Are you suggesting Phineas Gage was the first MAGA Republican?
That reminds me of a calvin in hobbs cartoon where calvin is hammering nails into a coffee table His mom comes out yelling. “What are you doing!!!?” Calvin askes “Is that a trick question?”
It is worse than that, though. “Liberty” (aka “FREEDOM!”) is a nebulous incongruity that ignores the fact that no one can be free if everyone else is, because anything we do affects someone else in some way, subtracting your freedom from their freedom.
And, “justice”, well, it is all well and good but it is just as subjective as “liberty”. In the end, they are both synonyms for bullshit.
Another update gives us another (sorta) evil person.
I’m guessing any dopers in the Waukegan area are aware of this:
I have no idea how the alderman got a hold of the picture, and can’t imagine why he thought it was a good idea to post it to the internet. I’m curious what the context of the post was.
And the context is him being a moron. It was literally a public facebook post (just text, picture already deleted, SFW) saying little more than ‘look at this arm that was found, why hasn’t the administration said anything about it yet?’ IOW, he’s one of those people that don’t seem to understand that, in order for the investigation to maintain it’s integrity, the public simply can’t know every single detail in real time.
The mayor released a statement that didn’t mess around with the typical meaningless statements that you’d expect ie ‘we look forward to discussing the matter with him directly’. Nope, she was very clear about her feelings on the matter:
“This week, Waukegan Police received a call that a severed arm had been found along the shores of Lake Michigan in Waukegan. The Waukegan Police Department proactively communicated with Milwaukee County law enforcement since the moment of this discovery, as they were aware of the Sade Robinson homicide in Wisconsin. The remains are currently in possession of the Lake County Coroner’s Office, which is conducting DNA testing to confirm the identity of the victim. The City of Waukegan does not comment on active criminal investigations, especially in cases where the City is not the lead agency. This policy is intended to preserve the investigation’s integrity and respect the privacy of victims and their families. That is why no public statements were made until Alderman Keith Turner posted a graphic photo of the remains on his Facebook account.”
“Alderman Keith Turner at no time contacted the Waukegan Police command staff or anyone within Waukegan City government to ask about this incident before posting the photo of the remains on Facebook. The City did not provide Ald. Turner with the photograph, and he was never given permission to post the photo on his Facebook page. Individual Aldermen are not authorized to speak on behalf of the City, much less for the Police Department. On behalf of the City of Waukegan, I find the posting of an image of this type to be morally disgusting, socially irresponsible, and extremely cruel to the victim’s family. I hope all Waukeganites join me in prayer for the victim of this horrific crime and for the victim’s family.” - Waukegan Mayor Ann Taylor
Apparently he’s also running for mayor, making this a particularly stupid idea. If he’s got some beef with the ‘administration’ and this somehow played into it (ie ‘see, I’ve been telling you they hide stuff from us’), the post alone would have sufficed, no need for a picture.
WARNING! The linked article describes extreme animal cruelty.
A Florida man was charged with animal cruelty after his dog was found decapitated in a park.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said it arrested Domingo Rodriguez after the body of a dog was found floating in a mangrove in Fort DeSoto Park.
The dog, a 4-year-old bulldog mix named Dexter, was found wrapped in plastic on May 14 and had a microchip, the sheriff’s office said.
This is very much the definiton of evil.
Note to self: If you decapitate a dog, get rid of the microchip while you’re in there.
Heh, not as easy as you make it sound. A few decades back, when ostrich farmers were trying their hands at growing ostrich, each time an insured bird died the farmer had to retrieve the microchip for their insurance claim.
The chip isn’t just sitting there waiting to be found. The body walls it off. When I was present for chip retrieval from a dead ostrich, a big chunk of ostrich would be cut and moved. The chunk would be scanned, and if the chip was in there the chunk would be cut in half. The halves would each be scanned and the piece with the chip would be cut in half again. Rinse & repeat.
Dang. I just realized I left out the link. Same warning: this link goes to a description of extreme animal cruelty.
Not only that, they sometimes migrate. It might start out between the shoulders and wind up in a hind leg.
And here I thought ostrich chips were non-migratory. ;-D
But seriously, the technology has improved dramatically over time and migration no longer occurs.
Shouldn’t’ve named the bird Zenos.
My favorite paradox.
It’s quite sad that Dr. Martens has never named a model of their boots the Zenos.
[thinks it through] Heh. Good one.
European or African?
You think the birds get the good chips?
I find that chips tend to migrate to my waist (both American and UK types).
Some catalytic coverter thieves just shot this actor in southwest LA. It’s too bad he ran into some nefarious people like that.
One time when I was a ditzy 12 year old I saw an arsonist lighting a piece of rubber in a stranger’s tailpipe. I shouted him “Stop that right now” and he screamed at me “Kiss my ass, mother fucker!”
I was sure lucky enough to run away instead of getting shot like this guy.
Big companies earn money while the people who do the work get peanuts. As usual.
The circumstances were different. According to this story, he was heading with a co-worker back to his own vehicle after a bartending job and saw it was up on jacks with people under it. He wasn’t familiar with the neighborhood and thought he was being towed because he might have parked illegally by mistake, and approached to clarify. He was shot before he even realized they were criminals.
He stepped in front of his co-worker and asked someone on the ground next to his vehicle whether he was being towed, at which point the person shot him, she said.
Very different from running across a random crime in progress and trying to intervene.
I assume we know details because of the other person with him who survived the encounter.
