Omnibus Evil MFers in the news thread

Very much so. Seems like only something could dream up for a story but it is real life.

It does not help that the structure of the narrative is so scattershot, jumping all over the place like an epileptic grasshopper on ritalin.

Good.

Also, I tried to forward that link to someone and it was paywalled. Does anyone have a free link?

Next up: vegan anarchist sovereign citizens.

Seattle Times is a solid paywall but I thought the Spokesman allowed a couple free views, including the Time articles they carry. I’m a Spokesman subscriber but don’t see a way to do a gift link like NYTimes. Sorry.

Arguably there’s competition between evil and stupid here.

This facility promotes hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat dozens of conditions, including pain, Alzheimer’s, spider bite, cancer, macular degeneration, crush injury, interstitial cystitis, steatohepatitis, hyperlipidemia, you name it.

HBOT has a few legitimate uses, including for treating the bends, carbon monoxide poisoning, diabetic foot ulcers and some burn cases. The reason for this child undergoing HBOT hasn’t been revealed and may not be known until a lawsuit is filed (parents have hired the Fieger law firm). Note however that HBOT has been touted without valid evidence as a treatment for autism and alleged vaccine injury.*

More on the Michigan tragedy.

*it shouldn’t surprise anyone that this Iowa clinic is operated by a pair of chiropractors, one of whom promotes her experience with infants, toddlers and pregnant women. They also sell HBOT chambers for home use (one goes for $7495, plus a $500 delivery charge). What could go wrong?

An information technology expert who for decades assumed the identity of another man so convincingly that his victim was forcibly medicated and jailed

At least the investigator actually put in some legwork:

a detective tracked down the biological father listed on Woods’ birth certificate and tested his DNA to confirm that Woods was his son

I keep getting this thread confused with a “Tell me about a wild ass movie you just watched” thread.

As a species, we are one fucked up group.

It says that Kierans was working at an Iowa hospital using the name Woods, earning $100K a year. He did not really take anything from Woods, other than his name, but somehow he managed to live a more comfortable life under that name.

Is that what you took from the article?

Over the years, Keirans married and had a child, all as Woods. He worked at the University of Iowa Hospital and used Woods’ ID to secure credit union loans in Iowa totaling more than $200,000, prosecutors said.

He used someone else’s identify to secure loans, more than $200,000. He might never have been able to do that using his real identify since he had stolen a car and somehow got out of custody and fled after his arrest.

I think he took more than his name, he took his whole life. That identity let him shed his criminal past and forced his victim to become a criminal just in the course of trying to prove his innocence.

Except, he very well might never have found out about the identity theft, were it not for the youtuber, and he could have handled the situation more carefully without having to be taken into custody. He was not “forced” to become a criminal, and the authorities might have put more effort into examining the information. A lot of people dropped the ball in this case, mostly because the victim seemed a bit like a bum and the thief seemed to be living a decent life, so society will naturally favor the more fortunate.

That absolutely seems to be the case; that authorities were prejudiced against him because of his appearance.

Who knew that kind of thing could happen?

(It occurs to me this would probably have been better-placed in the “miscarriage of justice” Pit thread.)

He has a name that reminds me of a group of hooded bigots.

I can think of a man who needs to be smacked around.

There’s been a ton of back-and-forth lately between Letby defenders and supporters of the prosecution’s case. How accurate the “expert panel”'s findings are will be subject to more debate.

Vegan anarchist death metal bands? I bring you Cattle Decapitation.

(Small print: vegetarian, not strictly vegan. Some of the band are vegan)

…who are absolutely fucking incredible…

Belle Gibson claimed she had cancer, and raked in the donation dough while promoting her own “alternative health” methods. Thankfully she’s been charged, but not before inspiring copycats as well as her admittedly fascinating-sounding Netflix series.
