This supports the idea of it originating from Jazz musicians.
But Roscoe’s? Are you sure? Roscoe’s isn’t that old, relatively speaking; it was founded in 1975.
Meanwhile, Wells Supper Club in Harlem was serving it as far back as 1938.

Agreed, however it must be acknowledged that chicken and waffles isn’t a unconventional flavor combination that a few folks just happen to find intriguing. According to Wikipedia, it was a food grouping known and celebrated among various people going back 150 years, including the Pennsylvania Dutch, the African American community in Harlem, and others.
It’s not as ubiquitous as a burger and fries, but it’s been around longer.
Hell, even IHOP has a decent chicken & waffles dish. Nothing earthshaking, but the blueberry syrup rolling onto the chicken is just perfect for my palate.
Those things were downright NASTY.
I like sweet and sour pork. So I do understand the combinations of what seems to be conflicting flavors.
I love me some hot wings. But say no to the sweet honey type sauce.
While I personally think that chicken and waffles is a crime. This hi-jack should not belong in this thread. I’m done.
I mean … it’s the BBQ pit
Well-played, sir.
In New Zealand, I once tried the “Lamb and minted peas” flavour of potato chip.
Not.
Good.
“…Lamb and minted peas” flavour of potato chip.
Sounding as imaginable to me as, say, “Chateaubriand and strained saffron” chips.

Give them a break, the Kiwis clearly want peas on earth
Wow, it did NOT take long for that line of posts to end up in Le Sueur.
<grin>

Maybe I have the restaurant wrong? But it was somewhere on Central Avenue. This is from something I heard ages ago, so the details have faded from my brain.

Yeah, I love chicken and waffles, but those chips were definitely nasty.
I like crab- (Maryland) and Punjab- (UK) flavored chips.

Roscoe’s really pushed chicken and waffles into the public consciousness with its clientele of move, television, and music heavy hitters. It existed long before they were established, but by the 90’s it was in the “in-crowd” culture due to Roscoe’s customers.
I like crab- (Maryland) and Punjab- (UK) flavored chips.
Ooh. Old Bay chips sound fantastic.
Maybe a chicken wing flavor? Buffalo chips?
Has anyone ever tried pheasant-flavored crisps [chips]? I’ve seen them in a British goods store, along with other game flavors, and I’m slightly curious. My favorite flavor now is pickled onion.
Old Bay chips sound fantastic.
Is there any crab flavor involved, or just Old Bay?
They are crab seasoning flavored.
I was disappointed too.

Bertie County peanuts an “Batchelor Bay” flavor that is fantastic.
They are crab seasoning flavored.
Then again, if I’m eating, say, a soup, and I taste Old Bay, my first thought is “there’s crab in this soup”.
