Omnibus Evil MFers in the news thread

When my mother and I first moved up here 20 years ago, her first attempt at pronouncing it came out something like “Pully up”, which evolved into a running joke between the two of us where we say it as if we were an old-timey elevator operator. “Ninth floor, pully up! (DING DING!)”

I love it!

I had a GPS program many years ago that pronounced it “poo-WEE-lup”. I don’t even remember the name of it (it was a phone app). The only reason I used it over the more well-known apps is because one of the voice options sounded like a distinguished upper-class Englishman, and when it spoke I felt like Bruce Wayne being given directions from Alfred.

I was sad when it stopped updating and went away from the app store.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard that name until this thread, and that’s how it stumbled out of my brain, along with a ‘meh, good enough’ since I wasn’t expecting a discussion over it. Given that I’ll probably never see it outside of this thread, I’m sticking with Pully Up.

This can’t be evil, because it’s like, Biblical.

My current GS pronounces my city as “Messa” (should be “May-sa”, it’s Spanish). It’s not the only thing it gets wrong, but it’s a big one.

And even thought I know how to pronounce the city in WA, it will always be pully up to me.

Good to see Ken Ham making the effort to keep up with Kent Hovind on the child sex abuse enabling.

This happened right in my area. What makes it worse (if possible) is that multiple local neighborhood Facebook groups have been censoring and deleting every post and comment about this story. Evidently one of the kids is the son of a firefighter who lives in the neighborhood, and he is friends with the group admins, so they would rather protect the social reputation of this family, then protect the entire neighborhood from a potential serial killer in training. To make things wose, this kid also was caught torturing and killing a baby racoon last year, which was evidently successfully covered up until now. As a pet owner, I find this particularly horrifying. I definitely loved on my cats a bit more last night after this story came out.

Maybe the roadrunner put out a hit on the coyote?

But seriously, yes, this is a sign of an unhealthy mind. I don’t believe that all kids who do this thing turn into serial killers, though I believe people who are serial killers tend to have done this kind of thing as youngsters. (It’s sort of an “all apples are fruit but not all fruit are apples” relationship.) And juveniles who have brains developing while young tend to do some insane shit because their brains are literally not fully-formed yet. I sure did some stupid shit as a kid (not torturing animals dumb, but still dumb). So these kids aren’t guaranteed to be monsters as they grow up.

But I think they do need counseling. This isn’t normal. I’m no psychologist but this kind of thing if unaddressed could lead one or more of those kids down a dark path if urges like this are allowed to fester, and they lack empathy for other living creatures (indifference to animal suffering is bad enough but it can lead to indifference toward human suffering as well). These kids need help and hiding the behavior does everyone a disservice; themselves and the community around them.

I’m glad police are investigating, hopefully that doesn’t also get shoved under the rug.

The DNR is working with the Chicago Sherriff’s Department on this, so I think it’s beyond being covered up at this point. Coyotes are a protected species, so this is a serious offense. I definitely agree that counseling is imperative for these kids, and possibly their parents. I know kids do dumb things, but to me that’s more the TPing someone’s house, graffiti, turning donuts in a parking lot kind of stuff, not stomping a baby animal to death for a laugh. That’s a serious lack of empathy that is very concerning.

Are you sure about that?

In Illinois, coyotes are protected as a furbearer. Coyotes in urban areas that become problems may be removed if a nuisance wildlife permit is issued by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. CACC annually renews this permit

Yes I’m sure.

Yeah, I was about to post the same link. Or another link with the same info.

In Illinois, coyotes are managed as a furbearer which requires a hunting or trapping license to harvest a coyote. Another option for problem coyotes in urban areas is a nuisance wildlife PERMIT, issued by an Illinois Department of Natural Resources district wildlife biologist. The third option is to hire a licensed nuisance wildlife control operator who has the appropriate permit and experience to deal with nuisance wildlife.

In rural areas, a hunting or trapping license is needed to harvest a coyote. In rural areas, there is no limit to the number of coyotes an individual with a hunting or trapping license may take. Coyotes may be hunted year-round except during firearm deer season, when only licensed deer hunters may take coyotes. Coyotes may be trapped from mid-November through mid-February. Illinois Department of Natural Resources biologists monitor the number of coyotes in Illinois to ensure that hunting and trapping do not negatively impact the population. For full hunting and trapping season dates and regulations see the Illinois Digest of Hunting and Trapping Regulations.

They aren’t protected like an endangered species would be, but you can’t treat them as vermin like rats, at least that’s what I’m understanding.

Yes, they have legal protection, which is what I said. Now can we get back to talking about the evil? This was also a pup too. Locals in the area said they were familiar with him and his small family and that they never bothered anyone.

You “saying it” is not sufficient on the SDMB, generally if someone is challenged it’s nice to provide facts, which we did. In support of you, I might add.

As to “talking about the evil”, I think pointing out that there are laws around this misbehavior has at least a bit of relevance, don’t you think? I mean, I would think you did, because you brought it up in the first place.

I was just surprised that that was the thing that began to be the topic of discussion, and not, you know, the actual topic.

My mistake for expecting a thread about evil MFers in the news to talk about the evil MFers. This isn’t Great Debates, it’s the Pit. We’re supposed to be roasting the evil MFers, not quibbling and getting pedantic about details.

I mean, the consequences of what the evil MFers did is absolutely relevant, right?

It is the actual topic. Pit threads can veer into all kinds of directions. This is actually very much on-topic compared to most Pit discussions. Your griping is the only hijack that’s happening right now.

Welcome to the SDMB! I hope you enjoy your time here!

(Seriously, quibbling and getting pedantic is part of board culture. It’s silly to expect otherwise.)

Lol, I’ve been on this board since like 2001. I understand board culture, and I also understand that the pit is not like the other forums on this board. Seriously, I am just really pissed and upset about this happening right by my house, and I know that kids that do this kind of thing sometimes move on from wild animals to household pets, and as a cat owner, it makes me feel … let’s say very strong feelings about this. Especially when there are active attempts to cover this up to protect the social status of these families, as if that is more important than the safety of everyone in this neighborhood. So my emotions are kind of leading the way here, hence the post in the pit.

I get it. And honestly, I don’t have any animosity to you about it. What’s happening with those animals is really fucked up, and while for someone like me it’s something happening far away in a different part of the country, it’s something happening in your neighborhood.

I do hope that something is done. It sounds like at least one kid is moving from animal to animal here, a raccoon previously, a coyote this time. I wonder if this kid talked the other kids into joining in here, maybe dared them to. It sounds like this kid’s dad is a “really big deal” locally, so maybe has some social pull here. And who knows what else the kid has done that nobody knows about. Being concerned about pets is rational, and as the kid grows up, if it doesn’t get addressed because a locally-important daddy keeps him sheltered, it could turn into something even worse (although harming animals is bad enough on its own).

I find it encouraging if the authorities are getting involved, and maybe something can be done before even worse happens.
