Olives checks in, but she doesn't check out.

Hey, I speak Espanish, whaddaya know. “Ola mi chikita con tika-masala”

Espaniol on the other hand…not a smidgen.

I speak Esperanto… does that count?

I would have to hope so.

Uno dos tres quattro?

THAT’s what I was forgetting. Thanks, Biblio.

Olive, please proceed down the hall to room 101, just follow the strange sounds.

Great Scot, that was him? I thought that was a wild monkey trying to belt out O Sole Mio through a kazoo.

Bonvolu alsendi la pordiston? Lausajne estas rano en mia bideo!

The Great Lonk is mighty. The Great Lonk is well-equipped. The Great Lonk likes whiskey. Do not meddle in the affairs of The Great Lonk. It makes him soggy and hard to light.

That was a kazoo?!!

Ah, the pen of your aunt is in the garden, eh? Jen la solvo, jen la polvo, jen la mitigita Volvo! Un, deux, trois, bitte!

“Sheep101.info”?
<snerk>

Bitte?

I had no idea you knew how to cook Korean food…

Welcome, olives!

Duly noted. The great Magical Merlin found here.

Whatever you do, don’t forget to add the vodka before it sets.

Every language counts.

I am honored by this. It may indicate that you don’t agree with me, which means I’ll probably learn a lot from you. I learn the most from people I disagree with.

I adore Epsanish, and would happily read any cites you offered! No matter how much I practice, I will probably never feel I am as good at speaking Spanish as i want to be. I’m jealous you get to use it all the time.

Yep, March 4th is my birthday. “Olives” is cheesy Christy-speak for “I love you”, and with the username you can’t help but get the image of little olives in a row, marching forth.

Regarding my research project, it’s actually kind of an unusual concept. We’re studying face-ism–facial prominence-- in the media, specifically photographs that candidates choose to represent themselves politically. My director has already done research on this phenomenon in the United States and she has found that women on average tend to show more of their whole bodies in professional photographs than men do–men tend to take up most of the photograph with their faces and show very little of the rest of their bodies. You’re probably thinking–so what?–so was I-- but the director of the project has already done some interesting research that reveals facial prominence is not only an influence on how competent the person is judged to be, but it is also a predictor of certain behaviors – for example, women who show more facial prominence tend to vote in favor of women’s rights issues more than those who don’t. It’s something seemingly benign that turns out to be quite complex. My director is curious how this translates from a global perspective, and so we have each been assigned to a South-American country–mine being Venezuela. I just started the project… I’ll certainly let you know how it goes. I’m especially excited because we may have the opportunity to report our findings at a conference in South America. Pretty neat opportunity if you ask me.

I am militantly pro-LGBT/social justice in general. It’s on par with racism to me.

Uh oh. Don’t read my comment in the pit about the superiority of Linux.

I seriously used to stress out about people’s opinions on the internet. I’ve learned you can’t please all of the people all of the time. You give great advice! Thank you!

Thank you all! I am so pleased by this warm reception! Thanks so much. Lonk is unbearably cute.

Welcome to inside joke 1563-7b, which reads:

You spelled “a lot” correctly - you are aces in my book.

Welcome to the funhouse.

olives, I thought of something your teacher may like.

One of my homeland’s local newspapers, Diario de Navarra, celebrated its 100th anniversary last year. They’ve recently uploaded all their old issues: 100 years worth of Spanish newspapers! It’s pay-to-use but still, it may be a good resource. You can access the old issues through the main page (click on hemeroteca, top right under the banner ad) or here.

Oh, how cool! Thanks a lot, Nava!

Oh heavens, I read that wrong the first time.

And still no kitty picture…
:dubious:

But welcome anyway!!!

Yes, there was…

tweeeeeeeeet!

Flag on the play…Over-zealous newbie harrassment without having read every word in the entire thread…2 goat penalty…1st down.

As a guest and (sorta) new member, I think my contract explicitly forbids me from issuing a formal welcome, but I do want to give a shout out as a fellow Wolverine and former Ann Arborite.

“I’m surprised they didn’t assess a squid on that play, Mike!”

“Well, Ike, according to the 2006 rewrite of the Skimming Middle Posts rule, the only way the ref could have assessed a squid would have been if Greebo had accidentally misread the OP to say that olives had neglected to post pics of her ferret. This was changed because of the three-week-long 17-page Pit thread in September 2005 between danceswithcats and ferretherder over whether her ferrets had accidentally gotten into his cats or his cats had accidentally gotten into her ferrets, and whether or not they now had to create a new taste sensation because of it. If I recall correctly, they decided that these were two really lousy tastes that went really lousy together and called it a day. Back to you, Ike.”

“And that’s why we keep a position open solely for extreme rules geeks, folks…”
