April Fool!
(I think the last change to piece moves was the Queen powering up in the 15th century…)
Are you watching the men’s Candidates? The favorites are falling by the wayside and Sindarov looks to be headed towards a match with Gukesh.
The women’s side is something of a logjam.
I think that is significantly underselling Sindarov’s performance. He has 6 wins out of 12 matches, with the rest draws. It’s a record-breaking performance, particularly being +5 after the first 7 rounds (playing everyone once). The tournament was basically over at the halfway point.
Of course, with those rules as described, every game is instantly checkmate with white winning.
Sindarov drew his 13th-round game with Giri. He thus remains undefeated and clinches the Candidates Tournament with one round to go. (Has that ever been done?)
I’m guessing he’ll be favored in the World Championship against Gukesh.
It feels like it. Gukesh has struggled post-championship.
The women’s Candidates side is still pretty close, and at this point, since Bibisara is tied for the lead & she’s dating Sindarov, I’m all in on some kind of powerhouse chess relationship succeeding. (she had a nice win in an opposite-colored bishops, pawn majority endgame against Anna Muzychuk today, who is the person I’d more seriously like to see win)
