Is it normal for extra virgin olive oil to give a “burning” sensation when swallowed plain, i am using “La Espanola” olive oil from Spain, i used “Dona Elena” before and did not notice this rather unpleasant irritation.
Extra virgin olive oil can be quite peppery - like wines they vary in flavour depending on vintage and origin. So it’s very likely “La Espanola” has a particularly peppery flavour which you’re susceptible to find unpleasant. Do you find other spicy foodstuffs unpleasant?
OB
Yes, there often is a little spicy/burning note. You could experiment to find a milder oil.
However, if you really like the taste of extra virgin olive oil (aside from that spicy note), there’s a pretty good chance you’ll probably soon get used to it, and eventually be disappointed when your olive oil is too mild.
(BTW, cooking questions usually go in Cafe Society)
May I ask why are you drinking oil straight?
Back Home in Switzerland, i used to get Home Made Olive Oil from my Greek Neighbor, which i was recomended to take as a Food supplement/medicine.
Plain olives, without anything done to them, are extremely bitter. This can give proper olive oil a peppery tang which many people like. Change brands if you don’t. And for god’s sake, go back to Greek oil - it’s the best in the world.
Not only that, but the burning sensation is apparently a good thing.
So if you’re looking for a natural alternative to astroglide;)
Yeah, but then it wouldn’t be virgin olive oil.
Generally speaking, the greener your olive oil, the more likely it is to produce that peppery sensation. If it’s unpleasant to you, look for one that is more yellow in tone. Yellower olive oils are produced from blacker, riper olives and are more mellow and buttery.
And some folks do drink a bit of straight olive oil for its alleged cholesterol-lowering properties. They also sip it at olive oil tastings to observe the differences between types before they buy.
Someone recently gave me a bottle of Extra Extra Virgin Olive Oil and I noticed it had a peppery flavor…but I’ve never noticed this with Extra Virgin.
Btw, does anyone know what the difference is between regular olive oil, virgin, extra virgin and extra extra virgin? Is this some marketing gimic or is there a differnce?
We all know you’re joking, but let Mama Doper remind the viewing audience that no oil based lubricant, from Vaseline to Olive Oil, should be used with a latex condom. Eats microscopic holes in the sucker before you can say, “Weren’t you supposed to get your period on Thursday?”
But that’s like folks thinking that sex with a virgin will cure you of AIDS: you get a cholesterol benefit if you avoid unhealthy oils and cook with olive oil, but eating deep-fried-in-lard-pork and then slugging olive oil is a faster road to artery hell. I know people who claim that bread with salt and oil is “good for number two” and whose sole source of fiber appears to be
bread, of course. What did you think would be?
I’ll be the first one to laud olive oil left, right and sideways, but drinkng it - no, that’s not what it’s for.
The extra virgin is about the cool pressing vs some-from-hot-pressing, iirc. The virgin means “no second pressing”.
