Elon Musk is an authoritarian idiot, but he got one thing right: to see who something is important to, disable it and see who complains.

Palm Beach GOP endorses a candidate for county clerk who is currently being prosecuted for molesting a boy and girl both under the age of 5.

I live in PBC. This is quite the local foo-foo-rah.

The problem is the Rs have so often leveled similar accusations at various Ds that the general public is having a hard time telling the difference between “Some ad says Person X is a molester” and “Responsible news media reports Person X is being prosecuted for child molesting”.

Flood the zone and accuse, accuse, accuse. Works most times.

What about criminal liabiloty?

California couple arrested on child abuse charges in horrifying surrogacy probe

An extremely wealthy Chinese immigrant and his wife amassed a brood of 21 children through a surrogacy scheme and raised them in a “house of horrors,” prosecutors alleged Tuesday. Guojun Xuan, 66, and Silvia Zhang, 39, were arrested at their sprawling mansion in Arcadia, a city about 13 miles (20 kilometers) northeast of downtown Los Angeles.

The children suffered daily beatings from cruel nannies as the couple watched over a network of surveillance cameras and laughed, according to prosecutors. The couple allegedly recruited women across the country to serve as surrogates, promising them that they were just looking for another child to grow their family.

The couple face several counts of child abuse as well as conspiracy to commit child abuse, accessory after the fact and dissuading a witness, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman.

That’s some crazy over-the-top Roald Dahl shit that I’d never believe could be real except it’s coming from AP.

Doctor is allegedly murdered by her husband while hosting a sleepover party for children:

During a kids’ sleepover party?!

That’s a great news site.

They’re also running a story (which I declined to read) headlined:

Vicky Pattison ‘repulsed’ after discovering a pus-filled boil in her crotch

Maybe some higher-quality coverage:

Perhaps some further details as well.

These stories have details from the prosecutor on cause of death:

Hanlon said a post-mortem examination noted a “blunt force injury” to the right side of Hannah Cain’s head, as well as an injury “that could be suggestive of compression of the neck”.

CBS News Sunday Morning ran a story about a month ago about abuses in the surrogacy process. It mentioned multiple cases like this one, of people with twenty or more surrogate children. Xu Bo, a billionaire video game exec, is said to have over a hundred children through surrogates. It’s not clear to me why many of these people are Chinese.

Sorry, I thought I linked to the video of the CBS News story. It’s here.

Rampant speculation - China’s “one child” policy created a breeding fetish, with a need for lots of children. In other words, an effect of the draconian policy the Chinese government enacted to curb the exploding population growth.

I know it’s been modified since the original roll out and now has been eliminated. But the policy was in place long enough to affect the culture. Especially boys in the generation where female fetuses were aborted.

I think, in addition, the billionaire belief that they have ‘superior genes’ and need to pass them on - c.f. Elon Musk’s brood.

Thieves pull off Italy’s biggest-ever wine heist, stealing 30,000 bottles worth 5 million euros

Thieves stole about 30,000 bottles of some of Italy’s most prized wines worth an estimated 5 million euros ($5.8 million) from a winery in Tuscany, in what the producer described Friday as the country’s largest wine theft on record.

The theft targeted Marchesi Antinori’s facility near Cortona, in the province of Arezzo, where a group of at least seven thieves on Saturday night made off with bottles of some of Italy’s most sought-after wines, including Solaia, Tignanello and Guado al Tasso. The theft was discovered Monday, but the company made it public on Friday to avoid interfering with the investigation.

Chief Executive Renzo Cotarella said the thieves disabled the winery’s alarm system and surveillance cameras before entering with two large trucks. Using the company’s forklifts, they loaded the vehicles with wine and fled during the night.

But I wonder how the thieves can turn this into cash. Perhaps an unscrupulous foreign intermediary. But if so I am thinking only 10% or so of retail value. Any thoughts?

Sell them to rich people that will consider them worth even more since they’re stolen? I’m thinking they’ll be sold similar to how stolen art is sold.

I wouldn’t call them evil. Very naughty, maybe.

They’ll end up in less-scrupulous liquor stores and supermarket chains.

Two Euro Carlo?

That’s fairly high end wine. There are some real pirates in the fancy wine industry. I bet it’ll “disappear” easily into that milieu.
