Is the media forbidden from breaking news of gold medal winners until the (taped) event has aired? And, just how much of the Bejing Olympics is live? I guess this begs me to ask what are the hours of the Olympic events (local time)? Obviously, the TV airing of events (some live, some not) has me all confused.
The handball events are played all throughout the day, I’m guessing so some team always plays at a time that suits CET.
Iceland (8 hour difference) has so far played at 6 AM, 12,45 AM and 12,45 PM GMT.
And yes - we didn’t get much work done during the 12,45 PM game
Not sure how much of an answer that was, but that’s what I’ve got.
Olympic coverage is found all over the web, including websites of the stations covering the games. You don’t specify on what part of the planet you live, but in the US the NBC olympics site gives you up to the minute coverge, as does ESPN. The various ESPN channels will give you crawlers with the latest information, but, of course, they cannot show clips of it until after it airs (they use still photos from the Associated Press). The NBC link above has some details of when events are upcoming.
Also, the above site has streaming coverage of many lesser watched events live (e.g., I watched some of the air pistol competition at work).
Not at all. You can find it online.
NBC affiliates usually try to avoid mentioning results, but others can do whatever they want. As long as they’re not broadcasting pictures of the event, no one can stop them.
All of it.
It’s just not shown on TV live. NBC did get the Chinese to hold events in the morning so it would be in prime time on the east coast (but they’re still on tape in the Pacific Time Zone).
I watched the opening ceremony live on Canadian TV at 3:00AM. The events they show live, are, of course, those featuring Canadian athletes, so I wait for prime time “live” now.
As far as the time difference, Beijing is 12 hours ahead of EDT in the US. So most of the “prime time” coverage on NBC is live. If you’re in the US and have cable/satellite, there is coverage just about 24 hours a day on one or more of the NBC affiliate channels, such as MSNBC, CNBC, USA Network, etc. Some of that is live, and some is taped.
I’m signed up for many of the email announcements that NBCOlympics.com sends out. I’ve found that for events being shown on TV, they hold off on sending the results until after it has aired, whether or not it’s live. For events that won’t be televised, they send them right away. I haven’t tracked it in enough detail to know whether or not they take your actual timezone into account, but you enter your ZIP code when you set up the emails.
Amusingly, the results of the women’s gymnastics team competition arrived in my mailbox only a couple of minutes after the competition ended on TV (and I believe real life as well?). However, it listed the USA as having the gold and China the silver, which gave me a minute’s confusion as they were still showing the US’s dejected faces on my TV screen. They sent a correction email the next morning. ![]()
