to work so long to get enough retirement points that he wouldn’t starve after he left, but then I saw he took a $1/year stipend. Wow. That’s dedicated!

And here I was planning to retire from teaching at 62, and feeling all virtuous about it! Hats off to you, Ray. Have an apple!

I was going to make a wise crack about how I thought maybe I had this guy for English in 1976 when he was merely old. But then I read the link and he really sounds like quite an amazing person, so I’ll just add my kudos. Maybe we can sponsor him an SDMB membership?

What a great idea! Hey, for all I know he has one.
Ray? Ray Crist? Are you out there?

Wouldn’t that be amazing to have someone that age, and still coherent, posting here? I’m sure his stories are downright fascinating. Let’s track him down!

I’m all for tracking the guy down. I think he would be a great SDMB asset.

However, I think the resident offenderati would absolutely freak out over a former director of the Manhattan Project contaminating this pristine liberal space.

Chemistry? Don’t they mean alchemy?

But wow, just wow.

Y’know, I really hate the whole 1920’s SDR thing, but if ever there was an appropriate place to mention them…

Mention them? Ole Ray just might have invented them!

He’s in my backyard, pretty much. He lives in my town!

Robin

So drop him a line and ask if we could sponsor him on the SDMB! I’d love to exchange thoughts with a man that…liferich.

Wow.

What an amazing guy. A person like this needs to be cloned.

And he taught at the same college that one of our best friends teaches at now, Dickinson.

I sent an e-mail to the newspaper that carried the original story. I explained SDMB then I asked if they could pass on our invitation.
We’ll see.

Wow.

THIS is loving what you do.

And I can’t help but guess he probably had to listen to quite a few cracks from people pronouncing his name a particular way and remarking on “Crist” teaching at “Messiah” College
(Myself I had an Econ prof at JHU actually surnamed Christ who was also a Manhattan Project man)
JRD

If anyone is still interested in inviting Mr Crist to join us, I was sent the proper phone #s to contact the newspaper that first printed the story. They apparently don’t have their own e-mail.

According to Jay Leno last night, the teacher didn’t retire, he got fired.
Seems they found a guy in India who is only 103 and he’ll work for less money.
At any rate…hope you guys actually track him down and get him to join! That would be really cool to have him as a member and get his thoughts on a multitude of things!
