Ole Miss can't repel mascots of this magnitude!

The University of Mississippi voted to replace their old mascot, colonel Reb. But…

IT’S A TRAP!

In addition to the TMZ story linked above, check out the grass roots campaign at http://notatrap.org/

The PC people win again.

I hope they’re happy. Colonel Reb was a part of my youth and upbringing.

That’s not a mascot, it’s something you fry up in a pan.

Their new mascot is semen?

[sub]i thought the navy had dibs on that…[/sub]

I’m betting the new mascot would be more likely to ensure a lawsuit.

I mean, wouldn’t they need permission from Lucasfilms to use one of their characters?

Lucasfilm has commented on it, actually.

[QUOTE=Lucasfilm]
Lucasfilm is flattered that our Star Wars fans at the University of Mississippi are considering electing Admiral Ackbar as their mascot. The last time we checked in with Admiral Ackbar he was leading the Rebel Alliance Fleet on a critical mission so it will be difficult for him to show up for the games!

Oh, I bet FARK is loving this.

Cite.

That’s what happens when you let students vote. I think it’d be a nifty mascot, though. I’m not a Star Wars fan, but it’s something different.

Presumably they’d have to pay for rights to use the Admirals image, seems like it’d be cheaper to use something in the public domain.

It’s a trap!

Right, but the University of Oregon’s mascot is Donald Duck. It’d create plenty of exposure.

Well, they DID want a rebel.

Well done, sir.

Merged this thread into A Monkey With a Gun’s thread from a few days ago.

I vote for “The Fighting Midichlorians!”

The proposed mascot seems like he’d be more at home at Harvey Mudd, RPI or maybe Cal Poly.

The Millennium Falcons

I can understand that it was part of your upbringing and there’s a sense of nostalgia there, but lots of things were part of people’s upbringings that, upon reflection, are kind of vile.

Is it that you don’t understand the objection to what “Reb” refers to that leads you to dismiss this as “the PC people” winning again, or is it that you do understand but just don’t care about the connotation? Is it wrong of people to think glorifying the, you know, act of war against the country in furtherance of slavery might not be a good idea?

Not after the merge though.

I think that would be great!

Of course, I went to UC Santa Cruz, so I’m a fan of offbeat mascots.

Go Banana Slugs!
